If you look at all the charts, lets just take amazon, for example, which dubbe doubled doubled. I couldnt believe it. It doubled from the marlo until the 13th. It hit an alltime high then. It came back down sharply. Then we had one great reversal back up and now it looks like, yeah, all these tech stocks no matter what chart you look at. You can look at that. You can look at facebook. You can look at netflix. Theyre all in that group that make up seemingly 99 of everyones portfolio. It looks like theyre going to have a pretty good selloff. Dagen gary, what a trigger here . I want to remind people, this is after the houston consolate was shut down by the United States because of, well, theft of intellectual property, the indictment of two chinese nationals for hacking american firms involved in Coronavirus Research. Is it that . Is it the lack of stimulus coming from republicans . What is it here . Well, i dont think its the lack of stimulus, by the way, just to touch on that briefly. We dont even know there was an article in an opinion letter i guess in the wall street journal this morning by ron johnson, says we dont even know how we spent the first 3 trillion. And now we want to spend another trillion. I dont think its that. I think in this case, dagen, the selloffs are the market pullbacks are normally one of two things. Its the big event, a terrorist attack or something or its the steady drip of downbeat stuff. You kind of touched on it, between your headlines and what lauren was reading, pretty much hit all of them. People wake up and see protests in these big cities. That doesnten dea doesnt ende. I read this morning the amc theater chains theyre not going to open back until august. You touched on the schools, the School Openings or delayed openings, even in florida looks like theyre going to delay until push back another two weeks. Thats got to hurt the economy. People when the schools dont open, youve got to take care of your kids, you cant go out of, you cant do things. So i think its all this. And then of course you talked about the tensions with china. President trump did make the decision when it came to canceling the jacksonville portion of the convention, he had been in conversations for a few days regarding this and ultimately he made the decision to be able to cancel that and for us to make sure that however we celebrate his renomination as the republican nominee for president , we will do so in a big fashion. Dagen does it hurt does it hurt fund raising, does it hurt enthusiasm, does it hurt the campaign at all . It doesnt hurt the campaign at all. The president s enthusiasm within the Republican Party remains at a record level and we know this is a president who breaks records. I would say the enthusiasm for President Trump remains sky high. Dagen how do you make up ground . In the latest fox news poll that came out yesterday, joe biden, the former Vice President , tops President Trump in battleground states, michigan, minnesota and pennsylvania. If you look back four years ago, ill just bring up the fact that in that President Trump won, it was michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania combined by less than 78,000 votes. So youve got ground to make up. The only poll ultimately that matters is the one on election day. We have had an organization on the ground in all of those states that you just mentioned for over a year now, making sure we can contact voters, register them, get new volunteers onboard to share President Trumps message directly with the voters. In a state like wisconsin, joe biden just hired a state director to be out there. We havent left wisconsin since 2015. So we know were in a competitive race but we always run this Campaign Like a point behind because we want to win and we want to make sure that President Trump gets the opportunity to secure americas greatness for another four year. Dagen emily, jump in here. Emily im curious what the straw that broke the cam hells back was with this convention. Obviously weve known of concerns about florida for a while. I think it caught some people offguard the announcement yesterday. Im curious, what was the real precipitating factor or of was it a combination of everything at once . Well, President Trump has been thinking about this for a little bit now and he made the decision ultimately to pull back on jacksonville. Weve seen a spike in covid cases there and ultimately the president s focus remains what its always been, which is the safety and health of the American People. And so he decided against us having the convention in jacksonville. It was entirely his decision. It was entirely the right call. Dagen if youre in business, you would not continue to spend money on preparing for something if the likelihood is rising that its going to be canceled. So you dont throw money into a sinkhole if you will. Lets move on to Vice President joe biden sitting down with president barack obama in a new video for what was deemed a socially distant chat. They touted their accomplishments in office and took swipes at President Trump. Emily they are acting on a fantasy and it is an absolutely dangerous fantasy and whats particularly dangerous about it this time around is that there seems to be serious momentum. You have this big demonstration outside the mayors home and as mayor Lori Lightfoot is not an ally to your cause on the far left, maybe you have gone a little bit too far to the left. This would cost if this proposal were seriously implemented, which is basically impossible but if it were seriously implemented the lives that would be lost put their bld tears into for years, its almost hard to comprehend the loss of life and safety and all of these things. Its a fantasy if this fantasy were enacted. Whats scary is when you see the momentum behind it. Dagen one thing i want to point out of, theres been a back and forth between the mayor and chicago and President Trump and federal agents coming into the city, but these agents are working in an investigative role and it is perfectly within the purview and the power of the federal government to send agents into any city or state to investigate federal crimes. 