So i think what we have is Something Like a truce for next year, it is not a deal, though, it is not like the u. S. You know, some companies were holding job fairs on their factory floors when they announce layoff and bomb barreledded with xet tores wrapped, you know, who were coming in and trying to scoop up workers. So in the past when we have higher unemployment, a layoff could mean six months, 18 months, two year of unemployment and retraining, and dislocation now we have a quote in the story that dislocated workers are a hot comotdty it is a real buffer. You know workers dont have to worry about next paycheck and keep spending with and Consumer Spending holds up and i think thats what were seeing happen right now. It is not the economy stiewpgd but labor market that matters i think thats going to prove pivotal in upcome election and what youre seeing taking place is because of demographic change slower Labor Force Growth is requires less in terms of payroll growth less in terms of employment growth to prevent the Unemployment Rate from rising. So thats whats hat work here. What we used to see is process feed only themselves the economy would slow down companies layoff workers workers cut back spending that hurt profits then more layoffs were not seeing that kind of feeding on itself mechanism yet. I got this sensation it was almost like youre saying if the economy wasnt so strong this area would be really hurt by the Trump Trade War but theyre not because the question reading that is do you think trump would start the trade war with china if there wasnt that strong backstop to pick up those labor the labor that would get lost in the trade war or that was a coincidence that he got . Well i think he was been emboldened by it and made very clear coming into office that he wanted to rewrite trade deals that he fell that u. S. Has been treated unfairy in in naff tap and certainly by the chinese so he was going to do that. But i think hes been emboldened to push it especially hard because you have the stock market doing very well and economy doing well. The policy and tax a cut again it gives a company more wiggle room does it not to not lay people off because again theres that saving so a lot of this is not just kind of so that would put out of nowhere. Is that theres protection with the farm is selling soybeanses to china so thats im talking about other companies. Employers and other thing is those tax cutses that was kind of a 2018 story that tax cuts were aing big boost to economy in 2018 in 2019 pivoted towards trade policy bins of the tax cuts wore off a little bit and the uncertainty from trade hit so there was no doubt in the economy has slowed down. But the point here is that in an environment of very low unemployment we can, we can weather a slowdown in a way that doesnt seriously hurt workers. Why does unemployment why is it staying so low . If the economy is slowing why is this why is that cycle that you described not apparent in this day and age . Because theres so many workers shortages out there in the environment about you mentioned right in a place like wisconsin you know, where there are all kinds of job openings that arent being filled when you lay someone off, theyre going out and filling one of those other job openings. You know we keep talking about how there are more job openings than there are people who are unemployed. So you can manage this slowdown without getting that selffeeding process where someone get laid off. Stop spending money it hurts corporate profits companies layoff even more people. You know were seeing stop to that. Now, i think that president and advisors understand if they kept push this trade war really hardd selffeeding process and doesnt want that in 2020 but doing a truce and lets just hold office on escalating this anymore with the chinese. Were probably going to get, you know, more agricultural purchases from china. But the big issue havent been resolved are problem with china is a long run issue that you know were just kind of going for a little while. John great article. Sm housing doing better because of lower mortgage yield we see some improvement and housing stumble i think ten year treasury yield will move lower in response. But what is interest what a difference a year make but lets what happened last year so fed came in beginning of october said were far from neutral meaning that were probably going to raise rates okay. The market went okay. This year we have 3 cuts. I dont think i think theres too much money in the world and theres so many investments that are decent and you see absurd did i with too many billion available and it is worse in fix income and save thing as retiree that has a 100 stock and buy debt with borrowing going on it is begin to drive rates perm pangtly below rate of inflation with too much demanding relative to supply. And until theres default and money is gone like money was destroyed we never really had that play out fully in 08 save with low rate but ultimately wealth has to disappear for the demand supply ams to lead to positive real return unsafe assets again. You have a very healthy labor market, were going to do better this year, of course, in terms of holiday sales compared to last years disappointments. One of the reasons is unlike december 2018, were not going to be burdened by that declining stock market and its negative effect that it had on Consumer Confidence and sentiment as well as holiday cheer. Dagen still low gas prices, rock bottom mortgage rates, rock bottom Interest Rates, all those dont translate into Credit Card Debt. But then unemployment, so many job openings that even if something bad happens, you can turn around and get a job. Thats right. The outlook is still positive. Consumer spending will grow, and eventually Consumer Spending, i think, is going to lead other types of Business Sales, if you like, Capital Equipment and what not higher, and thats going to extend this already record long economic recovery. Wages growing faster than inflation, we have basically full employment. And i think at the end of the day the consumer is way more jazzed up than Consumer Sentiment and confidence surveys would suggest. When you actually see a what the consumers doing, its way more robust. When they do a survey, maybe theyre half full half empty, but when they spend,theyre half full. We dont have any signs of speculative excess in the household sec is to have as we did in 2007 and 2008 with the problems with housing. Theres plenty of room for Consumer Spending to grow, thats a positive for the economy, a positive for the markets. Again, i think the consumer and the whole world is so tweaked on to assets declining, which is why last year was bad. I think consumers know when stocks go down, consumer things go bad. The president talked about the market being hot. Youre not getting fired. Whether youve got a lot of money in the or not, it is asset bubble or not and even consumers know it. Dagen its sort of like the regular folks use gasoline prices as a really important inflation gauge even though it might be a small percentage of what they spend every month, every week, every month. And to the same point, the stock market does matter because, again, if its very rocky, people do look at their 401 k s, and they do Pay Attention to whats going on in stocks. Theyve got it on their phone 24 7. They can just look and you know, jonas is exactly right. Its one thing to have declining profitability, which has been the case in 2019. Its an entirely different matter if you also have a declining stock market along with declining profitability. So Business Leaders, when they see their share prices are doing better, have less of a reason to go ahead and cut back on staff. And as long as most Business Leaders keep up payrolls where they are if not grow them, the economys going to be in pretty good shape. Dagen so, shoppers beware, even dodging weather or crowds, but cautious of fivestar reviews. A new wall street journal article showcases a thoroughly modern problem, fake fivestar product reviews led by robots meant to persuade consumers and drive sales. Im fascinated with this story, because the article actually says that a full onethird of Online Reviews on major web sites this is amazon, walmart and sep health care sephora, are fake. And theres these algorithms to be identified. What i dont understand is why the amazons of this world dont have their own to weed this out. Well, they would say they do. Actually, im surprised this article took 20 years to write, because this has been an increasing problem. Its literally not just the ratings on amazon and walmart and all these sites. Its the whole Influencer Marketing thing on instagram, it is fake review sites that are like sites that people think are real. It is scams. The ftc its are hard to stop, and the problem is consumers no longer want to pay for reviews. Thirty years ago you got your Movie Reviews from a Magazine Article or consumer reports, right. And now that business is dead because you want everything for free, but the free reviews are bogus whether its yelp or food, its all junk. And its hard to stop because a legitimate businessman cant do legit because hell have a threestar review, which is legitimately good, but the crooks have a four and a half dagen weve got to run, but i take issue with amazon where you google something i mean, you put in their search and something specific, my brand name that you want to buy, and you get results of a bunch of garbage that amazon is being paid to promoment amazon gets paid to promote these products.
