7:50 a.m. Wednesday: Tuesday's storm likely makes this month the tenth-snowiest December in Des Moines history, according to preliminary data and historical records from the National Weather Service.
The 9.6 inches of snow that fell in Des Moines on Tuesday stretched the preliminary running total for this month to 17.1 inches. That narrowly bests the 17 inches that fell in the capital city in December 1888, which previously ranked tenth.
