The damage caused by the MV X-Press Pearl disaster could have been averted if the Captain of the ship had informed Sri Lankan authorities of the real situation on board the vessel before it reached Colombo Port, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday.
He made the observation at an event at Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama
“The Colombo Port is one of the best ports in the region. I am sure we could have dealt with the incident better if we had been informed of the real situation on board,” he said.
Minister Amaraweera said action would be taken to ensure that a similar incident would not take place again in the future.
