Governments relenting to the shut down with a shortterm funding deal. Mitch mcconnell praised the decision yesterday. After three days of an unnecessary lapse in funding, a bipartisan majority has brought the Democratic Leaders extraordinary filibuster to an end and pass the bipartisan deal to reopen the federal government. As i said repeatedly over the past week, shutting down the government isnt irresponsible way to do business. Markets rally on deal. The dow, nasdaq, s p 500 all closing record territories. I spoke with Steve Schwartzman about the new trade policy early this morning. China has very substantial trade deficit on the u. S. Side in his 250, 400 billion. That relationship over time has to be changed. Is ceo of nasdaq on the panel. Well be breaking down the tear from International Trade. Meanwhile, earnings and focus on wall street today. A big chunk of earnings, Johnson Johnson, a few to report before the opening bell this morning to tell you what the stocks are doing. It was a stream come true for investors. Netflix reported fourthquarter earnings yesterday. Subscribers brought expectations of major milestone for the media giant in all of its streaming this morning at 9 . On the heels of the tax code overhaul which nasdaq president and ceo weighed in on earlier here in dallas during the panel. Listen. You can see the markets have react quick weight and they were previewing it before the tax law came into effect. The impact on companies is very positive for the most part in it hopefully will use the money to both provide benefits to the shareholders as well as investment in businesses, which would then drive more interest and demand for employment, which then creates the cycle again of where you find the people, how do you make sure you are able to track the right balance. It is definitely a growth driver for the United States. Maria right now in the flesh, the president and ceo of nasdaq, india friedman. Good to see you. Great to be here. Whether it continues, europe purdue bullish. We see a lot of continued growth in the United States and elsewhere in the world. This economic backdrop that is carrying towards 2018. The reason i think i will continue. Were talking about christine the card raising expectations for this year, next year, going in to 2019. Does that mean bigger business for nasdaq, more listings, mark to be from your standpoint in the Capital Market . Economic talent is a great actor up to go through. In terms of having Companies Interested in going public, a lot of companies in the pipeline, almost 100 is filed and are looking to go down the road of going public. Just a matter of creating a nice economic actor up in the market at ground that makes them feel like its an inviting place to be. We see a lot of Companies Getting themselves ready at this stage. Maria here we are one of the more national forums. Youre talking driven across the world. You expecting anyone to be more than anyone away from the u. S. . Important piece of business. We operate in over 20 countries around the world in terms of not only our own market, but the technology we provide to other markets around the world and weve seen very good demand drivers across our businesses where people are looking to advance technology, and their markets and certainly in terms of companies coming to markets come increasing demand in asia as well as europe. Maria you mentioned technology. This is an area you focused on whether or not through acquisitions and growth. Tell me how thats part of the growth story. Sure, we really are the only Exchange Operator that has a Significant Technology to other markets around the world. Trading systems, Clearing Systems analytics that help from the markets. A lot of demand for increasing recitation thats been a great growth driver. Market transparency is the other part of the business we see driving and not just coming off the market and how do you get intelligence can help navigate the Capital Market. Maria what does that mean for pricing . Also value added. The deeper we get into the partnership, the more symbiotic relationship that accrues tour benefit. Turning data makes it more valuable. To drive more valuable. What can you tell us as you get bigger in the choir related company . Deregulatory backdrop is very clear. We operate in a world where the u. S. Equities business has very clear rules of engagement and making sure the data is available to everyone who wants it and making sure all of our fears are regulated and approved by the fcc. We have a very established ecosystem for data appeared in terms of the analytics and other things we can do in that context we are competing with other data providers to find the intelligence we can deliver to the market. Maria breadwinning income is ceo weighed in on the panel this morning. Everybody predicts to grow yearoveryear, specially the United States to go to faster pace and regulatory reform. The real question is what is going to stop consumers in the United States from spending their confidence is up and spending levels are touching 4 in the u. S. And lows, 20, 30, 40 year lows in various places. That is what is going to drive it. I feel like, if Adena Friedman come your thoughts on what you just heard on Interest Rates in which pressure will be the topics du jour but the good economy, strengthening for expectations in some point you hope to see which is go higher, but that will mean higher Interest Rates and does that work to snap this incredible run we had . First of all, the government will be very, very cautious and careful in how they manage Interest Rate as they are seeing the growth becoming more and more sustainable over time. We are writing ourselves into a steady growth phase. We obviously hope from a tax reform makes the United States more competitive which drives even more growth. The government is very aware of the need to be studied with the approach to Interest Rates on the back of that. You do hope this alternately accrues the benefit of workers and consumers as they have more money to spend. Maria its almost for good reason that Interest Rates are going out. Maybe markets wont get so disrupted because thats what you want to see. At the end of the day its ultralow interest environment for many years. The idea we can so they get a more normalized it is good for the overall longterm growth specifically if you continuing this growth trend. Maria what is your take in terms of trade. A tribe administration putting in these new tariffs on asian countries, washing machines from south korea and solar panels from china. Personally, we need to make sure we live in a competitive world and its a Global Economy and global dynamic. Making sure we open ourselves up to trade in both directions, trying to make it as fair as possible is one of the goals of the government. The ability to trade is a huge driver of growth in the American Economy to allow for around companies export and to allow for the free flow of goods in general. You wonder if this is good good for something new. Bitcoin honestly. Youre planning on launching bitcoin futures. We are still in the mud of exploring that. Weve been talking with client and want to make sure if we choose to enter the market in terms of providing billing number one have client demands a have client demand for number two that we put the right Risk Management protocols in place to make it so people feel confident in what we are providing and how that becomes an investable product. We are still in the exploratory phase of working with clients. Maria there is a real debate. Block chaining crypto currencies are very Different Things. The block chaining is a Foundational Technology we see as having the great promise to create more efficiency and global trade. Maria we will leave it there. Thanks for that. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis had both. And that turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. The stock up about, as you can see a. 7 in the premarket and as you are in davos this morning, and the International Subscriber growth is really up the charts for netflix. Maria well, it is pretty incredible. Netflix continues to do well. You know, it is one of the reasons that you are seeing these media deals happen. It is one of the reasons probably you saw fox and disney do their recent deal because folks like netflix and amazon are paying billions in content and really taking market share. I looked at the content numbers this morning from one netflix used to pay for content. In 2013 and i was 2 billion in this year as high as 8 billion. They are investing in original content. Cheryl talked about Stranger Things in the crown is still popular. A big boost for on demand program because people are willing to pay a couple extra bucks a month for it, especially if youre solid content content, which they obviously do. Maria i personally love the crown and have been getting into that lately. We both love the show as well. Maria will take a break here from davos on the world stage as President Trump gears up later this week. Geared at each of the companies i will be talking with nissan to be Shia Alliance chairman carlos gone on his thoughts on trade policy as well as the sector. An awardwinning career, neil diamond retiring because of the Devastating Health diagnosis. We will tell you about god. Stay here with us live. Oh good, youre awake finally. Youre still here . Leaders around the globe gathered for the World Economic forum and we will be broadcasting throughout the week. Our first hint of what we can expect from the speech of the form later this week. Yesterday the tribe administration announced new tariffs on solar panels and washing