A mother from the east bay says her teenaged son was trying to buy christmas presents at Whole Foods Market when employees think he was doing something else. The mother believes her boy was targeted because of the color of his skin. Shes now demanding an apology. Abc 7 News Reporter Elissa Harrington has the story. My children were born and raised in this community. They should be able to shop safely at the local health food store. Reporter but Marlena Henderson says employees at the whole foods in oakland racially targeted her son, kicked him out of the store, and defended their actions by saying he was aggressive and other terms that stereotype young black boys. This happened back on december 21st. The 13yearold stopped into the whole foods near lake merritt to buy his mother christmas gifts. She says he made the honest mistake of taking his basket into the restroom. Two men in polo shirts came after him, yelled at him, accused him of stealing. I was horrified because he was just he was trying to be independent, he was trying to be responsible. He was shopping for gifts. He was trying to be generous. Reporter marlena posted this detailed account of the incident on social media which has now been shared hundreds of times. Some people are threatening to boycott whole foods. She hopes this leads to change. They need to apologize to my son. They also need some sort of training with their management. Reporter whole foods released a statement saying the company has zero tolerance for discrimination. It also says, we conducted a full investigation of the situation, including the review of surveillance video, interviews with Loss Prevention and accounts from other individuals who witnessed the event. While we cannot share specifics as the customer is a minor, what has been described on social media does not coincide with our findings. In oakland, Elissa Harrington, abc 7 news. A massive fire destroyed part of an Elementary School in modesto yesterday. The modesto bee reports flames burned through three classrooms and a computer lab at bret harte elementary. Other rooms were damaged by the heat. No word yet how it started. There is outrage in the Lgbt Community this morning after the Trump Administration decided to cut every member of an important advisory committee. One activist calls the decision a war on people with hiv or aids. Abc 7 News Reporter Carlos Salcedo has more. Reporter Cecilia Chung is an transgender hiv activist who has been living with hiv for almost 25 years. I would like President Trump to remember what hiv has done to the Lgbt Community and the entire country. Reporter president obama appointed chung to the Advisory Council on hiv aids. Once her term expired in august, she had the option to stay in a Trump Presidency but left after three members resigned this past summer. We requested meetings to discuss what the directions that the administration wants to take. But most of these requests fell on deaf ears. Reporter the administration this week terminated the remaining members, which doesnt come as a surprise, as new administrations typically appoint new people. Now attention turns to who will be appointed to the board. Quite honestly i would personally be surprised if he does replace these people with his own people. Reporter he says he was discouraged with the World Aids Day proclamation. He erased the Lgbt Community entirely. He didnt even mention it. Reporter the council has advised the white house on hiv aids policy since 1995. There have been Great Strides in aids Research Since the epidemic broke in the 1980s. Now only time will tell who the president s pick will be to continue the fight against hiv aids. In San Francisco, Carlos Salcedo, abc 7 news. Happening today, a final farewell to fallen chp officer Andrew Camilleri and the public is invited to attend. Camilleri died on Christmas Eve while he and his partner were on patrol in hayward. A car hit the back of their suv as they were on the side of the road on interstate 880 near highway 92. The funeral procession starts at 6 00 this morning. The Memorial Service will take place at the Christian Life center in stockton at 8 30 this morning. We will live stream the event through our abc 7 news app as well our website and facebook page. Investigators say the suspect driving the car that killed camilleri was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Abc 7 news was in burlingame last night on a ridealong with the Police Departments dui enforcement team. Theyll be patrolling the peninsula, ready to stop and arrest alcohol and drug impaired drivers. We refer to it as dui saturation patrol, putting officers to look for impaired drivers on the roadways and if they were to be impaired, to remove them from the roadways. The chp is enacting an maximum enforcement period to help keep motorists safe. The operation will last through monday night at 11 59. People will be find if caught using illegal fireworks. The city has set up a hotline and website to report incidents. Officials are worried that the dry winter and use of fireworks could possibly cause spot fires that grow out of control. A Los Angeles Police Department Officer is in stable condition this morning after she was shot during an ambush. The shooting happened last night just before 10 00 after Police Conducted a pedestrian stop. Multiple shots were fired in the officers direction. Investigators have determined it was an ambush. