Katie clearly we have a relief, maria, double whammy on friday, unemployment report and then the news about the president so it wasnt surprising that we had a down day but i think youre seeing not just in the International Markets but the u. S. Futures this morning a nice relief rallies as investors can take that off their plates of things to worry about hopefully as the president s prognosis seems to be very good. Maria what do you want to do here going to yearend, katie, how are you allocating capital and are you expecting that we will see a growth backdrop for this economy in the Fourth Quarter . I mean, we are coming off the massive contraction in the Second Quarter and we are waiting on revised numbers for the Third Quarter . I think expectations are really high for a very good quarter for gdp, thats been reflected in the market. I think the concerns now are Fourth Quarter and beyond and with the stalemate in washington relative to fiscal package and the numbers that we saw on friday that suggested that the momentum in the economy is slowing down and in some cases significant. There are concerns of Growth Outlook going into Fourth Quarter and you glare on top of that the negative news about the pandemic and its going to be more risk averse going into the last stretch of the year and we have the election untern say among us which will dampen risk appetites. Maria what does the election mean for the markets . Lets look at the outcome here, possible scenarios with regard to policy. Do you think the markets have a feeling in terms of where they want to be allocated post election should joe biden versus President Trump . Katie its reallying interesting, although the polls seem to be sort of universally pointing to a biden win, the activity underneath the market benchmarks doesnt necessarily suggest that investors are taking one side or the other yet. I think what we learned through the path is the polls arent always accurate number 1 and number 2, its difficult to judge what the market is going to do based on any one out come and in general whether its a Republican Administration or democrat administration, the markets do go up. I think investors are a bit more constructive relative to the election than you would think reading the headlines. I think theres two pretty stark differences between the what platforms, the implications are driven by the complexition and having minimum tax would clearly impact some technology companies. Youve got obviously banks and energy that are that have very highly impacted by one or the other platforms but those are areas that have been already damaged by the market already and down tried relative to high flying tech stocks. You would think that banks and energy were already pretty done in the dump here. Maria yeah, i think you make a good point about congress because thats where we will see laws passened and i know why the market actually wants to see results there. Let me bring lee carter, you heard what katie said, we are not sure about the polls, what can you tell us . Leering its really hard in this moment to say whats happening with the polls because if you look back at 2016 we had almost exact spread between the president and Hillary Clinton as we do right now with joe biden. In fact, things got even worse another week out when access hollywood tapes came out. Theres a lot that can happen in 30 days. A lot of people right now are trying to figure out what can make of everything and i think the performance of the president last week at the at the debate actually did hurt a little it. He dropped a point in the polls after that and the big question i have, right, is i do remember 2016, people were talking about if the president did win what happened to the markets and they said it was devastating for the markets and now im curious what would happen if biden were to win. Would that be a devastating thing . Maria katie, you said it, you think its more important to focus on congress and whether or not the republicans keep the senate and and win the house, is that right . Katie but even if they dont, maria, i think its a series of puts and takes under a blue wave, for example. Youve got some tax policies that would unface the market but also pretty strong growth policies that might improve the revenue and topline growth. Its hard to disentangle initially what the impact would be. Under a blue wave the timing of the changes, i think its really is really uncertain right now given the fact that we are still very much in the midst of this pandemic. Lee so i think it is significant, what i do think also that it has become very complicated to explain. Theres so many stories here, so many pieces of information and trying to put the puzzle together that i think it need to be simplified to the American People. I think the American People understand this much and this is what they really need to understand, right, is that there was, in fact, some bad channels that were conspiring against the president from the beginning and i think there should be significant questions about that and i think that should also joe biden was in the white house at that time so i think people have to question what talked about being a decent guy, is there something that we need to know about his involvement here, what did he know and i think thats a good question for people to be asking. Now i think the bottom line is