machines and primarily asian manufacturers. I spoke with chairman e. Obrien moynihan about the latest round of America First policies later today. You know, the United States trying to make itself a bit more competitive from a tax rate for regulatory framers that had a workforce, energy, substantial energy resources. As that changes, the dynamic will reverberate a bit in the world. There is an attitude about here for the administration, free trade, fair trade, but that is a subtle but real question which is the balance treating a little bit. Trendy joining me now is the chairman and ceo of ms. Sonia to be Shia Alliance, carlos go on. Good to see you. Great to see you here in davos. You and i had conversations about trade in the past with lawmakers selling goods in the u. S. What you think when you see these tariffs . Well, i think it is not something major in my opinion. We are talking about relatively minor items. We are not talking about major. I think 2018 is not going to see anything significant because the economy is doing well. So everybody has interest. Corrections need to hop in and there will be some corrections, but im not acting anything major. Maria what about the response . Are you expecting a response from china . I dont thing so. Obviously we are talking about nafta, very important for all calm or occurs and what will be the of the negotiations. The fact after 23, 24 years of an established agreement, we want another look because its different of the three economies are different. The outcome is very important for us, but not enforcing the outcome. Maria this discussion on nafta is beginning. This week coming next week, will come to ahead in 2018 as the leading ceo, your companies, they are the largest automaker in the world right now in 17. What are you wanting to see . Would you want to see from these discussions . We want to see visibility and something that will show us the next 10 to 20 years. If you are in a situation where you know that you may change but you dont know what will happen because this is simple investments. The fact you are going to review this agreement, fine. Lets set one for all the rules that will allow us to invest, organize herself. Maria for you its about certainty. It doesnt necessarily mean it could be more expensive for you. It can be more expensive for us some of the carmakers because we are in the same situation. It wont get more or less competitive. We need to know what are the rules so we can organize ourselves. Maria gave me the state of the business right now. You put together this incredible alliance. Congratulations. Nissans Cross Alliance with renault, this International LifeSuccess Story. This is the Success Story in the auto. Owning 43. 4 of nissan paid of nissan. His son owns 50 . The 73 of the russian automaker and then nissan holds a controlling 34 amid to be shia voters. What does this do for you . In a certain way, the alliance and the autonomy of other companies. But at the same time, we worked together where it matters on technology, platforms. We biked together, but we need all of the companies to manage their own brand. It gives us a little bit the scale of one Large Company at the same time the gdp of a lot of companies. Maria what you see in terms of business . I see a great market. Practically all the markets going up with the exception maybe of the u. K. Depending what will happen in brexit. The United States particularly with the latest decision on the fixed all decisions will be positive tailwind. Japan is going to do better coming here better. China and india will continue on their trend. So im expecting another record for the industry. Maria ive got to get your take on what changes does, what turns this around. You were at ces, which is interesting to see a leading automaker had a Consumer Technology show, but not so different today because everything in your car is technology. You are at the auto show. That is all particularly on technology. Howard is based on intelligence and how it will change the car. In the next five years going to see more electric cars, more connected cars, more autonomous cars, everything will have been. This is not 1015 cars on the road. They will be the breaks. And they will determine how the car will change. The emerging market . To breaks in the sense of the small modules. It will change the car. Maria vacuuming two things here that its a nissan is laying the groundwork for nissan cars. Best ever spoke about Autonomous Vehicles. You think people will be driving south driving . You are driving. You are sitting yeah, you will be buying more autonomous cars. I want to drive the car when i decide and i want to describe the drive me. They have a lot of commercial stakes behind lowering the cost of mobility. So all of these technology are outlining up. You will have a mix of technology on the market and i dont think the market is going to go one way but its going to diversify the offer. Maria are you worried with all of the fleets, because of uber, they are buying fleets, fewer cars on the road . I dont think so. If i were not seeing it today, even though we have been told that young people in cities are not buying cars, which is true, you have to look at the whole market, at the same time that you have kind of stability of the car market in the United States or in europe, in the big urban concentration, you have booming car sales, sales going on. Maria real quick, before you go, carlos, a perfect situation synchronize Global Growth, what changes this . What may change this is all of a sudden unexpected conflict somewhere that could scare the market or when i say conflict, it can be a war somewhere or conflict inside a country. Maria like a trade situation. Trade situation, budget situation. Maria these are unforeseen. Carlos, pleasure to you see. Carlos ghosn there. Reports from Johnson Johnson among others. We will see how the pharmaceuticals are affecting that market. Plus cheers bacardi acquiring patron tequila. The details next. They came out of nowhere, sir how many of em . We dont know. Dozens. All right lets teach these freaks some manners good luck out there, captain thanks but i dont need luck, i have skills. I dont have my keys. on intercom all hands. We are looking for the captains keys again. They are on a silver carabiner. Oh, this is bad. As long as people misplace their keys, you can count on geico saving folks money. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. A trip back to the dthe doctors office, mean just for a shot. But why go back there, when you can stay home with Neulasta Onpro . Strong chemo can put you at risk of serious infection. Neulasta helps reduce infection risk by boosting your white blood cell count, which strengthens your immune system. In a key study, neulasta reduced the risk of infection from 17 to 1 , a 94 decrease. Applied the day of chemo, Neulasta Onpro is designed to deliver neulasta the next day. Neulasta is for certain Cancer Patients receiving strong chemotherapy. Do not take neulasta if youre allergic to neulasta or Neupogen Filgrastim . Ruptured spleen, sometimes fatal as well as serious lung problems, allergic reactions, kidney injuries, and capillary leak syndrome have occurred. Report abdominal or shoulder tip pain, trouble breathing or allergic reactions to your doctor right away. In patients with sickle cell disorders, serious, sometimes fatal crises can occur. The most common side effect is bone and muscle ache. So why go back there . If youd rather be home, ask your doctor about Neulasta Onpro. Here again Maria Bartiromo with a special edition of mornings with maria live with davos switzerland. Maria welcome back, tuesday 23rd, top stories right now 6 35 on the east coast. 7. 9 magnitude earthquake triggering a tsunami along u. S. Coast. New warning coming up. The strength of the u. S. Economy main topic here at the World Economic form, synchronized growth, main issues getting people back to work especially given the Significant Impact technology is having. Its absolutely most best performing system in the world and thats an additional factor but traditional ones, who could have thought facebook 15 years ago, every job destroyed by technology, now 2. 4 jobs created. Additional growth later is whats going to pay the tax system. Maria more on how companies are adapting to analling work and technology. Maria also once again in record unchartered territory. Futures showing more gains at the start of trading, take a look at whats going on ahead of the open. Dow jones industrial average reversing all of the gains and then some, negative by 15 points. Nasdaq and s p 500 also turning negative. We will check out whats going on, dow components, one of the issues, john jon and johnson, proctor and gamble. In europe gains across the board, look what happened there as well, we are seeing the market give up earlier with the ft up 2 minutes and Vice President pence to visit the western wall. More details of his visit coming up. Getting in m a spirit. We have the details on 5. 1 billion deal. Two Companies Getting together in a merger, plus shocking news out of the music world, neil diamond retires after being diagnosed with parkinsons disease. Top story this half an hour and thats baby boomers and the economic boom. Older workers are remaining in the workforce long e and contributing more. According to aarp, americans 50 years and older generate 7. 6 trillion in annual activity. Aarp ceo joanne jenkins. Thank you so much for joining us. How would you characterize things right now . I think we are seeing particularly in the u. S. And also around the world the need that Older Workers are staying in the workplace longer and that is as you said people over the age of 50 in the u. S. Spend 51 cents of every dollar spent in the u. S. , accounts for more than 7. 