HAWTHORNE — An LGBTQ Pride flag was hoisted to the top of a pole on municipal land for the first time on Saturday, a milestone long coveted by local advocates.
It took a few moments for Mayor Richard Goldberg to raise the banner, but supporters said the effort was symbolic of the adversity that gay men, lesbians and transgender people have faced for decades.
The event, held on the lawn of the William B. Mawhinney Volunteer Ambulance Corps headquarters on Goffle Road, also was the latest achievement for a volunteer group that formed last June to promote LGBTQ rights in the borough.
