View Comments HAWTHORNE  An LGBTQ Pride flag was hoisted to the top of a pole on municipal land for the first time on Saturday, a milestone long coveted by local advocates. It took a few moments for Mayor Richard Goldberg to raise the banner, but supporters said the effort was symbolic of the adversity that gay men, lesbians and transgender people have faced for decades. The event, held on the lawn of the William B. Mawhinney Volunteer Ambulance Corps headquarters on Goffle Road, also was the latest achievement for a volunteer group that formed last June to promote LGBTQ rights in the borough.

The candidates (listed in alphabetical order by last name) are: The Rev. Jennifer Andrews-Weckerly, currently rector of Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, Toano Virginia, in the diocese of Southern Virginia. The Rev. Betsey Monnot, currently priest-in-charge of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church and director and retreat leader, Called to Abundant Life: Leadership Consulting in the Diocese of Northern California. The Rev. Elizabeth Duff Popplewell, currently rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cedar Falls, in the Diocese of Iowa.