6 in economic activity. Huge Market Segment that i think Many Companies are overlooking and yet these are the ones who are actually saying in the workplace and they are also contributing large amount to economy. These are really interesting issues that we are looking at. Here we are looking at very low unemployment rate. We have robotics taking over jobs, people are worried that technology will replace them and then you have a group of people who are experienced, who have been in the workforce, staying there for longer as they age and live longer, thats another thing that we have to play into here, the fact that we are living longer. Well, we are certainly seeing that people are living longer and contributing to the workplace, people over age of 50 trying to continue to work well into 60s and 70s in some cases, what we are seeing now four generations in the workplace at one time. How do we bring together those generations to make sure we are getting the best out of this in the battle for talent. We have relatively great unemployment rates but also segments of society like in health care and education that there is this huge need for unrepresentation in the employment in the workforce. So we are hoping that companies will continue to focus not only on Young Workers but Older Workers and not be putting them against each other but seeing the value of that experience coming into workplace that is creates a different kind of culture. Maria well, you would think so. Labor and longevity, 40 of retirees Life Expectancy of five years. We will be talking about higher wages, Interest Rates moving higher because we have a Strong Economy but that, of course, will lead to a tired labor market. I dont think we are seeing higher wages. Older workers want Different Things than other workers particularly after you spent lifetime of your career in a field, i think what we are seeing, particularly at aarp that we are doing retirement, part time jobs that allow people to work at home and the flexibility and really finding work that has purpose and meaning is sometimes more important than the amount of money that they are being paid to do that. So we are testing a whole host of those kind of principals at aarp. We offered caregiving leave to employees which is a major issue. We know that almost one in five people in the u. S. Will be a caregiver at some point in their life, either wanting needing to be caregiver or someone to care for them. So employment in that sector is something thats going to be a huge opportunity for people who want to stay in the workforce. Maria well, you also have those people who they call the sandwich, caring for their kids and care for parents. They are caregivers. Let me ask you about technology. The Trump Administration has been putting emphasis on job training, dedicating week to Workforce Development back in june. As we look at technology and robotics having a bigger place in the workforce, do you expect that we are going to see job training so that we understand what the skill sets are that are required to thrive in this new economy . I absolutely think so. I no that Many Companies around the country are already doing that. Maria private sector to do that or a government thing . Well, i think its both. We run a couple of unemployment programs that brings Older Workers back to workplace and placing them in positions that are working in nonprofit organizations across the country. A lot of retraining is use of technology. We are seeing growing trend people over 50 using technology and its different than what most people expect. As you were talking earlier that we are even retraining how we train our people who use our Drivers Safety Program and how do we use technology and cars because you were talking about the autonomous car. How do we prepare this generation of people to understand the use of technology and the power that it gives them around taking care of themselves. Maria good to see you. We will be watching. Very exciting what you are talking about. Joanne jenkins, ceo of aarp, we will see you, thank you so much. Vice president mike pence visiting the western wall, cheryl with all the details, cheryl. Cheryl thats right, maria, coming at tensions with the palestinians continue to rise. Palestinians strongly criticizing the u. S. After the Trump Administrations decision to recognize jerusalem as israels capital. Yesterday the Vice President announced that the u. S. Will speed up the timing of the opening of the embassy in jerusalem. He al said that the white house plans to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Deal unless it is amended. Well, bacardi is lining up a shot of tequila. Im the one clocking in when youre clocking out. Sensing and automatically adjusting to your every move. Does your bed do that . Im the new sleep number 360 smart bed. Lets meet at a sleep number store. If we destroyed technology now 2. 4 jobs created. Not in the shortterm but medium term and its something, dynamic way, actional growth later is whats going to pay the tax system to balance your budget. Maria that was credit swiss ceo, talk about massive Impact Technology is having on workforce in foreseeable future. Joining us right now Cas Technology mike, mike, good to see you. Good to see you. Maria technology is having incredible impact in every industry. Where are you seeing biggest usages at ca . Every Company Wants to become a software company. They are building software, they need tools to build software, they need tools to manage the software. Way we build software today is considerably different five to ten years ago. Those two groups have kind of merged together in whats called devopts. In todays day and age if youre not updating, youre putting your company at risk. Maria Jay Jamie Dimon are spending and companies have to suck it up and pay for, what are you seeing out there . I cant see a board of directors thats not getting threats, its going to get operational funding, Board Members are very aware of the threat that are happening to all companies, now, i do think that over time as we start sharing information and the opportunity to share information globally and the Publicprivate Partnership with cybersecurity starts to get better, we might see easing on that but in the shortterm, we are all hands on deck making sure that we protect our assets. Maria whats your take on regulation right now, it seems that this administration has rolled back a number of regulations for a number of industries but when it comes to technology, they are looking at an industry thats more powerful than ever before because of what you just said data, and all of the information that Technology Companies have on american citizens, do you expect more regulation in the tech sector . I think you will see more regulation and all of us have to participate in may with gdpr, with the european standard for Data Protection for private citizens, so thats a starting point, thats going to be a benchmark for how the rest of the world takes a look at data, you will see further iterations, so i dont see that slowing down. Some of it if its done smart and done in cooperation with companies i think will be net beneficial, i think if its not done dynamically where you understand this is a constantly moving target, i think you will see less thoughtful regulation. Maria does the growth of ca come organically in the next three years or will you do acquisition . We will do both. We are a company that has a lot of cash on balance sheet, we have core capability in doing acquisitions and to the extent that you can get companies that fit your culture and fit your strategic road map, i think you do a valued to shareholders to do acquisition. Definitely, we were 35 taxpayer going down to 21, we will see net benefits from that. Maria anything for employees as a result of . What we are going to do is invest back in business which means creating jobs and creating careers and making sure we invest in new technology that people want to buy 3 to 4 years from now. Maria mike joining us there. Live from davos, switzerland at the Economic Forum here is Maria Bartiromo with the special edition with mornings with maria maria welcome back and good tuesday morning, everybody, im Maria Bartiromo, it is tuesday january 23rd in beautiful davos, switzerland, top stories right now 7 00 a. M. On the east coast. Breaking news off the coast of alaska to report, 7. 