Medal of Honor recipient and Kentucky native Ernie West has died, Gov. Andy Beshear said at his Monday press conference. The Army veteran was 89.
West's death was not related to COVID-19, Beshear said.
The governor commended West for his service Monday and noted his years of work with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, especially his efforts to bring a veterans cemetery to Greenup County.
"He worked with state legislators and local officials to secure the land and the state match funding for construction," Beshear recalled, "and he was there on Oct. 1, 2010, for the dedication of the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast. He made it happen."