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh. Police have one suspect in custody and have recovered a firearm. A shooting at a law office in long beach led to the death of a man as well as the suspect. Police swarmed the Office Building just after 2 00 yesterday afternoon. Another man was wounded in the rampage and drove himself to the hospital. Authorities say the suspect appears to have taken his own life. He and the victim seem to have been employees at the law firm. In kansas, an alleged prank swatting stunt ended tragically with Police Shooting and killing an innocent man. According to police, two people playing the game call of duty made a prank call to police. The 911 caller gave the address of a home of a father of two who had no involvement. Officers swarmed the mans address. Police fatally shot him when they thought he was reaching for a gun. Due to the actions of a prankster, we have an innocent victim. Swatting is when someone reports a hoax emergency that prompts a large police response, often the s. W. A. T. Team. As people rush to pay their property taxes by the end of the year, new alarms are being sounded in the bay area about the potentially damaging effects on the bay area housing market. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony has the story. Those factors will hit heavily. Reporter realtor mark ross says new federal limits on mortgage interest deductions and tax writeoffs could deal a big blow to the bay area housing market. This will make people think twice about selling. They might remodel instead of selling. That might have an overreaching effect on the supply. When the supply is constrained, the prices continue to go up. Reporter the new law only allows interest to be deducted on new mortgages up to 750,000, down from 1 million. And federal deductions for state and local taxes including property taxes will be limited to 10,000. Were all very badly damaged by this new tax law. Reporter realtor chuck lamm says there may be some relief for seniors in the new year in the form of a possible ballot measure. To let people who are seniors or handicapped keep their tax base and move up or down as many times as they find prudent in their lives. Were not quite sure what the effect is going to be yet. Reporter some say the overall strength of the bay area market will offset any negative impacts from the new federal tax law. Well wait and see what the effect on the market will be. San jose tofu has been making handmade tofu since 1946. Customers prize it for its taste and texture. The shop has been owned and operated by three generations of the nozaki family. But the owners say its time for them to retire. The physical effort of lifting 100pound trays and starting work at 2 00 a. M. Has taken its toll. Inside i feel like im falling apart. I feel like im about 97 years old. So tired every day, stuck in the cold water all day long. Theyre very iconic. Theyre so much part of japan town, our history, the culture, everything. So far two miles in concord. And the south bay doing much better. We have haze and cold temperatures with numbers in the mid30s in the east bay, 34 in san ramon, 30 in santa rosa. Freezing in novato at 32. On the coast its 39 degrees. 41 in mountain view. Certainly a frosty morning in spots. Our highlights call for hazy sunshine and a mild holiday weekend. And it will be dry, not only for today but for new years eve. New years day. A rainy pattern will set up in the middle of next week. So far, 26 dry days in december, going on 27 for tomorrow. And as we look at the calendar, we had just a splash about a week ago, and then you barely probably can remember the earlier part of the month. November saved us and brought us all our rain so far. We just had a couple of hundredths in december. Our storm impact scale, the next several days will feature 1s. That will be wednesday, thursday, and friday. Breezy at times, rainfall estimates a half inch to an inch. Wednesday afternoon, 2 00, some scattered showers. By wednesday night it looks like the commute, the rain gets going. It wraps around and stays with us until thursday. But then a break for midday thursday. And the last impulse on friday morning gives that heaviest push in the mountains. It looks to be rather warm, a little bit of snow for the highest elevations, more like some rain at lake level. But back home, amounts ranging from about a half inch, hopefully in oakland. Remember, this is almost five days away. These amounts will change as we get closer to the event. Perhaps 3 4 inch in San Francisco. The first system coming in from the south, thats why looking at the totals, heftier on the coast. Usually we get the higher amounts in the north bay, but well see. This system allowing for perhaps a half inch around hayward. Highs today underneath that hazy sunshine, high to midlevel clouds. Another spare the air alert. 