And the day after the first president ial debate between former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. That event is obviously a major topic of conversation today, specifically concerning who won, who did or didnt lie about things. Whether the moderators were choosing sides. We start off with a look at some of the reaction across the board. Senior white House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich has details live from the north lawn. Good evening, jacqui. Jacqui good evening, bret. The Harris Campaign believes the Vice President did so well they want to do it all over again in a second debate. They even posted the full hour and 40 minutes from last night on x. Calling it their newest ad. While harris landed a lot of punches, she also left a lot on the table. Kamala harris, could goode debate. Good to see you. After glo of good night may be shorter than hoped. Pundits said harris won the debate. Undecided voters werent so sure, quote. She did not seem much different from mr. Biden and they wanted change most of all what they wanted to hear and didnt was the fine print. It gets flushed out in terms of what she is for. My prediction is she gets weaker. Asked about this she is biden. Clearly im not Joe Biden. [laughter] top harris surrogates left reaching on the spin room floor. I didnt hear a single thing that was different than Joe BidenS Plan. Thats news to me. Look at just the difference than the way she addressed the issue of abortion and how she was able to humanize it. Again and again. She is laying out her vision. She is laying out her plans, her demeanor, her approach to leadership. His vision though. Every leader is different. Democrats still dancing around harriS Past support for progressive policies like Gender Transition Surgery for detained migrants funded by taxpayers. Her values have not changed. Harris did achieve her goal, get trump angry so he would spend the night defending himself not articulating hiS Plans. Hoping the contrast would be enough. Donald trump was fired by 81 Million people. But, in the process, harris failed to offer specifics like how she would achieve a ceasefire In Gaza and made false statements of her own. There is not one member of the united States Military who is in active duty in a combat zone. Forgetting the 3400 u. S. Troops working to defeat isis in iraq and syria. Marines under attack from houthis since last fall or the three soldiers killed by iranian proxies in jordan this january. Today no Push Momentum from harris taking the day off the trail to mark 9 11 going in for another handshake with trump whose team is seizing on this moment Biden Trading Hats with a Trump Supporter at the Shanksville Fire station. The White House says after calling for unity. What harris left unsaid in the debate renewS Pressure for interviews after New York timeS Poll this week showed 31 of registered voters and 28 of likely voters say they need to learn more about her, bret. Historically, following debates in the past, former President Trump has been behind in the polls. As it currently stands in the real clear Politics Average of polls, harris maintains a slight edge in that average. After the first debate in 2020, President Bidens lead over President Trump was much higher. He had a 9 point advantage. And that first debate was characterized by many as chaotic, with personal jabs and taunts amid clashes over policy. Make sure you in fact let people know. He doesnt want to answer the question. Im not going to answer the question. Why wont you answer that question . You want to put a new supreme court justice. Radical left. You shut up, man. Bret so four years earlier, a Record Average of 84 Million viewers watched Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumps first faceoff. Donald supported the invasion of iraq. Wrong. That is absolutely wrong. Proved over and over again. Bret so following that debate if you looked at the Polls Trump trailed clinton nationally again by 9 percentage points. The location of that last Night Showdown between Trump And Harris is significant. Past debates have shown and appeared to benefit former President Trump in pennsylvania polling. Current polls show the former president and the Vice President really in a dead heat in the critical swing state. In 2020, President Biden Led Trump in pennsylvania following their first Debate Trump saw a slight boost there with voters. If we go in past president ial debates and past president ial races, President Biden obviously ended up winning the 2020 election. As you can see here. He won pennsylvania by just, lets see 1 point. Just a little bit over 1 percentage points. Major cities in Philadelphia And Pittsburgh really boosted him. Home to heavily democrats urban lieutenants. Wealthy voters. Both helped propel Biden To victory in pennsylvania. Take a look back to 2016. We can see trump won that state by less than one point. Thanks to counties where republican leaning voters, rural voters live. Zoom out in 2016. Can you see if past iS Prologue, pennsylvania could play a pivotal Role Either Way again in this election. She won the debate because she came in with a strategy to taunt and goad mr. Trump into diving down Rabbit Holes of personal Grievance And Vanity that let her policies and history largely untouched. He always takes the bait. Like when she answered a question on immigration by knocking trumps rallies. People start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. Court documents reveal Asif Merchant is accused of attempting to commit an act of terrorism that transcends national boundaries as well as murder for hire. Target in the foiled plot was alleged to be an alleged politician and possibly former President Trump. Just last week in canada a 20yearold pakistani man was arrested accused of plotting a Mass Shooting Event at a jewish center here in New York city. Hurricane francine has just made landfall in south louisiana. Not too far from the coast of where Hurricane Francine made landfall as a