Take a look at Interest Rates with the 10 year and 30 year treasury yields pulling back this morning as they sit at 16 year highs, the 30 year at 5 , 5. 079 , and 10 year at 4. 952 . Thats down 4 andahalf basis points this morning. Federal reserve chairman jay powell signaling yesterday the fed will likely extend its pause on Interest Rates noting that inflation is, quote, still too high and lower Economic Growth is likely needed to bring down inflation. Joining me right now is federated hermes chief equity market strategist, phil orlando. Great to see you. What did you make of the powell speech yesterday . Good morning, maria. Thank you again for having me back. So i think powell threaded the needle exactly right. You look at just a couple of key data points recently. Weve got retail Sales Numbers on tuesday for the month of september that were very strong. Yesterday we got initial weekly jobless claims. The survey week for the month of october was at a nine month low. The labor markets very strong. Last week the most recent readings we got on inflation, the cpi and ppi still very firm. So in our view, its absolutely appropriate for the Interest Rates from the Federal Reserve to remain higher for longer. The question is are we going to get another quarter point hike from the fed november 1st or december 13th or january 31st or does the Federal Reserve let the bond market do the heavy lifting, benchmarks are up would 5 , 16 year high as you pointed out. Do they just be patient, let the bond market do the heavy lifting and hope for the best . We dont expect to see a cut in Interest Rates before the very back end of next year. Maria im wondering if hes going to cut rates at some point, even if its the back end of next year, doesnt that mean its in response to a weakened economy . Absolutely. If we look at the Third Quarter gdp thats going to get flashed next week, with the retail sales number for september coming in pretty strong, the Third Quarter gdps going to be pretty good. Probably in that 3 plus neighborhood. In our yo our view, thats probe last strong quarter. The Fourth Quarter of this year, the first half of next year, we think, you know, maybe in that 1 neighborhood, give or take, and once the Federal Reserve sees sort of that trajectory of slower Economic Growth, we think the res response mechanism for e fed, the fed might begin to adjust Interest Rates lower but theyve got to see some evidence that the cumulative effect of the tightening, the shrinking of the balance sheet, the increase of the Interest Rates, is actually starting to bite, slow the economy, raise the rate of unemployment and slow inflation. Maria i mean, its a mystery as to why we havent seen more weakening after 11 rate hikes. We are seeing the pressure on some components of cpi like energy, oil prices are edging higher this morning as middle east tensions are continuing to move higher. Traders are on edge over whats happening next in israel, phil. What do you make of crude oil at 90. 48 a barrel this morning, thats up 1 and a quarter percent. Well, probably going higher, maria. As you remember, we put out a piece back in june, we thought the crude oil at 65 was simply too low and that were going to go up to the 80 to 90 neighborhood by the end of the year based upon fund machine mentales. Geopolitical risk wasnt really in our lexicon taken. The israel, hamas, iran situation takes that up a notch. We know in response to whats going on the iranians are trying to organize some kind of Energy Boycott against israel, against the United States. That suggests weve got to do a better job in terms of refilling the Strategic Petroleum reserve as a safety net for ourselves and increase more domestic production. I didnt hear any of those things in President Bidens speech last night. Maria yeah. I saw a headline yesterday that the u. S. Us is is going to be tg to buy millions of barrels of oil right now. Theyre going to be buying oil to fill up the Strategic Petroleum reserve at 90 a barrel. It will be expensive and tough to fill it up at these levels, dont you think. Absolutely. They assured us after taking it down by half last year they would refill it in the first half of this year at 65 a barrel. Since october 7th they arrested or detained close to 600 hamas operatives, just 60 last night, several were key players with hamas who i believe theyre taking this as an opportunity to collect these operatives and gather as much intelligence as they can. So that they might be able to find out where are those hostages, where are the hamas strongholds and the key thing as you look at all a of the missile strikes that israel has sent into palestine have been very surgical. Weve been asking for more detail going back to the first aid package and we just havent received it. Not from the white house, not from any democrat that im aware of in the house of representatives, has any more information than what we had on day one when russia went into ukraine. Thats the frustrating part about it i think is we just dont have the information. Maria i know that jordan is now staying in the race. Were going to hear more today at 10 00 a. M. There were reports yesterday that he wasp dropping out. He was backing a plan to empower the interim speaker, patrick mchenry. What are you expecting at the press conference 10 00 a. M. A this morning and what were expecting to be a third vote . I think what jim is going to lay out is his path forward. I think certainly there are a number of members now that are starting to hear from their constituents about not only do we need a speaker but they agree that congressman jordan would be the right choice. So were not sure. A lot can change even overnight on where some of these members are but like i said, im hopeful, jims going to lay out a path at you 8 00 a. M. But to get way down in the weeds there, there are some members that thought because the congress moved towards steve scalise, that there should have been a little bit more of a resounding backing of him but then when steve decided not to continue with his bid to be the next speaker, you know, kind of the pieces fell and jim jordan was obviously the next choice. I think he is somebody that cuts across the demographics of the entire conference. Its pretty obvious. I mean, on the first vote he had a wide range of members from all over the Different Committee structure too so like i said, i think jim is still a guy that can pull this together. Im just hopeful some of these members come around. Maria unfortunately, were talking all about the speakers race and were not the talking about the business of the people, were not talking about the fact that what do you have now, end 29 days until the government runs out of money again on november 17th, the investigations into the biden family influence peddling also taking the back burner, the Judiciary Committee has secured a closed door interview with Hunter Bidens special counsel, david weiss, interview set for november 7th. What are you expecting to ask and what are you expecting to hear out of this. This is something that jim jordan had been trying to pursue for some time. We finally get weiss and the attorneys are going to sit down with him it sounds like and hes going to try to explain the sweetheart deal that hunter biden was given in the first place. Or try to defend that, i guess. But its a good example of topic that we need to continue to pursue and not only judiciary, but we need to get back on track when it comes to oversight and congrcongressman comer. Thats why its so urgent and so necessary for us to continue to push hard to get that new speaker in place. Maria let me get one of our panelists in real quick. Cheryl, jump in. Were receive in the last 48 hours when it comes to some of your colleagues stories of death threats, theyre getting phone calls because of the up roar and upheaval has happened as you try to nominate a new speaker, whether jim jordan or someone else as well as calls from constituents that are very angry, hearing stories of staff on the hill being cursed out. Is that true . Are you hearing those stories . Has it gotten a little better in the last day . Yeah, i think the whole conference is concerned about it you. Itits real. Its really been happening in some offices where belligerent constituents are calling in, completely upset because we dont have a speaker and secondly because they want their member of congress to support a specific candidate. So completely unnecessary. Its unfortunate. And all the members of the conference are really upset about whats going on. Maria well, i mean, it seems so reckless that Kevin Mccarthy would step down when there was no plan in place. Shouldnt he have stayed the speaker until you actually had a runner up or another nominee what that you knew could get through . Well, i mean, when the vote camp up to vacate the seat, i mean, thats the rules of the floor in the house. So theres not much that could have been done about that, other than i didnt support it and obviously 95 of the conference didnt support it. You know, we didnt i think understand kind of how difficult this process would be to get back to the place where we could get Kevin Mccarthy or anyone else in that conference elected as the next speaker. On the financial side its unfortunate whats happening with the house because obviously the republicans and many have already come out and said they wanted to reevaluate funding for ukraine after over a year and still no results there. How much more money can we give . Where are the european allies . Thats one thing that President Trump did a nice job on. He pushed the europeans to fund more whether it comes to nato or things happening in their backyard, and that is ukraine and russia. We have big hearts. We want peace around the world.
