About 200, nasdaq down 76 and s p 500 lower right now by 24. One of the issues is some weak earnings or forecasts. Ups for example beat on Second Quarter earnings but missed on revenue. The shipping company lowered the annual revenue forecast on soft ecommerce demand and reaching a labor deal with the Teamsters Union for 300,000 employees, Trucking Company yellow also filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy after years of financial struggles, growing debt. The Company Nearly 100 years old, had received more than 700 million from the Federal Reserve in aid during the pandemic. Greg, what do you think this tells us that yellow goes bankrupt, ups today has a weak forecast and misses on revenue . Is this a macroeconomic story . I think a little bit of it is macro, certainly. Look, the economy is evolving and if you look at the last year andahalf, weve had one of the biggest Interest Rate increases that weve seen if ever, not just here in the u. S. , but globally. And when you reprice Interest Rates, it affects businesses, it affects clearly assets and we are seeing some of that. In march, we had the hiccup with the Regional Bank issues. This morning we have issues with the italian banks. You have the earnings from ups clearly you have some downgrades with some of the u. S. Banks and you look at a company like yellow, yes, i mean, big loans outstanding. Its going to be a liquidation story Going Forward. Openhopefully the american taxps a big chunk of the loan was given by the Treasury Department during the pandemic. Hopefully the asset sales will cover that loan. Ultimately, the taxpayer could be on the hook here for some dollars with regard to the liquidation of those assets. So the economy is evolving. I think its very uneven. I still think inflation is the bigger overriding story with regard to Interest Rates, the fed at a minimum here theyre going to hold with the potential if inflation does remain sticky and perhaps tick up, were seeing Oil Prices Tick up, the fed perhaps has to go a little higher from here and then hold. Maria what im trying to understand is if this slowdown in shipping is indicating that we are in fact looking at a slowdown in overall macroeconomic growth and are we going to hit a recession . I mean, greg, you also have moodys cutting Credit Ratings of 10 u. S. Regional banks today. They place some of the wall street big names on negative review, bank of new york, u. S. Bancorp, trueist, are under review for potential down grade and you have moodys cutting the ratings of small and midsize u. S. Banks in the middle of all the worry about the banking system, about all of the debt rolling over and what thats going to mean for some of these companies. The mack trough story the way i macro story the way i see it, we had data out of china this morning which was weak, if you look at the data out of europe, its been weak, the u. K. Has been weak, japan certainly a transition with regard to their Interest Rate policy, the one crutch in the Global Economy has really been in the u. S. If you look at the good side of the equation to shipping and things like that, goods inflation has come way, way down and the consumer is shifting more to the Services Sector which is really where the big concern for the fed is. Its that services exhousing component of inflation which includes transportation. So the macro story in general i would say is fairly weak with regard to the u. S. , the one crutch remains the consumer and the question Going Forward is you how long will the consumer hold up here with inflation remaining high as we wind down 2023 into 2024. With regard to the risks in the marketplace, you have commercial real estate rollover risk. You have Adjustable Rate Mortgage risk on the residential side to come. You have rollover risk with the u. S. Treasury, our interest expense now is approaching a trillion with Interest Rates at these levels, old debt rolling off into new higher Interest Rate structure Going Forward, this is why you see if you look at the rate structure, maria, were seeing the fed on hold for 2023 but then were seeing rates come down. The market is saying that rates will need to come down in 2024, 2025 as we do see that rollover risk come into play. Maria yeah, for sure. Weve got lots of risk there. I should point out there are some good stories this morning as well, in healthcare, eli lilly stock is rallying on a better than expected quarter, novo is rallying, 12 andahalf percent on a weight loss drug and better than expected guidance there. So weve got some bright spots on earnings in healthcare this morning but, matt, were going to be focused on inflation data later in the week. Weve got the july Consumer Price index out on thursday, economists are expecting Consumer Prices to rise two tenths of a percent month over month, 3. 