A former Eugene day care worker pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree criminal mistreatment and tampering with evidence related to the 2018 death of an infant in her care, while having charges of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter dismissed.
Nicole Sumpter was charged in connection to the death of a 9-month-old infant that stopped breathing in her care at Little Big Blessings in Eugene. The infant, William Cannon, died days later in the hospital.
Sumpter was sentenced Lane County Circuit Court to three years of probation for the two charges, which included knowingly withholding “necessary and adequate” medical attention and physical care from Cannon, and intentionally deleting photo evidence.