this, though, theres so many issues that are important to the American People right now, theres covid, theres the economy, theres our future, this issue is one thats going to go all the way to the bottom but the question is this, can Americans Trust americans and government institutions and thats at the heart of this and thats really important that we are able to do that. Futures are higher this morning, we have a rally underway of 21 0 points of the dow industrials. All three major indices ended in the red on friday but off of session lows but now we have this rally underway this morning. What are you expecting . How closely tied do you believe diagnoses and updates about the president is to the markets performance . The more marketfriendly is definitely tied to market performance. If we get a blue wave, that has not yet been priced into the markets. That would be a big hit for corporate profitability from one simple thing, higher taxes. I think trump beats the virus, comes out looking strong, maria, is able to tout his more marketfriendly economic platform and is perceived as having a possibility of winning reelection, then i think the markets definitively move higher. Maria all right. Well, lets talk about policy because a lot of people are watching tax increases potentially from joe biden. Democratic president ial candidate biden has proposed to raise the Corporate Tax from the current 21 to 28 , impose a new minimum tax on u. S. Companies, increase taxes on foreign income of many u. S. Based multinationals. Jack, this is all part of the tax plan to raise 4 trillion in tax increases. That revenues going to go to other big programs, though, because hes got like the green biden plan which is going to cost 2 trillion. So its not as if that money is going to go paying down debt. Your thoughts on the impact on markets . Sure. We calculate that the impact on the Corporate Tax rate would be roughly a onetime 10 of 10 pere point hit to the market. That money, however, will be deployed back into infrastructure, education, healthcare. So it will seek some stimulus. We will ultimately get a multiplier effect. That wont occur until a few years down the line. Maria all right. So you think that markets if theres a democrat sweep, which katherine just told us is not priced into the market, do you expect a selloff, if its clear that theres a sweep and he probably would be able to get that through . We calculate a democratic sweep at around 40 . Actually, thats down over the last couple weeks, in our opinion. But we also have to add biden alone would be another 20. So we are giving biden essentially a 60 over trump 40 40 . But that said, the 40 chance of a sweep, yeah, 10 percentage point decline, maybe some incremental volatility but were not looking for cascading market, no. Maria all right. Lets talk about the fed, the minutes for the september fed meeting are due out this week. The federal funds rate at zero. Ken, what are you expecting for the Fourth Quarter growth story and the earnings . Were going to start getting Third Quarter earnings reporting in about a week. Nancy lazar says theres an upside to her expectations for growth of 5 in the Fourth Quarter. She says that its probably going to be higher than that. Your expectations from the minutes this week and what it means for growth and earnings . Well, the fed is drawing a line really for the next three years to have lower or zero Interest Rates and that gives the market enormous confidence. Companies will continue to improve, those in knowledge and Service Industries selectively the best, some physical businesses its really tough. Octobers a month of volatility and if we hit the trifecta with all the democrats winning in congress and the president , its happened four times since president true man. Man. Truman. When you look at 12 months, the market recovers or does better. Were looking for an s p 500 target of 3650. Thats 9 above. So our message is look beyond, look beyond the volatility of october, and some of the near term resistance that were seeing in the news today. Maria so any thoughts on Third Quarter earnings which are going to start coming out next week . It does also start with the banks, which generally are going to have more of a cloudy uncertain outlook, but once we roll into the Knowledge Industries which would be technology and then selectively housing, thats going to give the underpinnings of confidence. Again, when you look at earnings its really he depending upon which sectors of the market youre talking about. We would overweight technology and consumer discretionary. Battleground state poll, either camp could win most of these battleground states. I think thats an objective view is that the battleground states are very tight in most polling. In the next 30 days, the reason i believe were going to win the polls is we have the compelling Value Proposition of an American Economy that is surging higher right now. And i know we still have a lot of work to do to get back to the heights of the trump boom that we enjoyed in the earlier parts of this year but the results are tangible and there are very datadriven reasons to be incredibly optimistic about the trajectory of this economy. Do you think were going to know on Election Night . Do you think what kind of a result are you expecting and you are expecting the democrats to contest it, right . Unfortunately, maria.
