Join us for the first session of our "Gender and NutritiON: EmPower the Change" webinar series Background: Gender inequality is both a cause and effect of malnutrition, hunger and poverty. Traditional gender roles often influence access to resources, decision-making power and control over resources including food production, distribution and consumption. Gender responsive and transformative nutrition is an approach that not only addresses the unique nutritional needs and challenges faced by individuals of all genders, including women, girls and other marginalized groups. It also aims to transform the underlying systems that shape and govern policies, program implementation, service delivery as well as social norms and beliefs that influence agency, decision making power and ownership over resources. Reviews completed by MQSUN+ and TASC in 2020/2021 indicate that only 50% of National Nutrition Plans include discussion on the gender dimension of nutrition within their situational analysis. Although the majority of plans include actions that incorporate gender dimensions of nutrition, actions vary significantly and only a quarter of plans describe how gender will be mainstreamed across the plan. An in-depth review of 11 National Nutrition Plans conducted by the SUN Movement Secretariat in 2023 further identified areas of growth, capacity building for SUN countries - the need for a systems approach to addressing gender and malnutrition by integrating gender responsive or transformative nutrition actions in planning, budgeting, implementation and evaluation of relevant nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive interventions across the life-cycle. We cannot scale up nutrition if we do not address the drivers of gender inequality. Approximately 24 National Nutrition Plans will be ending their implementation cycle in 2024/2025. Leading up to the SUN Global Gathering and the Nutrition For Growth Summit, this webinar series aims to facilitate in-depth discussions and learning between SUN Countries and Networks on gender mainstreaming in nutrition policy and action to help strengthen national nutrition commitments, implementation and accountability.