9 magnitude earthquake triggering a tsunami banger along entire u. S. West coast. New alert for residents across the coast coming up this morning right here. Government is back open for business, democrats relented yesterday agreeing to end the shutdown with a shortterm funding deal. Three weeks. Its a shame, mr. President , that the American People and the senate have had to endure such fingerpointing to secure guaranty that we will finally move address this urgent issue. It is something the majority could have avoided entirely, concern the president could have avoided if he were only willing to take yes for an answer. Maria markets rallied on news of the deal to end the shutdown, dow, nasdaq, s p 500 all closed in record territory yesterday, take a look, 143 points yesterday, half a percent. Nasdaq up 72, almost 1er, earnings are streaming out, travelers beating expectation checking the tape after johnson and johnson did the same about ten minutes ago. Futures this morning a mix, take a look, reversed course, all the major indices are a mix. The momentum looks to be continuing there, but the nasdaq holding onto 2point move to upside. S p 500 has turned negative. In Europe Markets are also mixed. Here you too are seeing giving up major rally, dax index in germany twothirds of 1er. 78 points higher on the dax index. Putting America First, President Trump announcing a new round of tariffs on solar panels and washing machines to keep the u. S. Competitive on the International Stage he says, i spoke with nasdaq ceo about trade policy in the last hour of the program. We need to make sure that we are living in a competitive world an it is a Global Economy and its a global dynamic, making sure that we have we open ourselves up to both trade in both directions and trying to make it as safe as possible and dont block from our ability to trade, a huge driver of growth in the American Economy. Maria we break down the impact of new tariffs on International Trade this morning coming up. We hear from carlos ghosn ahead of nafta negotiation. Earnings, travelers hitting the tape moments ago, above expectations, renew was also better than expectations, as you can see, the stock is up 1 . The king of beer is losing its crown, budweiser. Nfl accused of not standing for the nations hero, the league is refuse to go ran an antiprotest ad during the super bowl. We will get into that coming up. Coming up this morning, joining the conversation chief operating officer of paypal and the ceo of delyo, north ireland chairman glen hitchins and Princeton University president , Christopher Eisgruber will join me. First we want to go to top story right here, President Trump signing shortterm deal to end threeday deadlock, Sarah Huckabee sanders painted win for president and lose for Senate Minority leader. 8118, i would say that those numbers are much more in the president s favor than in senator schumers favor. Im not sure what changed for him and what he gained. Maria joining me right now from the white house to weigh in special assistant to President Trump kelly sadler, good to have you on the program. Thanks for having me, maria. Maria are we going to be back in the same position on february 8th, are we going live week to week like to . Well, the president has been very clear with his immigration principals and we have been making very well Good Progress in putting together a deal and feel optimistic about it. Basically the president wants to see, you know, four things, he wants a permanent daca fix but he also wants Border Security and that includes a physical border wall, he additional wants to end chain migration, which means immigrant bringing all the brothers, sisters, relatives and extended family as well as end to visa diversity lottery system which basically omits 35 people a year to the country completely at random. We want to go to a meritbase solution. Maria those are practical ideas and i assume that the democrats wanted that as well and yet they still staged this whole big thing and a shutdown and by the way, the markets didnt flinch about it. What was it that turned . How did you actually end upcoming to a deal, congress, how did that happen . Well, i think that the minority leader badly miscalculated. Basically he held hostage 327 taxpaying americans and he found out quickly that that was not popular with the american public. Harvard poll came out 58 of people disapproved a shutting down oh government to try to put force us to negotiate immigration reform. It was a bad miscalculation on his part and i think he realized it when he gotten senators that represent where president won handily, missouri, West Virginia that he didnt have the votes to sustain this much further. Maria were you referring to the population of america 327 million . Yes, yes. Maria kelly, let me switch gears, new tariffs on solar panels and washing machine that is the president has institute yesterday following recommendations from the u. S. International trade commission, whirlpool chairman is applauding the move but the founder of solar panels, tariffs will be shooting ourselves in a foot. Is this a beginning of new round of tariffs coming out of the u. S. . You are seeing the president s America First agenda put to place here. He was vocal on the campaign trail about hes for free and open trade but that trade needs to be fair and reciprocal. What you see with the trade actions was that back in june the uscr opened an investigation basically looking at the washer situation, what lg and samsung were doing and they determined and brought a recommendation to the president that they, indeed, were caught in antidumping clauses, they were overmanufacturing mexico, they moved plants to china and then to vietnam and unfair to whirlpool. We immediately saw lg and samsung announce they are building new plants in america, new manufacturing plants in america and we welcome that and we also saw with whirlpool yesterday announcing 200 new jobs in ohio facility and we expect more investment from them to come. This president is proamerican and proamerican companies, he will do everything he can to strengthen in global stage. Maria yeah, but people are worried that this is going to lead to bigger things in terms of a trade war, what do you want to say to people who are worried about that and where this goes next, understanding that its the America First strategy . Well, this president is driven by economic success. Look at where hes taken and look at where the policies have taken us so far, weve had the dow cross 26,000, we have unemployment at a record 17year low. We have got all of these companies now investing in their workers by giving them bonuses or raising their wages because of the historic tax reform that he enacted last month. All of the policies that hes enacting are revitalizing this economy and sending it to new heights and hes very cognizant of those accomplishments and this is something that we will be carrying forward in the future. Only good things to come for america. Maria yeah, we are waiting on what we should expect from nafta, when are you expecting the president to start making news there . I think with a Government Shutdown, we are now we are negotiating and we know that the ambassador is, you know, the looking at the discussions, i think that in the bring in the month of may you will see Real Movement on that front. Maria all right. All right, we will keep watching that. Kelly, let me ask you this, the president is going to be coming to davos to deliver speech, what can we expect from the president . Announce progrowth strategies on the world stage, listen, ive gone through the stats of how great this economy and how great it is under the president , hes going talk about regulations and how, you know, we slashed 22 regulations for everyone acted and how that along with tax reform and, you know, free and open but fair and reciprocal trade mart. And that we are open for business, but we you know, we are taking numbers and this trade deficit with china, 30 billiondollar trade deficit with china, we are going take action on that. Maria are you expecting a response from china on the tariffs on the solar panels . You know, i dont i dont know. The chinese government, i think the foreign minister has made some remarks on that. And that is fine. I think the president president xi knows exactly where the president is coming from and they have good and open dialogue. Maria kelly, good to have you on the program, thank you so much. Thank you, maria. Maria President Trump tweeted about the fbi story that we continue to follow and we will have the very latest on that when we come back. Also ahead verizon reporting Quarterly Earnings with mixed results, we will break down the numbers ahead. Big business of beer, butt budweiser is falling out with americans, stay with us. Facebook executive admitting that its platform may not be good for democracy. In a series of blog posts that facebook can amplify both the good and the bad aspect of people. Here is a quote, at its best it allows us to expression ourself and take action and worse, allows people to express misinformation. While facebook plans to fix on misinformation, murdoch thinks they should pay, chairman, released a statement, here is what he writes, the publishers are enhancing the value and integrity of facebook through news and content that are not being adequately rewarded for those services. Here is a look at facebook shares, the stock up nearly 43 over the last year, 21st century fox shares up nearly 22 over that time, maria, mr. Murdoch making intriguing point here that trusted news should be paid for news. Maria yeah, i think he make it is right point. I mean, after all, what are they doing, they are reporting on content from others. Cheryl fake news. Maria are Rubert Murdoch makese right reaction. They need the content. The biggest question Going Forward after the move is whether other media competent executives will follow the lead on this and everybody teams up and says, listen, we are providing, to cheryls point the real news to counteryour quote, unquote, fake news, this has been boiling up for a while. Facebook in particularly but other providers of google and other Technology Companies have had this kind of frienamie relationship, they like to get the company but not paying for it. Will other Companies Follow is the question . Maria how are we going trust what the ratings are . Cheryl thats up to facebook, maria. Thats going to be the owner, its on them. They are under fire for russian look at what happened with twitter and those fake accounts from russia. I mean, they are losing market share. Maria they are going to be watched closely in terms of how these ratings are developed, connell. Yes, yes, and i think, maybe you have its early but maybe you have some sort of stream