category 2 whopping 100 mileperhour winds. We just experienced the northeastern you incomes out power to thousands already the problem is the Sturg Storm Surge area on the Coast Line like Grand Isle was demolished three years by Hurricane Ida as well as a foot of rain in a region already taken ample amounts of precipitation this summer. They are well above the amounts. We have a little bit of a lul right now. This System Wind will continue throughout the night. State of emergency in play. Nearly 2500 National Guard members are activated to try to help anyone in peril as well as swift boats and other entities that can help these folks it. Will be a long night here in louisiana as the system will track over to mississippi, alabama, and into northern states. Bret . Bret okay, robert, thank you. Lets find out where francine is and where she is headed. Adam klotz is here at the Weather Center with that. Still a long ways to go with this system even though we talk about a landfall, still a category 2 storm. Ultimately the legacy of this storm probably going to be the brain rain. Doesnt matter landfall is now. Going to direct all this moisture with it. Still looking at winds 100 mileS Per hour as it makes that landfall getting closer and closer to new orleans. That is an area under a Hurricane Watch because its going to be a close path. The Hurricane Warning all the parishes right along the coast. And a couple of those inland. New orleans though still going to feel the brunt of this even though that Eye Wall Isnt going to cross over it. Currently seeing tropical Storm Force Winds Everything in the yellow. As you get into the orange thats more of a Hurricane Gust and then you see your hurricane winds there closer to the core of the storm. Again, this is just now making landfall all of that is going to push inland. As it moves inland it will quickly start to weaken. Thats the nature of these systems, they need the warm water to ultimately fuel themselves. What are the winds at currently . Coastal winds right along further inland. You look at a place like new orleans, gusts up to 41 mileS Per hour. We expect thats going to continue to climb. But i told you that the legacy of this storm ultimately is going to be all of the moisture that this haS Picked up over the gulf. It is bringing a ton of rain with it. Thats that very front leading edge. And it is really coming down there. These green boxes are currently Flash Flood warnings. So the rain coming down incredibly quickly. Nowhere for all that moisture to go. Its been raining actually a lot along the northern gulf coast. So the ground is already saturated. Flooding is the really big concern. You see a 3 on a scale of 4 as far as Flash Flood risk goes on wednesday. Thats going to linger into thursday. Ultimately up to nashville on friday. The system is going to stall out in the midwest, the south, and were going to be talking about a whole lot of rain the next couple of days. Bret all right. Well track it. Adam, thank you. Today we talk about that with two West Point graduates who now serve in congress. We welcome in michigan republican congressman John James and new York Democrat pat ryan. They were cadets at the time of the attacks. Each served in iraq a few years later Congressman Ryan first to you this day obviously brings a lot of memories but take you back to West Point and kind of getting word of these towers coming down. Well, john, and i actually roomed across the hall from each other in the barracks. I remember watching live that horrific second strike on the second tour and that night we actually all 4,000 cadets went out on the Grassy Green Plain and stood silently In The Dark for taps. We didnt even know how many were lost but we certainly knew our future, our Countrys Future was going to change and i think its so important that we keep that spirit in mind. And the Unity And Patriotism that we felt, the impulse to run towards the danger and the damage. Bret congressman james . The thing that i remember the most about that is remembering it all hitting us. Before that time, we were there to get a good education. We there were to play sports. We there were to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. But that was the first moment we realized were going to war. That was the moment that we realized that we would have to stand up in defense of this nation to make sure that things like this never happened again. Our class, the class of 2004 has suffered the most casualties of any class since the Vietnam War because we were the first class to take the oath of affirmation. Thats essentially when you are rising to your junior year thats when you start your five Year Obligation begins. Were the first class to do that, and we paid a heavy toll for it. But we all love our country. We put our country first. We put our country first then. We are putting our country first now. Bret yall are working on a resolution for to designate thiS Patriot week. Why do that Congressman Ryan . Well, i was just going to actually say im wearing the names of our classmates on this Memorial Bracelet that so many fellow vets wear i know from many generations of conflicts. We got to remind this country were in a really tough time. We talk about this a lot. We got to remind us of our better angels. Remind how we felt, how united how our resolve, our strength, our shared Pain And Grief that we turned into Action And Pride and so, i think about my two boys who are 2 and 5. I want them to feel that i want every american to remember starting with September 11th and going actually until Constitution Day which would end Patriot Week what this country is all about. Bret congressman james, we often see and we are seeing your post Congressman Ryan there, we often see a lot of fighting, obviously, on Capitol Hill about everything. You guys have a long relationship. You both served in iraq. And you obviously were at West Point together. But, there are things getting done on The Big Picture republicans and democrats up on Capitol