Frederick deputy heading to Russia for World Special Olympics

A Frederick County sheriff's deputy will head to Russia in January to represent law enforcement in the Special Olympics World Winter Games. "I started right out of the gate being involved with Special Olympics. It's near and dear to my heart. I have a sister with Down syndrome," Deputy Amber Owens said.Owens is gearing up for a trip of a lifetime in which she will represent the law enforcement community at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Russia."She's just a great example of how our law enforcement community embraces our athletes," Special Olympics Maryland President and CEO Jim Schmutz said.Owens will run the final leg of the torch run. She was nominated for the honor based on her commitment to Special Olympics athletes. It has been a personal mission after witnessing her younger sister being bullied as a child."I wasn't having it, even as a young child. From that point on, I knew it was my passion and I needed to be that voice," Owens said.About 300 athletes from around the country will attend the World Winter Games, including three from Maryland."Jenny Herman from Carroll County; Larry Mills from St. Mary's County; and Elena Camacho from Anne Arundel," Schmutz said.Since 1986, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $55 million for Special Olympics athletes. Owens raised money by becoming a virtual super plunger this year. She said she can't wait to be a part of raising awareness on a world stage."Inclusion is here. It's not just me standing up for my sister, it's so much more. It's so many more people that are the on the same wavelength and want to do more to educate more, and it's going to be mind-blowing," Owens said.