on one side with quote, unquote, content and youre getting a feed on what your friends are putting up there and they are separated, the what shall arbiter of that is the question. Maria who is the judge of whats trusted . Well, the platform if we are only talking about facebook, the platform would be facebook, do they make that decision and then as soon as they do, if they do theoretically they will hit so hard by people saying why did you pick x and not y, is it because you dont agree with politics. Its a can of worms thats down the line. Maria thats what im saying. Its interesting one to watch. Maria we will be watching it for sure. Actually, Rupert Murdoch said he would be watching it. Maria all right that was the president and ceo of nasdaq, Adina Freeman on outlook of bitcoin, sitting slightly low this morning. Bill, its good to have you, thanks so much for weighing in here. It appears that when youre talking about mobile payment, your perfect to talk about bitcoin. Sure. Maria do you like bitcoin, is this part of your strategy . Well, i mean, for me as engineer by background, you know, the Chain Technology of bitcoin is fundamental breakthrough in Computer Science, tremendous longterm opportunity for the block Chain Technology, what youre seeing a lot of people still thinking about it from a currency perspective and maybe speculating on that. I think its still very early days for the commerce applications of bitcoin and crypto currency. I think theres a lot of tremendous potential there in the longterm beyond the currency aspect and what people tend to focus on. Maria we dont know which crypto currency will end up winning the day but you are a believer in block chain . Absolutely believer in block chain. With crypto currency, the fact that there are multiple speaks to how much the Underlying Technology is more important than any one of the currencies necessarily so the Underlying Technology of block chain which ends to sort of move across the different crypto currencies is the thing that most people are or many people are focused on and multiple currencies avenue of the importance of Underlying Technology more than any one of the currencies. Maria i think the block Chain Technology is basically telling us that you can trust the person on the other side of the transaction, right . But you could use dollars with that, why do i need crypto currency for that . The breakthrough of block chain has really notion of distributed trust and i think the bigger basic through is going to happen when people apply block train to use cases that could only be solved, places where theres brokerage of trust may not be if right first early application, you know, it takes seven minutes or so to settle block chain versus, trading dollars, euros, you can do in mili second and breakthrough and people use of cases that can be solved through distributed trust. Maria lets switch gears and talk about business today, what are you seeing, bill, mobile Payment Systems are driving Business Growth really across the country and youve been at the forefront of developing some of the most important technologies in your sector, how is business right now, what can you tell us about Global Commerce . One of the most important things in Global Commerce is the move to mobile, consumers have clearly chosen mobile as their primary computing device, consumers are spending more time mobile than any place else and thats presented tremendous new opportunities, we do 40 billion plus of mobile volume in q3 alone, the last quarter reported, its tremendous opportunity, its where consumers are spending less time. At the same time the benefits of mobile have not been evenly distributed. You see it happening in retail sector, financial, you have some of the largest players who benefited tremendous and the broader retail segment are trying to figure out how to connect with consumers on mobile, so we are really focused on saying, how do we go demmocatized. Maria and different generations view different ones, what is the future hold for venmo . Sure, i joined venmo and what we have done is expand it persontoperson payment. We started making it that venmo is used where paypal is accepted. A lot of commerce activities which we saw were already happening. You can see in public news feed that people were splitting a lot of transactions, purchasing a great sort of ecommerce and mobile commerce sites already and purchase wherever paypal is accepted. 2 million plus merchants that are able to accept venmo and attract Millennial Consumer base. Maria the partnerships that it has with uber, air bnb, these are important in terms of the partnerships, is that what drive it is growth at brain tree . We are one of the first mobile payment platforms out there which is why most big early winners in mobile, uber, airbnb built on platform, we are one of the first movers in that space, we innovate along the companies and you see us doing that, in paypal, facebook, google, many others, what we are doing to enable commerce not just a seemless buying experience but us connecting 200 consumers around the world, mobile device, social content, virtual reality, these are at different stages of development. But across any of those we are providing seemless acts for consumers to engage in commerce experience. Maria real quick before you go, are you expecting a big regulatory hand in tech sector . We are 200 plus markets around the world and heavilyregulated space, we worked around the world to engage with government and we think theres a lot of, you know, great sort of, you know, upward trend in terms of what you can do to go democatize access and thats interest that most governments around the world have, we have ground great ways to engage constructively pretty much everywhere around the world but we work close with local governments. Maria youre not worried about Trump Administration putting more regulation for tech . Its part and parcel. Maria youve lived with it. Regulation tends to go protect customers and we want to protect customers as well. Thats why we work so well with governments, we thats what customers know us for, is to make it very safe, secure and easy for them to trance act and so protecting customers at the core of business, regulation tends to be in that direction, protect customers, we have aligned interest. Maria we are all worried about hacking and the like. Bill, good to see you, thanks for joining me. Bill ready there, the ceo of paypal, coming up a new strategy for proctor gamble, combating teens for participating in dangerous tie pod challenge trend, thats coming up. The king of beer is losing its crown. Why americans are choosing other beers before budweiser, stay with us. S. Economy tax cuts urge fair trade stress America First agenda at the World Economic forum this week President Trump rb first u. S. President to attend this World Economic forum since year 2000 joining me right now, here, in davos, is the wall street journal editor in chief jerry baker great to see you. Thanks for having me. Thank you so much for joining us this morning, obviously, this is a big deal, the President Trump is coming, got a good story to tell, certainly as relates to economic agenda. I think, this is a very unusual meeting, right . This is global elite people responsible for the globalization, in a lot of people in america and other countries in the world are unhappy with donald trump coming here, right into earth that of global elite a little bit like tom brady walking into a bar full of Philadelphia Eagles fans we can expect that kind of row reception, you cant, actually you are absolutely right going to come here speech on friday, going to out to economic record strong, no question about that, u. S. Economy performed well, helped by probably going to be helped further by tax cut helped by deregulation, and going to spell out the the America First message, that is you know america, is tired perhaps of playing by other peoples rules, or playing by rules having the rest of the world not play by those rules going to interest whether in trade or immigration or whether broader approach to International Economy u. S. Is going to you know, put itself first if you like, a lot of people are not very happy they want u. S. To take globally leadership Global Responsibility to fall on u. S. Shourdz donald trump is going to tell them i think a friendly, cooperative way look this is working for us could work for you, and we want to work with you make it work for everybody. What are you hearing in terms of implications u. S. Tax law, because i was speaking to one earlier today told me a lot of customers in europe they had been expected to invest in europe, they are changing evolving around now putting money into u. S. , because of the favorable terms because of tax plan are you seeing a shift in terms of how people allocate money resources, back into u. S. Now . No question, i just come from a lunch ceos, dinner last night with ceos, everywhere you look, and whether American European expressing a willingness to invest in the United States in particular u. S. Tax rate down dramatically as a result of Corporate Tax rate, has come down as a result of the tax reform so u. S. Taxes are much lower now than much of the rest of the world that makes u. S. Quite attractive, onetime tax marine patration for u. S. Companies saw with apple last week other postpones Companies Going same thing not flush with cash going to invest it but we have, but offshore didnt want to bring back to United States because of high rates of tax so i think there is no question, by the way, i think one other thing, that he is helping investment talking to people here, and around the