80 of Gang Activity is drug activity. Guess what . Drug activity is a federal crime. If its a Racketeering Organization or enterprise, anything those organizations do, that is a federal crime. If you read into the details and certainly the people in the mob and other of talking heads on tv dont do that, but if you read into what these agents are doing in chicago, it is very interesting that they are looking using special technology, say from atf, meant to study ballistics evidence to connect and solve shootings. Agents will bring cases in federal court where they can pursue longer sentences. What if this works . Emily, what if this works . The question is, is that do these protesters want that to happen . I mean, like weve seen some of the proposal as to how we should investigate rape. If police wereto be defunded s stunning. I cant imagine people would want to live in that world. You raise a good point about stuff that could be useful. Some of these cities its getting to a point, especially as weve seen crime during the papandemic spike, that we have. Its dire in some of these cities. To see people wanting to go in the opposite direction is kind of mind boggling, to be honest. Dagen the reason i get so hot under the collar about this and my face turns red, even though i love chicago, never lived there, but i do live in new york city and ive been a resident here for more than a quarter of a century and it is dangerous and its getting more dangerous by the day and you have basically a mayor and even a governor who are a cocktail of arrogance and idiocy, arrogance and ignorance, its like milk of manganesea and gin. Thats resulted in massive growth, both the consumer side where weve seen demand go up as high as 300 in some categories, from the early days of the pandemic and the merchant side, as this is probably more interesting one, merchants are scrambling to move their business toss be predominantly online. What do you think this economys going to look like when we get out of this and over the long term as we see this Digital Economy penetrate even more . You know, i mean, whether its ecommerce or getting deliveries of food, people are behaving differently and those people who werent doing everything digitally obviously are being forced to now. Yeah, i think the best way of thinking about it is really as if we just skipped two to five years of Digital Economy growth. Sort of visualize your favorite ecommerce growth chart, you can immediately notice its being growing steadily, low double digit rates year on year on year, rolling along, slowly taking over our lives. We just skipped probably five years in a couple different dimensions. We taught a whole bunch of people that its completely okay to buy things online that they didnt buy online before. Two, we dragged into kind of the modern way of shopping all the folks that said im too old or im not interested or its not for me. Finally, all these businesses that have stayed in the brick and mortar world, because thats where theyve always been, have now said well, we have no choice. We have to get on it. We have to be predominantly online, Digital Economy first. Which is something that really creates Companies Like shopify and all the merchant firms, theyre experiencing a surge of demand. Maria tell me about the shopify deal. I was reading some of your comments. You mentioned Small Business and why this really moves the needle there as they try to reinvent themselves. How does the shopify deal work, max . So we had a great integration with shopify where any merchant could install an app and a firm super transparent pay over time would be available to its customers. Weve taken it a giant step further, basically making our integration ubiquitous. Any merchant on shopify can flip a switch an every consumer that comes through their Digital Store will be able to use the firm without any work on either side. Its a giant leap for us. More importantly, its a really big step towards fulfilling our mission which is fundamentally to reinvent credits and present a viable alternative to credit cards. Maria has the product rolled out yet . Not quite. Weve been working on it with our friends for a while now, its in the final stages of getting tested, make sure its ready for prime time. Maria do you think this partly has to do with what were seeing in the market . Is this why you wanted to do this kind of arrangement, because you see the Consumer Behavior changing . Absolutely. I think ive been doing this affirm project now pretty large company, not just a project, for almost a decade and the original idea and youre one of the first people to talk to me about it was this hunch that millennials and genzers are going to want a different way of playing. They want more transparency. They want trust. They dont like bankers. Theyre going to seek a better way, something thats more honest, more in tune with their view of the world. And its really worked. Maria how would you assess the economy right now and in particular the Small Business customers that youre hearing from . Many are in survival mode, especially the one thats are deeply dependent on foot traffic. Many are very focused on just maintaining cash flow. I think today, its more sales, making sure that the product you have is flying off the shelves so you can reorder. You can continue moving forward. Affirm is a tool in that department. We help consumers pay for things they wouldnt necessarily feel comfortable paying for right now. In that sense, we see ourselves as an ally to the Small Business but i think its tough out there. I think people are struggling to maintain cash flow and were doing our best to help them. Maria let me get