Georgia woman drives into crowd of people around fire pit after fight with boyfriend, troopers say

A Georgia woman was arrested early Saturday, after police say she drove into a crowd of people sitting around a bonfire.The crash happened shortly after midnight on Saturday in Long County.According to Georgia State Patrol, Catherine Poppell, 18, had gotten into an altercation with her boyfriend earlier in the night. After the altercation, she got into a family member's car, then drove that car onto the lawn of a residence directly across the street, according to GSP.Authorities said Poppell ended up hitting a parked Nissan Altima. She then continued driving into the group of people who were sitting around a bonfire, according to the GSP. Three people were injured.Poppell was arrested at the scene. She has since been charged with failure to maintain lane, 'DUI Less Safe' and serious injury by vehicle.GSP says the most seriously injured person was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah to undergo surgery.The mother of one of the victims said her daughter witnessed the vehicle driving towards them. She thought it was going to stop, but it never did.The accident will be investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).
