In terms of the military, lea, what are the real implications in terms of government shutting down . I think the real implications are that its not likely that we will have a longterm shutdown. We have seen this happen before. I was out doing local news in san diego and i saw the impact to government employees, so the people who are nonessential, they will get the people that are essential, people like law enforcement, theres still going to be on the job, have those people who are in the Emergency Services still working, but i think the real implication, maria, is that i think it looks really bad for the government, to the American People, that is what i saw out working in local news in san diego, when the government shuts down, the citizens go, why cant you get your act together. Maria yesterday the wall street journal made oped, regardless of whose fault it is, the republicans usually get blamed. I dont know if thats going to be the case this year. I dont know, democrats are betting on that big time and i actually think they want this shut down to happen because it stalls some of this good news youve been seeing on the tax cut. So they are betting on that big time. Because they have and we have talked about this, because they have all three houses and the house, senate and the white house, the democratic argument will be just that, that its their fault. Maria youre in charge. The president even said it, you want to keep the news on what it is, you want to keep it on the market where it is and tax cuts, you want to keep it there if you can. Vote passed 230 to 197. Main stumbling block is daca. Democrats are the only thing standing in the way of a budget deal. Senator schumer do not shut down the federal government. It is risky. It is reckless and it is wrong. I ask the American People to understand this, the only people standing in the way of keeping the government open are Senate Democrats. Im not trying to play for political points, even false ones, i am trying to get us to come together on a bipartisan nature to get something done. Maria if the deal does not emerge by midnight tonight the government will partially shutdown. In terms of a partial shutdown, brian, the senate is it going to pass the spending bill . Its all up to the senate. I really do not think Senate Democrats want this to pass. They are looking at the news cycle and looking at effects of tax cut which they lambasted and they are seeing headline after headline who say worker pay is going up, retirement is going up, they dont want to deal with that because that will undermine chances in 2018. I think they welcome the shutdown to get the news off of whats going on with the tax cuts. It is going to reflect poorly on republicans and gives them opportunity to focus on pet projects but the question is it could backfire, and i think so. Maria i think so too. I dont think it looks good for anybody if the government shuts down. Maria especially, lea, so many people are getting one thousand dollar bonus checks and 401 k contributions and higher minimum wage like walmart did and apple investing 350 billion in the next years. The obstructionism, i dont know that this is going to work this time. I honestly dont know either. Im not smart enough political strategists to figure this one out but a good argument on the republican side on both ends of this, on one hand you cut a deal, even on daca, i know thats not going to happen now, last week youre having the conversation, you cut the deal even though majority of Trump Supporters seem to be in favor of that you get money for Border Security and you move on and keep the news cycle focus on what you want it to be focused, higher stock market, youre talking about a better economy, but in speaking you probably see this too, maria, with people who are familiar with the way the white house sees things, theres a line of thinking, i see this argument as well, now is the time we take a stand and we really call the democrats out and the president and his party can come out of that benefiting politically. Maria yeah. I definitely see both sides of that. Im not really sure. Both sides are tugging at the hard strings of what their constituents will be interested in, right, we werent hearing i have been talking about continuing resolutions on the show and how they are hurtful to the military over and over again and now youre hearing policymakers bringing up the continuing resolution and try to make the point thats damaging to the military. Isnt the military good to go in terms of payment depending on the time it happens, when military members get paid . Yes, overall answer would be yes but also depends on what kind of service they do, if they are on temporary duty orders, theres more that goes into it than that, im not an expert on military pay, but the point being you hear military leaders talk about the effects of continuing resolutions and funding the military that way, it puts them on last years budget, they cant plan and the military being the Strongest Military in the world is all about being to plan programs out, know what money youll have in the future to do it and when youre short on money it comes to readiness dollars. What they are going to do is put forward those ships, member that is need to be deployed right now for Current Operations and what ends up getting hurt is the people that are supposed to be prepared. Maria lea, go through where deficiencies are. Biggest needs, i think, as i was saying is being able to plan for those military modernization programs and then also just having the dollars to be able to do the training and when you get a new program, you need to be able to train military to be up to speed but you only have to look as far as some of the actions with ship collisions where the points that are being brought out are people didnt get the training that they need, the ships arent getting out to sea, when they are needed operationally, they are not getting the training. It comes down to overall picture. Its not really specifically one program or another, its the whole picture that youre just putting a big clog in the system that the military needs to be able to be strong and run.
