Inside Michigan man’s prison sentence: No visitors for nearly 20 years, losing a son and COVID-19 battle

FLINT, MI — Over the course of more than two decades, Michael Thompson survived life in prison.
However, in the days that became weeks, months, and years spent behind prison walls, he grappled with the obstacles that came with having no freedom.
It’s now been a week since Thompson was released from prison.
The sun shined through the windows and glass doors Thursday, Feb. 4 at his temporary home in Genesee County -- a stark contrast to the pitch black skies that greeted the 69-year-old a week earlier as he walked out of the Charles Egeler Reception And Guidance Center in Jackson and into a new world.