world, is you know as trump as President Trump talks about you know, protecting u. S. Business, getting more favorable trade deals some deals that some trade measures 24 hours more to come where are they going to invest if they want north america, they dont want to take risk being in mexico, canada because President Trump may finish nafta, looking at u. S. Going to invest in u. S. Pretty good picture for the pretty good Overall Economic outlook u. S. Has got right now. Maria expectations on nafta in a moment but let me ask you about top study in the journal in a Tariffs Administration gearing up to introduce infrastructure package but before that, instituting tariffs on washing machines solar panels largely aimed at those asian manufactures do you think this is the start of something bigger to come. It could be. So far these are relatively small i dont expect chinese, chinese said they are going to look what this means for their business whether or not they will retaliate some way, going to be small amount so far relatively small sectors i think down sided is that u. S. Consumers will scissor because cheap washing machines some cheap solar panels getting more expensive, so we will see the, i think the bigger question on trade still to come, whether or not the president s does did i decide to pull United States out of nafta would be huge important affect consumer in u. S. Probably more jobs in u. S. To a, of course, whether going adore on other issues Aluminum Steel with china i think u. S. Getting tougher, in terms of going for a fair trade agenda saying look, you know we have to compete on the same rules. And that is going to that causes the rest of the world to say well how much do we want business in the United States, how much are we worried about United States, about a trade war, do we retaliate or do we let it pass for now going to have to see we dont know yet. Maria will come to a head this year. Next few months, steel aluminum number nafta, quite soon, next few months, several key deadlines, the president has got to decide what to do. We will see if that impacts markets so far Financial Markets not listening to any from being a yourself around the world. Like have tax cuts deregulation one thing overlooked how much deregulation has been last year they like, for the rest of the world growing strongly we are in Europe Europe has been in stagnation 120 years last year or so picked up japan, has been in stagnation 20 years growing, the whole world is agreeing strongly the moment that is driving up speaking of europe macron getting positive remarks this trip, infrastructure, your thoughts, what should be suspect from plan fulfilling President Campaign promise. Some leaked out overnight this is a big everybody, anybody who goes to airport in u. S. Most airports travels on roads in u. S. , goes to ports knows u. S. Infrastructure is a lot of u. S. Infrastructure is creepy needs investment. Singapore dubai. Switzerland where we are things incredibly smooth even 10 feet of snow you just had last couple days, but the question u. S. Needs investment the question is, what is done how is it paid for the idea, i think is that the the aim to leverage, public funding by getting a lot of private money involved too so you could see billed roads, bridges, repair some airports that clearly need repairing, with a little bit of public money by significant Money Private sector money profits could be made from it should not adds significantly to the deficit in that way will only be a relatively small outlay probably money it could result in improvement to the Core Infrastructure of the u. S. Economy. Also a a pleasure looking at jerry baker from the wall street journal, well be right back. To their breeding grounds. Except for these two fellows. This time next year, were gonna be sitting on an egg. I think were getting close make a uturn. Uturn . Recalculating. Man, we are never gonna breed. Just give it a second. You will arrive in 92 days. Announcer live from davos, switzerland World Economic forum here is Maria Bartiromo with apple special edition of mornings with maria. Maria welcome back. Good tuesday morning, everybody. Thanks so much for joining us this morning. Im Maria Bartiromo. It is tuesday, january 23rd top stories 8 00 a. M. On the east coast, another win for tax reform this just in, about Jpmorgan Chase just announcing plans to increase wages, higher staff and open more branches with 20billiondollar investment push, the company will increase pay for 22000 employees, higher, hire 4,000 additional employees opening 400 new chase branches, j. P. Morgan shares, are right now down a fraction, as you can see initially they looked higher but we are looking at plat showing this morning, on nice. After j. P. Morgan, back open for business, democrats fold yesterday agreeing to end shutdown with circulatory term funding deal Sarah Huckabee sanders spoke but after the vote. What the president did clearly worked. The vote just came in 81 to 18 i would say those numbers are much more in the president s favor than in senator schumers favor not sure what changes for him what he gained other than nancy pelosi taking a bunch of republican plebs out for dinner to celebrate shut down not sure what other positive things came out for democrats. The shutdown, was obviously not really a big focus for wall street but the the markets rallied on nice that the deal had happened to end the Government Shutdown dow, nasdaq s p 500 closed record territory dow industrials up 143 points yesterday, one half 1 s p 3500 up almost 1 as nasdaq 72 points hire in nasdaq take a look at futures mixed markets the dow higher by a fraction all major indices given you have earlier rally dow up 5 s p 500 down two points nasdaq up 5 points right now, in europe, markets mixed as well take a look here, too you are looking at major indices having given up earlier rally, ft 100 positive by 21 points a quarter of a percent the dax index positive by two thinkers of a percent, also off highs, now cac quarante in paris turned negative, it was all green, across the board in asia hang seng best performer up better than 1 1 2 overnight putting America First trump nouning knew rounds of tariffs on solar panels wishing machines to keep u. S. Competitive on International Stage not as severe as some expected he i spoke with bank of america chairman moynihan this morning about new trade rules. U. S. Consumer economy is you know 65 , 70 almost a big economy on its own if that is growing at that rate seem spending, that helps all these are other countries, you really cant have a trade war demand so much so whether automobiles, whether it is tvs whatever it is u. S. Consumer lad to spend to do that. Being of the tar i have for International Trade coming this up morning right here earnings certainly a big focus on wall street, in business, four yellow components before opening bell transferals up better than 1 this morning after a strong Fourth Quarter you can see there Johnson Johnson also higher as is verizon this morning p g down 1 1 2 right now all reaction to all Companies Earnings in premarket. Stuart varney as well. Dont miss a moment a a deal reached after threeday shutdown government u. S. Reopened for business president busy with issues new tariffs to promote America First trade policy, blake burman live at white house with all the details, blake, good morning to you. Reporter maria good morning to you as well President Trump cell bra for once broke on capitol hill tweeted out from white house big win for republicans, as democrats cave on shutdown, now i want a big win for everyone, including republicans, ghademocrats daca especially for great military and Border Security should be able to get there see you at the negotiating table yesterday Chuck Schumer tried to paint this president as a passive witness to the negotiation but the white house says President Trump got exactly what he want wanted. White house refused to engage in negotiations over the weekend, the great deal making president sat on the sidelines. What the president did clearly worked. The vote just came in 81 to 18. I would say those numbers are much more in the president s favor than in senator schumers favor. What this funding squabble over means president will indeed head to doovrs this week at white house will sign into existence first set of tariffs imported residential washing machines with imported solar cells and modules the trade representative bob cashed it this way in a statement saying, the president action makes clear the Trump Administration will always defend american workers, Farmers Ranchers businesses, in this regard, maria tariffs range anywhere from 15 all the way to up 50 percent as relates to washing machineswhile poole force behind this loejdz first complaint dating back to 2011. Wowwhile pool was complaining that youve got washing machines from south korea that are basically a lot cheaper. Yes. Whirlpool thanks solar panels. Saying that they were coming too cheap from korea china had a hand in this, and all of this maria the president now heads to davos you know, a a forum of World Leaders and the president kind of setting a tone at least making a statement here, as he sits down pushes this trade message. Maria yeah, we are looking forward to that i know you will the travel here as well blake see you in a couple days. Reporter hopping on plane see you tomorrow. Maria see you tomorrow blake burman white house now we will see you soon on the ground here in davos, another win for tax reform jpmorgan abchase announcing planning to pass on savings from tax plan will hire new workers hike wages, about hiring staff opening more branches, with a 