your take on markets here. This market will not quit, even in the face of the shutdown, we are in a recession. People are expecting growth in the second half of the year but the market keeps on going up. Any thoughts on these levels in terms of valuations in this stock market. I do think that were seeing a little bit of american optimism at work, where this is not a Secular National decline of the american economy. It is a pandemic. It hit us very hard and the economys suffering. Many companies are taking market share. If you think to a Digital Economy, obviously brick and mortar is down a lot but a lot of that moves over online pretty quickly and figures itself out and so from the point of view of prpredominantly nondigital businesses theyre down 60, 70 , maybe 80 , depending on which segment youre in. If even half of that moves online that results in quadrupling of tripling some of the digital players. I think its very disruptive but the market is paying attention to those who are winning and unfortunately to those who are losing. Maria you look at the growth story, its like amazon, people are just betting on growth. Look at tesla, your former colleague at pay pal and what elon musk has done. We reported yesterday on musks earnings report, but whether or not hes saying, look, were only going to pay half the rent at some of the showrooms, your thoughts on the incredible skyrocketing situation at tesla . You know, elon continues to amaze. I think one thing maybe unites a lot of the old pay pal folks is that we all lived through a lot of stress. We were there during one of the first dotcom collapses. Weve seen 2001, 9 11, up close. Thats when we were trying to scale our company. So were all pretty good under pressure. I think thats what elon is showing, id like to believe thats what all of us took away from that company. Maria i love that sentiment, max. It really is. Its true. Xi jinping appears just determined to push on every front, internationally, almost every border issue that china has has sprung up over the last few months and theyve even been pushing further into australia and europe with coersive practices d. Dagen what do you think happens with the escalation between the u. S. And china. The houston consolate for china is closed and they retaliate. How dangerous is the titfortat, even though obviously justified in the United States, youre stealing secrets, stealing intellectual property, the u. S. Is not going to stand by and let it continue to happen. Many in texas have been worried about chinese intellectual property theft for years. It has been a hub of concern. So i think its not surprising that houston was the target out of all of the chinese consolates. Im surprised the administration went as far as they did and closed it down. Well see what the chinese do by the end of the day. They havent promised theyll actually close down the consolate. I think the chinese overnight moved to sort of deescalate the situation a little bit closing down chengdu. They could have chosen another u. S. Consolate in china that does more business, that does more than just visa stamping. This was a deescalation on their part, i think. An effort not to see this actually spiral further out of control. Dagen mike lee . Hi, zach. How close do you think the u. S. Is to taking aggressive action against members of the communist party, such as asset seizures and sanctions against individual members that are active in the United States . I think were getting there pretty quickly. Weve already seen these threats over hong kong. There are a couple of steps that would prompt action many one would be a real crackdown in hong kong using substantial force against protesters. Thats certainly not out of the question. And weve already seen them go after bureau members. The administration is taking the gloves off here, theyre willing to go after communist party senior members, after their families i think in some cases and certainly after their travel ability and their bank accounts. So yeah, this is just a real step change. Weve never seen anything like this certainly over the last 50 years. Dagen on that note, before we go, ill point out that theres the news that the chinese tycoon who is a communist Party Insider ren zequon, he was expelled from the party after publishing an essay that targeted the chinese leader xi jinping and prosecutors are preparing corruption charges against him. So its certainly sending a chill through the ranks of the wealthy and the elite in beijing. Its not two parties negotiating anymore. This is not democrats versus republicans. Its house democrats, its senate republicans, and its the white house. And theres a sort of triparty element that makes it more complicated. This is something that really needs to right itself. Weve seen great news from the housing side, weve seen lots of people still losing their jobs. People losing their jobs are the lowest income cohorts out there and those are the ones that really need the lifeline and i believe very much, particularly in an election year, you will see new money flow to those people and new money flow to the ppp program. We cant keep incentivizing people to stay home and not go to work. I hear from businesses in northeast indiana every day talking about this being the greatest challenge that they have, how do we get employees to come back to work if the federal government is incentivizing them to stay home. So there is a debate within the Republican Party, a larger debate within our country of where do we go from here. Im not giving up on the payroll tax cut. It should be something that should be included. I stand with President Trump on that. I hope we dont back off of that, that debate, and there have been some signs that the administration is still fighting for it. Many House Republicans like myself are fighting for it too. Dagen in terms of the 600 supplemental, the extra 600 per week. Be specific, are you in favor of reducing out of r getting rid of the extra 600. I believe its unhealthy all together. We should eliminate it, should not be included in a future package of. We need to find ways to incentivize americans to go back to work. Thats what will make americas economy healthy again, by reopening the economy, getting america back to work, not to reward people, incentivize people to stay home. Dagen America Needs to be healthy in order to go back to work. Given the rising number of virus cases in some states thats not a possibility. So youre not in favor of giving those people who cant go back to work, their businesses arent open, you see the jump in jobless claims for the week that came out yesterday. Understood, dagen. I have three quarters who are 10 and under. Their generation is going to hold the bag for the 3. 