3 year over year. Weve got the july Producer Price index report out on friday. Obviously inflation has come way down from the highs of a year ago. Which is a good part of the story. But is that the only focus for markets this beak . Week . No. Youve got focus on the macro story which is sending stocks lower. Thats exactly right, maria. I think inflation is a dominant story within this. Were seeing inflation, were seeing it back up again and thats why its too early for the fed to declare that mission has been accomplished on inflation. But ive been spending the past months traveling and meeting with clients. One of the most common questions that i get from them is about the macro story, is the economy good enough to sustain where the market is today and i think so far the answer is actually yes. So we have some more negative earnings out this morning. We have the bank downgrades. Incorporid say its a little h. We know the risks of these companies have actually exceeded expectations but the main message that earnings are better than expected and theyve been consistently better than expected and i think what a lot of economists and strategists have missed is underestimating the ability of the American Consumer to continue spending and it comes down to jobs. People have jobs. People are making more money. So when i look at the market, theres definitely risks and thats why we want to have Higher Quality parts of the market. I think theres opportunities. Theres a great opportunity to redeploy capital into areas like you mentioned, healthcare. Healthcare is so far this year, really good numbers. Look at industrials. Some of the heavy machinery makers, equipment makers, theres a lot of Infrastructure Spending ha happening and thosee Higher Quality parts of the market that i want to lean into right now. Two 7eleven workers in stockton, california under investigation for assault after they fought a thief who targeted their store three times. A warning that this video we are about to show you is graphic. You can see the masked man throwing cigarettes off the shelf and then into a trash can. One worker pulls him to the ground, trying to stop him from stealing while another hits him with a wooden stick. That man ended up walking out of the store empty handed. The video was taken july 29th, the third time in two days, the same man robbed the store. It shouldnt get to that point and certainly there are boundaries and we saw that a little bit with the former marine in the new york city subway who w reacted but the reality is, it shouldnt have to get to this point. Thats the issue here. Its getting to this point because we dont have law and order in many of these areas. Maria i mean, the arrogance of it, that the police is right across the street. I mean, its absolutely staggering they would do this knowing the police is right across the street. They probably know they can get away with it. To think the people who are protecting or defending themselves are the ones under investigation here. Thats one of the tragedies. People feel theyre not protected, they have to take the law into their own hands and they are held accountable for it and the criminals are going free and were saying that shoplifting isnt real theft, were letting people off more than we ever have. So i think its very important for congress to hear testimony. It will be enlightening to the country, to say the least. This is a very important guy. Maria were waiting to hear this testimony. I know you and your colleagues are on recess right now but this is a priority for judiciary in september. But i want to get your take on where you sit in terms of where this is going. Would you be poised to vote for an inquiry into impeachment for biden . Oh, well i think an impeachment inquiry is certainly something that needs to go forward. I think thats a very important aspect of where we are. We have seen incredible criminal activity, evidence of it time and time again. The fbi, fd1023, the form that came out, devon archers testimony that said President Joe Biden as Vice President was involved in Hunter Bidens business dealings at least 20 phone calls worth and the 1023 goes back and says theres recordings of joe biden with the president of burisma gas company, the ukrainian company. Hes got at least two recordings there, 15 with hunter and then youre seeing just more evidence and more evidence coming out, real hard concrete evidence. So yes, an impeachment inquiry is on the table. I think its very important that we go there and that the country sees that this is a corrupt presidency. This is a corrupt administration all the way to the very top and we in oversight, we need to hold them accountable through the power of the purse. Maria well, we also want to know how youre going to do that. Im going to get into the next issue with the fbi in a moment but you just said holding them accountable through the power of the purse. What are your plans when you come back in september in terms of holding them accountable to the purse with these 12 Appropriations Bills . Well, you know, weve got two appropriations left that have to go through committee. One is labor and the other is in my opinion the most important one and that is commerce justice science. That hes where we decide on the budget, we write the check for the department of justice. Which includes the fbi and the atf and the entire prosecutorial branch of the department of justice. So that is where we will be cutting their budget. The barber is open and we need to hold them accountable through money. The only thing the agencies in washington, d. C. Listen to is money. If you dont have the ability to cut their budget, to eliminate their personnel, to trim their cocktail allowances, if you will, their reception budget, you name it, if you dont have that power, they will ignore you. But we have that power and were going to use that power, thats for certain. Maria were all watching because every day we learn of another upset or another misdeed from the fbi leadership. House judiciary chairman jim jordan says fbi agent elvis chan lied to congress about his communications with facebook and the hunter biden laptop story. We talked about elvis chan over and over again on this program. He testified that he was confident he was not part of any meetings with big tech about hunter biden. Jordan now reveals that