20billiondollar investment. The company will increase pay for 22000 employees hire 4,000 new employees, and open 400 new branches, chase branches joining me here has what is ceo of Deutsche Post said about impact of tax reform and productivity. It is probably more positive for the world than you know but these measures limited impact i am looking for fundamentals what world needs Everybody Needs productivity gains if you dont increase productivity you will never be successful productivity comes from better education of the People Better infrastructure, competitive precious means open borders that is the recipe. Joining me to talk more about that ceo of deloitte Kathy Engelbert thanks for joining us. Great upon to be here we are happy you are here you see point making there, i wonder how much this is persisting through the ceos that you are speaking with, yes they are happy about tax detail yes want infrastructure deal, but also worried about debt and deficit. Absolutely, debt and zests the top of the list but also growth and productivity gains as you heard, what is really important, though is the u. S. Is competitiveness in Global Economy i think you are seeing some of the results of that what a difference a year makes are on optimism that we see out there, with ceos. A lot of optimism i think these people coming to this forum this year, most optimism we have seen in a long time. As ceo of one of the largest professional organizations in the country, in terms of providing audit tax services, what is the real impact of this tax plan. Well there is a lot of optimism around Investment Capital that might have been on sidelines new capital new jobs being created, but we just issued readiness report 87 executives says fourth industrials revolution of bring higher presumptive more stability what is the last time we heard that word stability in business. J. P. Morgan saying they are going to invest 20 billion dollars in this economy, they are going to raise wages, going to hike you know, hire more people open branches, walmart, apple last week 38billiondollar tax bill there, companies are seeing the saving money on tax plan then passing on to employees. I think it is positive are to reinvest, whether employees Human Capital, intellectual capital also in sideline inside tools and technology that we see merging a. I. Socially mobile crowd companies ahead the ones that are going to integrate cross Human Capital and technology. You make a really good point when you bring up a. I. And all the technology that we are seeing, but there is a worry out there, that with a. I. And new innovations going to mean more robotics robots machines taking over jobs. You have been working a lot n the future of work, how do you see work changing. Yeah, i like to call it work of the future because sounds a little more optimistic a little more visionary we can chase work of the future important thing study i just looked at 14 executives said they are ready for the change, so there is a lot of opportunity to look at the Human Element combined with a. I. And bots most want bots in but, again, they need to look at their Human Capital as closely as they look at financial capital. When you take a look what people need to do this is a big deal, this is a big singling what are the truck driver know about a. I. A steal worker what does you know, an apparel producer know about any of this stuff we need a wholly new education ramp up arent we temperatures in skill sets required to survive in this new compromise i. Absolutely maria we need to look at whether 8 years or 80 years old, not everyone has to be stem fluent has to being techsavvy all you mentioned need to drive skills up, and i think we are doing some work with the Business Roundtable for instance on work force initiate things Public Private partnerships can fix things, that again a holistically businesses have to partner with governments to help. This is a private sector thing a government thing. Absolutely. Onus on everybody all parties involved. Absolutely. I have been listening to you sit there you are a Philadelphia Eagles fan arent you eagle to super bowl lii after huge win sunday what do you think. Time for someone new to win. At the best, there were questions on twitter about what president meant by prime time, in that tweet but the to cheryls point a crucial kind of window, of time because you are talking about time between transition to the presidency and the beginning of Robert Muellers probe what could be in those texts if you dont snow you speculate but in that time could be just about anything, so the questions lawmakers ask if you are so technologically savvy so many areas we are supposed to be able to do this amount to fight terrorism what have you o how do we end up losing Text Messages technically glitch they say. Secret society that is one of the last messages that we have seen, what is that secret society dont rule out a formal coincident yinquiry, is there corruption as well we break whether we come back future of farming the cofounder of the kitchen musk weighing in on americas agricultural industry. He is next. Back in a moment. Get out of my dream. Welcome back we are live this morning at Economic Forum davos, switzerland here all week talking with leaders across the globe the cofounder of big green kitchen and square roots kimble about musk great to see you. Thank you for joining us, we used to talk about agriculture think that i can say boring but there is so much going on in agriculture, right now farming. Really exciting. Really exciting. So what is going on past 20 years internet in connected world impacted almost every industry you can imagine, and now starting to impact agriculture and food. Everything from how we farm our land, all the way to getting food delivered to your memo, with he pressing a button on phone happening in 20172018 very exciting. You created gardens in the middle of huge urban areas like chicago, like new york city, tell us about that. Yes teach kids science through growing of food. And we are reaching a lot of kids, we build 100 learning at a time we started in denver big growth choi in partnership with mayor imanuel in seven cities announced detroit do you think people ins the rarity of this the fact there are portions of america where you have you are very far you dont have access to fresh food. Most america most america is really disconnecting from fresh food, and a massive opportunity for entrepreneurs to bring real food to americans what they are demanding, incredible business but also a really good thing to bring you to america. That is the best of it because when you go outside of america, it is even worse. It is it can be many kinds much worse. Tell me how you secure food in the country, i mean people are worried about terrorism, making its way through that. Well, i think there are many, many issues of terrorism not only food supply one of the lesser challenges, but for us it is about for me, it is about making sure our food he isproducing good real food most of our farm ethanol corn for ethanol, i know Carbon Neutral at best a waste of land again a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs to figure out what to do with that beautiful fertile soil lets you grow food. In terms of pricing what can you tell us in terms of how pricing changed given moved in commodities, commodities have been depressed lower cost past about to years, and i think what even get lower as we learn that ethanol isnt a great use of land will create more supply in form landed. Announcer here again is Maria Bartiromo with special edition of mornings with maria live from davos, switzerland at the World Economic forum. Maria welcome back. Good tuesday morning, everybody. Thanks for joining us this morning. Im Maria Bartiromo. It is tuesday, january 23 top stories right now 8 30 a. M. On the east coast. Trickle down tax reform, Jpmorgan Chase announcing new plans to pass on tax savings to employees, the company says it will hike wages, hire staff open branches with a 20billiondollar investment, in the United States, company says it will increase pay for 22000 employees, hire 4,000 additional employees, and open 400 new chase manhattan branches slaergs slightly lower making that announcements about an hour ago, nice comes amid economic boon President Trump will travel to doovz later this week, as u. S. Economy hits on all cylinders i spoke with ceo of Blackstone Group about state of u. S. Economy what, if anything, could derail this growth. Theres really stuff out there that worthy of concern. I think and those are the big risks. It is not the normal things people talk about at davos which are Economic Issues i this i the world is in a good place. Economically about as good as it could be pretty much. Maria glenn hitchins thoughts on that coming up markets rallied on news of the deal to end the Government Shutdown yesterday dow, nasdaq s p 500 closed record territory dow industrials yesterday up 142 points, half a percent higher s p 500 up 22 points, almost 1 hire nasdaq up 72 points almost 1 higher futures not so strong a mixed picture looks like dow industrials poised to open higher a fraction s p 500 now negative. Down more than half point nasdaq is up again slightly only 6 points higher, earnings driving the story four dow components reportingings fourth he quarter arranges before opening bell attractive levers up better than 2 up one 1 2 verizon missed expectations, that is off up one and twothirds percent breaking down news this morning right here. In europe, markets mixed take a look at union indices, as a lot of conversation here in davos about growth ringer to europe ft 100 up a third of a percent cac