60 today in oakland. Weve been locked into this pattern with very little change day to day. After the weekend, well shake things up. 64 in fremont and san jose. But this morning youre shivering around the bay with low 30s for you in santa rosa. Freezing in novato. 34 in san ramon. With that, some fog. Onemile visibility in napa. Two miles over in concord and livermore. Better in the south bay. We expect the fog to stay in the north bay. 30s through the 7 00 and 8 00 hour. Inland and east bay. The coast will be in the 40s and 50s by noontime. With the high and midlevel clouds, well still have a mild afternoon with highs in the low to mid60s for most. In michigan, low visibility is blamed for this 40car pileup on u. S. 31 at muskegan. Tow trucks pulling cars off the median, closing the highway. The white house conditions out here started a chain reaction. It was chaotic, as you can imagine. Reporter in rockton, illinois, a convertible sliced through this semi. Police say snow was a factor. Millions of americans are suffering bonechilling cold. In texas, work crews are out prepping the roads. Those frigid temperatures now dipping as far south as charleston, south carolina. And it will be the coldest new years eve for much of the lower 48 in decades. Windchills make it feel like minus 8 in boston, minus 25 in minneapolis. Frostbite can set in in just 30 minutes. Its also cold in china, were artists have created a village of intricate frozen works of art. The 2018 International Ice and snow sculpture festival features national landmarks, frozen palaces, and ice slides lit up with l. E. D. Lights. 10,000 artists were involved in constructing the exhibit. Although organizers admit large machinery has replaced much of the labor. If you want to see the sculptures, you still have time to make the trip. It runs through the end of february in the northeast chinese province. Now to that devastating fire in the bronx. Officials say it was a 3yearold boy playing with burners on a stove who started thursday nights fire. At least 12 people were killed. Abc News Reporter Erielle Reshef has more. Reporter a first look inside the charred hallway of this new york apartment, the path of destruction after flames raced up these stairs, claiming 12 lives including four children. Fire travels up. The stairway acted like a chimney. It took the fire so quickly upstairs that people had very little time to react. Reporter the walls blackened by smoke. Water still dripping from floors above. Fire officials revealing the deadly blaze ignited in the kitchen of a first floor unit. It started from a young boy, 3 1 2 years old, playing with the burners on the stove. Reporter that boys mother coming out of the shower to find smoke. Officials say the fire spread so quickly in part because she left the door open when she fled the apartment with her son and 2yearold. The call coming in just before 7 00. Fire in a multiple dwelling on multiple floors. Reporter more than 160 firefighters race to go the racing to the scene, arriving within three minutes, performing cpr on the injured as they were whisked away. Weve got a child trapped, unknown floor. Reporter as many as 20 people crammed onto the fire escapes in the frigid conditions trying to outrun the fast moving flames. Those who managed to get out, facing single digit temperatures, many with no shoes or coats. Red cross and neighbors rush to rushing to keep the victims warm. What do i do . Where do i go from here . Reporter families sharing horse breaking stories of loss. Oh, jesus. Four from one family. Come on, now. Reporter those four victims including shawntay young, her aunt and two cousins on the fifth floor. This man says his son who was in the army died trying to help his next door neighbors get out. I couldnt find him. Then i knew something was wrong. Reporter maria batiste trapped in a bathroom with her 8monthold granddaughter, calling her family in the final moments. The smoke overcame her. He invited some 60 members of the coast guard and a round of golf to thank them for their work in the hurricanes in texas and florida. Reporter as his first year in office quickly winds down, President Trump appears to be in a jovial mood. It was the 17th hole. I think all of you were watching my shot, right . Did you see it . The president assured the reporter 16 times in a 30minute interview that there was no collusion between his campaign and the russians. Reporter instead, the president said repeatedly that he thinks special counsel bob muellers investigation will be fair. Trump did however say he thinks the investigation makes the country look very bad, and it puts the country in a very bad position. For months now its been a white house talking point that mueller should wrap up his investigation by the end of the year or shortly thereafter. I dont know how much longer it could possibly go on. In fact for the entire holiday weekend, weve had that it seems like day after day, week after week. It will be dry for new years eve celebrations.
