HCC program preparing work-ready welders, even before they graduate high school
A Marion County High School student has big plans. Along with his high school classes, he's learning welding in downtown Hillsboro at the Hutchinson Community College welding center.
Austin Ebaben, 18, along with students from Goessel, Harrington and Hillsboro high schools take half-day classes to obtain several welding certifications. In addition, Ebaben and fellow Marion student, Rope Uhl, will compete against 150 students at the Missouri Welding Institute’s 11th annual welding competition on Jan. 28 in Nevada, Missouri. Scholarships and prizes will be awarded at the end of each competition.
Ebaben wants to gain certifications in pipe fitting as well. Next year, he plans to attend Hutchinson Community College and obtain an associate degree in welding. After completing his degree, he hopes to attend the Missouri Welding Institute and garner more certificates in welding.
