Kids rushed out on stretchers and into ambulances. Inside First Responders treating some of the 23 people injured when a platform collapsed. It was really scary and everybody was crying and bleeding. When you get off a bart train, the biggest thing standing between and you the outside world is the escalator. Riders often complain that the escalators are broken. Abc 7 News ReporterJonathan Bloom explains how bart is taking steps to fix them. Reporter if theres one thing bart riders have plenty to say about, its their escalators. They need a lot of maintenance. Reporter how much do you think theyre broken . In the last year, its pretty much all the time. It can be inconvenient at times. Its really difficult for people to walk up those steps. Reporter bart knows the escalators are a problem. Theyve been around for so long, theyre reaching that last stage of their life. Reporter barts attempt at fixing them is this. Walls that look like swiss cheese have sprouted up overnight. Look through the holes and you can see construction about to begin. This shows what will be here in five months. A steel and glass canopy shielding it and the riders from the elements. We had a canopy in our downtown station at oakland and 19th street, and there weve seen a decrease in onethird in down time for our escalators. They fix the escalators without closing more than one station at a time. The whole project will take several years to complete. Im just so happy bart is getting their act together. Reporter it means neighbors will become familiar with these wal walls. Were coming into thanksgiving, christmas and new years. Reporter bart plans to keep noise at dusk to a minimum by only working at night when businesses are closed. They will have security, digital signs with train information and gates that close at night. And bart will do what they can to protect those escalators. In San Francisco, Jonathan Bloom, abc 7 news.