2 trillion weve added to the National Debt already. We cant do more harm to our kids and our grandkids future by growing this National Debt even further. Allie there are two things going on here. The first is that everything that weve been through in the last number of months clearly points to the divide in terms of the lack of progress and sufficiency of our system. We feed to get kids in school. We need to figure this out. The second is from an economic point of view. We talked about the 600 benefit which if it doesnt materialize its going to be a negative surprise to the market. You cannot get working class people back in school back to work and the economy going and unemployment below 11 if you dont have children in schools. So this is one of those issues and its going to continue to highlight a lot of the divide socially, economically and politically, but we have to work towards getting kids back in school for their health and for the health of the economy. Dagen i read a quote in the wall street journal, emily, that said that without education and schools that women particularly, if they have to stay at home without child care, without schools being open of, it will wipe away a generation of gains for women in the workplace. Really astonishing. Emily that is a really good point because we have to think about all of the sort of like tangential or the downstream impacts of Something Like this and women will bear the brunt of it in terms of families and these guidelines are i think really innovative and i think when you look at polling, an ap poll found 50 of the country believes schools should be open with major or minor changes in the fall. We cant comprehend its not just what theyre learning in the classroom. Its tough for kids to learn over zoom. Its also the socialization, being around other children as you learn and grow. I think we cant even understand the impact that closing in the fall would have totally and thats why its so important to find innovative ways to keep the schools open. Dagen we heard from the American Academy of pediatric, the National Academies of science, engineering and medicine weighing in on how important it is for especially children with special needs or kindergarten through third grade to be around kids in classrooms, thats when youre developing skills to regulate behavior, attention, emotions. You couple that with the way our elderly are being isolated in Nursing Homes and hospitals and the dementia and th that resultm that and these are longlasting consequences of how weve chosen to fight the virus. Joining me now, chief Political Correspondent at the Washington Examiner and Fox News Contributor, byron york. Byron, the messaging gets nuttier every day. In chicago where people are being murdered every day they want to defund the police to stop crime . Its so it just makes absolutely no sense. From the very beginning of the most recent attention to this defund the police idea, critics have said, well, what happens if you defund the police and theres a murder or an Armed Robbery or any all sorts of Violent Crimes that take place and proponents of that have never had a good answer. Now, on this portland stuff, seattle stuff, chicago, the guiding principle for federal involvement is some threat to a federal facility. Thats whats going on in portland, are nightly attacks on the hatfield federal courthouse and federal Law Enforcement from the department of Homeland Security are protecting the courthouse. So if you saw something similar in another city like seattle, you would have some more federal intervention. But in cities that have just seen a crime spike like chicago and new york, if there were federal intervention, would not be the same as all, it would be sending more agents, fbi, dea, atf, to do what they already do, which is assisting local Law Enforcement. Dagen that is exactly right, byron. Thats whats happening in chicago. These are agents that are helping with investigative work, say atf using special technology to study ballistics evidence. If its a federal crime being committed, which is a drug crime, if its gang related, chances are its a drug crime. 80 of Gang Activity its drug related. The feds dont need any permission to go into a city to address a drug or racketeering related crimes. These are federal crimes. If theyre charged in federal court they could carry longer sentences. What if in chicago this actually works . Well, weve seen this before. Here again, the important thing to say is federal agents are already in chicago, in new york, in cities around the country, as part of the everyday work supporting local Law Enforcement. Thats whats going on. So if you send more of them, because the problem has gotten worse, that is not a federal takeover. That is not an invasion of the city. That is not a first step toward marshall law which some of the left are talking about these days. Thats none of that. This is a continuation of existing practices and also a realization that things for whatever reason have gotten worse in recent days and need to be address. Dagen you used the phrase martial law.