Hill. One of the reasons we do this Common Ground. We are actually getting a lot of good things done and a lot of them, most of them that we have done is bipartisan manner. Everything from Patriot Week to our antihuman Trafficking Bill we just passed on what is called it has a lot of bipartisan support just passed by not just look after american citizens but understand that america has a moral on obligation to look after the downtrodden those enslaved across the world. Everything from read Night Hope or Veteran Entry to apprenticeship. A number of things we have done working together make the america and the world a better place. We have undergone lifetime of service when we swore to the constitution, 18 years old and continuing that service from combat to congress and looking forward to finishing strong in this 118th. Bret after the debate last night, after as you are getting ready to head towards november 5th. Congressman ryan, its only going to get more divisive, i would assume, before election day. What do you tell people about that as you close in on novembe . Im worried about our country. Im worried about our politics. Im worried about people in both parties calling to the worst of us. I know it almost sounds cliche, but i think we really learned in our service its aboutwhen we were going on patrol i didnt care your party. I didnt care your race, gender, Sexual Orientation or what team you rooted for although im a yankees fan. It was about the mission we had to accomplish together. We have you know, by force of personality in some ways operated that way here in congress. And thats refreshing to me. Thats how im going thats a lot of what im going to talk about and have talked about with my constituents in my community. Bret point here congressman james, military recruitment, there is a lot of concern about the military. The goals back in 2021 were all met, but if you look at the latest, the current fiscal year, they are on track for recruitment goals, but its in part because, perhaps, they have lowered those exceptions, they have lowered the exceptions from recent years. Are you concerned about the military and people stepping up . I am. Leadership is important. And people need to remember that a United America is undefeated. They need to see that leadership emulated from the top. Which is why i think there should be more veterans in congress not less. People who are used to working in the most austerous circumstances realizing No One has a monopoly on the right answer. Working together representing the people of the united states we get to a more perfect union. Thats inspirational type of leadership that our younger generations are looking forward to. Its up to us as leaders to be able to paint that vision and be able to lead by example to actually craft an america that they are excited to fight for just like we were. We were young, 17, 18 when we got in the military. And we truly believed that by continuing to call on our higher angels and by leading by example, like were doing right here today, working in a bipartisan manner to get things done for the american people. We can truly show the younger generation this is america worth fighting for. Bret you both are examples Congressman Ryan and congressman james. Bret Speaker Mike Johnson haS Pulled a vote on a temporary Spending Bill that would keep federal agencies and programs funded for six months when the new Budget Year begins october 1st. That move comes as it was becoming clear the measure lacked the votes to pass. The legislation included a provision that would require people registering to vote to provide proof of citizenship. The abc moderators anchor David Muir and lindsey davis, Weekend Anchor and correspondent for such shows as Gma And Nightline were far more aggressive against Donald Trump, correcting his version of events five times compared to zero for Kamala Harris. Its not that the Vice President didnt offer them opportunities. I made that very clear in 2020. I will not ban fracking. Thats not true. She said Joe Biden would oppose fracking. And what has been happening under Donald Trumps Abortion Bans, couples who pray and and and dream of having a family are being denied ivf treatments. Trump has actually been a leading advocate of in vitro fertilization. Donald trump the candidate has said in this election there will be a bloodbath. Nothing from abc. Even though it was long ago established that trump was talking about a bloodbath for the auto industry. It was the same story when harris accused trump of wanting to sign a national Abortion Ban and pursuing the heritage foundationS Project 2025. Both of which he has disavowed. There were crickets from abc. When the former president said crime was rising President Trump as you know the fbi says overall violent crime is actually coming down in this country. Harris was asked to explain her abandonment of left wing stances from four years ago but wasnt really pressed. Sharp difference from when trump was asked about january 6th. Charles yeah, i think thats what a lot of people are going to think about last as they go, you know, to vote. Because things are getting worse rapidly, particularly in the economic front. One they call the Household Survey and the other the establishment where they contact businesses and then one of the big problems with all Government Data but particularly with Jobs Numbers recently fewer and fewer establishments fill out the survey. If you have seen ups and downs throughout this election, its been with the democrats who have to make a decision. Are they going to be committed and enthusiastic to vote for her and where she goes in the next few days and where the other candidates go is very interesting. They are trying to expand the map to north carolina. The Kamala Harris people think that is a real possibility. And pay attention to the senate republicans who really want to make sure that they not just get back the majority but they have enough cushion. They are looking for some more donations. Right .
