In the city of Fort Myers, each member of the city council has $5,000 in discretionary funds through which public groups can receive donations of city funding for worthy programs.
This week, Councilman Liston Bochette questioned whether the council does a good enough job of "vetting" distribution of the funds, recalling his disappointment with one group he chose to fund during his prior term.
"I had distributed some discretionary funds and was dissatisfied by the lack of reports I got back on how that money was used," Bochette said. "It makes sense that if we're going to be disbursing public funds, taxpayers money, that we follow a procedure, a letter or request a proposal how that money would be used."