quarante in paris up a fraction dax in germany you up 3 4 of 1 , green across the Board Hong Kong best overnight hang seng up 1 2 3 percent topping news this half an hour, real threat to markets, u. S. Markets, continue a record run, everybody asking what could derail things just in few hours, in the davos i spoke with blackstone chairman and cofounder swooevteven schwarzma shared thoughts how geopolitical factors will influence markets. U. S. Announced they dont see the possibility of having north korea have a ballistic mill capability could hit United States with functioning Nuclear Warhead on top of it u. S. Has said that numerous times. No one apparently is listening, and the Financial Markets if that does happen, you would have i think Financial Markets that much different levels, and that doesnt mean up. So you know, theres theres real stuff out there that is worthy of concern. Joining me right now cofounder of north island glen humiliatechins great to see you the we could use flying cars talking about in earlier segment. You are right. Get around this place. It is hard with snow and all. Amazing. Has been took a long time to get here. Definition for grid lock. Talk about who you see in terms of markets you heard what Steve Schwarzman said how do you see record run what, in last year. Steve, my former partner, largely i agree with him i think the major risk to the markets are probably geopolitical type he talked about, referring to markets seemed very, very high. You can look across all sorts of measures earnings pes schiller pes all those things historic highs a very nervous making time period. Nervous making time period what changes the situation earnings, have been driving valuations right earnings have been largely good. That is right, and with tax bill coming in, where it is adding about 10 to projections already out there 10 growth this year doesnt look like there is an end in sight right now. But because Global Growth is synchronized we live in situation heave highlighting paradoxes a lot of uncertainty in the world, emanating from places like north korea, middle east, and even United States. You know with government being shut down. It is interesting. You weigh that against the Prime Minister of india coming in like premiere of china did last year taking some spinlt kind of interesting way. Did you see the Prime Minister india did well in opening remarks. Mays my impression, and that is my impression moving into can you call post u. S. Britain led world. Into the world being led and other interesting news 1 countries that part of tpp other than United States agreed to dont agreement. What about that u. S. Britain sort of withdrawing from World Leadership those countries stepping into that role, it is as american, not necessarily something gives you a lot of pleasure but as sort of looking if you are thinking broader question of markets, and the geopolitical risk very high rate we have in markets, leaders out there who are offering stability in world as well. There is a new poll of global ceos out this morning shows 57 of those expect globally growth this year that sentiment is twice level of last year, but you know we talked before about the market, being on you said perhaps a sugar high. Right. That is different than the backdrop in terms of Economic Growth we talked 4 growth. Another poll says 65 of consumers think stock prices are going up. And both those ceo poll and the consumer poll are almost certain measures of the stock market about to go other direction, historically. One of the things about the people there is a talk about davos consensus one of my experiences davos having been 18 years at the tell me doovrs consensus almost although these wrong diametrically wrong. Tr. Most optimistic doovz wdavos before finance minister crisis. I am not saying for two reasons one in short reason i weve got this tax bill going to add, i called it sugar high going to add some real sugar to the system so reason for there to be any blowoff. Right now. And this is an equity induced bubble about not a debt fed bubble, and the equity induced bubbles you can get through quickly correction happens quickly without long term overhang of debt one of the reasons it has taken so long to get to this growth we have global synchronized growths worked out debt overhanging great financial crisis cab take as much as 10 years historically. Guinness writing about that did a deal in terms of spending bill but only takes to february 8 still talking dent, i got to ask you about bitcoin you were my guest. Again . On wooet. Cant we get off this topic. So much feedback about that, what you said is forget about the Price Fluctuations you are focused on the behind it blockchain. That is what block championship we blockchain, i am focused on digital occurrences bitcoin could be long Digital Currency to transfer not store value, gold and dollars have in occurrences kurngs two functions transfer value is what interests me because Bitcoin Technology or Digital Technology creates the engineering opportunities to really fundamentally change the way we move money around the world. You know. Blockchain is allergicer for that bitcoin Protocol Technology enables that to happen. Blockchain a trust system, i trust you on the other side of the trade you trust me on the other side of the trade could i use dollars for that i dont neither cryptocurrency right. Quite the opposite it is we dont have to trust each other, because the blockchain creates mechanism there is a permanent record so you and i can transact without having to trust each other means all the costs of trust that are in the system today fraud risk credit risk custody risk payment risk, translation all that goes away. Davos to me is the home of climate change, it is home of openly borders, the home of globalism, the home of cradle to grave unsustainable welfare states name it out there on left that is davos here we have our president , President Trump a very different politician, he is going over there on thursday, he speaks on friday. Want you are there now, what are the elites saying about the forthcoming visit of of our president. I think everyone looking forward to it, you would be surprised. Really . Honestly, you are not seeing the kind of upset that you would expect given this president s sort of relationship with other World Leaders there is a lot of people here who are saying, of course, the president of United States should be here, of course, we want to see what the policies are out of u. S. After all it is setting the top for the rest of the world i dont know if you will heared earlier i was speaking with executives who said we were planning on investing in europe over the last year, we are shifting our entire strategy and investing in u. S. Because of the tax plan u. S. Policy is dictating a lot across the world, so i do think, it will be interesting to see who he hangs out with does bilateral meetings with World Leaders but there are 70 World Leaders here this week will be more an claimant change going to be about Global Growth you saw a imf did raising expectations for Global Growth under 4 not just u. Welcome back conversation debate over dreamers a hot topic in nation capitol Princeton University microsoft come together to urge congress to protect daca saying young people play critical roles make countless contributions to the Community Joining me president of Princeton University, Chris Eisgruber good to see you thanks for joining us. Good to be here. Tell me what you wrote in the letter to the president. Well, what president of microsoft and i said was that we know from permanent experience with students on princeton campus as employees, microsoft, these are people spent all their lives in america, who are lawabiding talented hardworking makes a difference to our future, as a country, and at princeton microsoft that we be able to keep these people at princeton as they have been promised. Yeah i mean they have been here they dont know anywhere else in terms of being their home we understand that. I think President Trump has said he wants to protect these dreamers as well. President has said that and i have heard it from both parties, and when a we want for them to come together a lot of Politics Around this obviously but these are wonderful people. Is what i guess what happened with shutdown democrats wanted to die immigration deal daca deal to spending bill what this republicans did not want to do. Exactly were seeing the future, and the fate of these young people tied to various things on both sides. You dont want to protect them at the expense of our military you dont want to protect them at the expense of american citizens do you . I want them. Everything is equally important. Allimportant objectives i understand that there are important disagreements taking place about those issues but i hope one thing we can agree on is importance of protecting people. We are watching protesters, at University Princeton as well talking about defending the daca, situation, let me ask you about free speech because we talk about this a lot on this program, conservative speaker to princeton says i want to make a speech do you get pushback from student body stop them from speaking. Free speech is what universities do critical to Education Research and when any speaker gets invited to princeton we want to make sure that speaker is available to speak. We do not in fact on contrary what were going to do is if there is a sensitive situation make sure the speakers can speak interested students can ask questions, protesters that is part of free speech, too. You think universities want a diversity in peach quick a. I. About what are you doing.
