Last summer Eugene Eubanks went through four weeks of COVID-19 hell. Everything hurt. He was so weak he couldn't walk more than a few steps, so he crawled. He needed help to get to the bathroom. He couldn't eat and lost 30 pounds. At one point, he opened his safe, got out his will and called his family.
Just in case.
He doesn't want anyone else to experience that. So that's why he was knocking on doors in a Westside subdivision this week, on a hot afternoon with more than a hint of summer to it.
Wearing a yellow long-sleeved shirt labeled "State Emergency Response Team," Eubanks was one of 12 people hired by the state who went door-to-door in the Westchester subdivision off Crystal Springs Road.