there is internal facebook documents proving that agent chan had a secret followup call with facebook about the laptop on october 15th,2020, just one day after the New York Post story dropped, congressman. So youve got the fbi telling facebook, telling twitter to censor information, amplify lies, suppress truth, right before an election and where is the accountability . I mean, in the middle of all of this, which is, you know, a suggesting criminality of taking off of this money in, the biden family, youve got one indictment after the next of President Trump. Youre a congressman from georgia. Are you expecting an indictment from the state of georgia on President Trump . Well, it wouldnt surprise me if you look at the timing of the indictments, every time that you see a significant piece of evidence coming out against joe biden, against the biden crime family, then you have another indictment from President Trump, whether its from alvin bragg in new york, whether its from jack smith and his multiple indictments and now you have the potential of one coming out of georgia here. It wouldnt surprise me whatsoever that we see another indictment of President Trump when another bombshell piece of evidence of corruption from joe biden and the biden crime family, i think youll see that indictment just literally roll the next day or the next day after. The former president blasted President Biden on truth social saying in part bidens is using the special counsel to take away his First Amendment rights. I spoke to West Virginia attorney general Patrick Morrisey on sunday morning futures on the possibility of the trial being moved out of washington, d. C. And into West Virginia. Watch. There is no chance that President Trump is going to get a fair trial in washington dc with this biden special counsel jack smith, this obama leftist judge, judge tonya shutkin and the 95 trump deranged d. C. Jury pool. The problem is the decision to move this trial is going to be up to this obama judge and shes not going to do that so we should expect that this jury this judge and the jury is going to find him guilty and convict him. The obama stacked d. C. Circuit will confirm the decision no matter what it is and the Supreme Court will have to step in and reverse this case. Maria this is absolutely incredible what is taking place here. Mike, whats your take on the length of a trial like this or the length of a case like this . Here we are in a president ial election season. Youve got the first debate happening literally in two weeks. Youve got the Iowa Caucuses literally happening in two months. And youve got a year or so away from the election in november of 2024. When you look at what needs to take place in a trial like this, in a case like this, where youve got depositions and youve got discovery, where trumps lawyers are going to have to get access to all of the evidence the way that the doj has access to everything. Do you believe that all of that can take place within this year, before the 2024 election . Because jack smith says he wants, quote, a speedy trial. Yeah, theres no chance that trump will get the evidence that he needs and a fair trial before the election. They know this, they waited the biden Justice Department waited 29 months to indict trump for his president ial records, hes allowed to have under the president ial records act, they wanted 31 months to indict trump for objecting to a president ial election which hes allowed to do under the electoral count act of 1887 and the First Amendment. Its only a crime to object to president ial elections in third world countries like zimbabwe. Otherwise democrats would be in prison for objecting to republican wins. Jack smith is trying to rush this after waiting 31 months because this is obvious election interference. What is the rush. Maria this is amazing. This is 78 pending criminal charges. I dont think anyone has ever seen anything like this and yet a federal judge did deal a blow to special counsel jack smiths former President Trump classified documents case, judge aileen cannon questioning why the Justice Department is using a washington, d. C. Grand jury in the florida case. She is also denying that the special counsels request for a sealed filing, striking two from the record, mike. Your thoughts on the latest move . Judge aileen cannon is a real judge and shes going to stand up for all defendants rights against government abuses including a former president of the united states. Judge tonya shutkin in washington, d. C. Is a partisan judge and theres no chance that President Trump will get a fair process or fair trial in washington, d. C. Jack smith knows this. March rick garland knows this. President biden knows this, this is lawfare to take out President Trump because they feel they cant beat him on novemb november 7th, 2024. Maria its pretty extraordinary and then in the meantime all of this evidence that is being released on potential biden family crimes. I mean, bribery. House judiciary chairman jim jordan released more internal facebook documents alleging that fbi agent elvis chan lied under oath about discussing the biden laptop facebook. Chan testified he had no internal knowledge of the laptop investigation. He said he was only part of one october 2020 conversation with facebook about hunter but then weve got these internal documents and they show a facebook employee writing that chan was involved in more than one conversation about the infamous laptop and then he, quote, advised that there was no Current Evidence to suggest any foreign connection or direction of the leak, mike.
