Twice over 1st by a recession and now by coronavirus clubs how much of an impact will the pen demick have on society in the waning work we take a look at what happened after the spanish flu outbreak more than 100 years ago. Im sorry kelly welcome to the Program Germany could be on the way out of its coronavirus lock down the countrys Influential National academy of sciences has recommended that a starkey made on easing the restrictions imposed to contain the virus now the economy is 14 as the number of new confirmed cases in germany fell for the 3rd day running it also set the scene for consultations this week by chancellor Angela Merkel on what should happen after the current restrictions expire next sunday one of the main recommendations of the report is. That the primary and the secondary schools be allowed to gradually reopen they could soon be followed by shops stores and nightclubs restaurants would reopen next as long as their tables are placed further apart mouth nose protection should be used as an additional protective measure and g. P. S. Data offered voluntarily by mobile phone users could be used for Contact Tracing so lets get more on this now we are joined by Political Correspondent in cape kate brady from berlin so kate tell us these recommendations here from germanys National Academy of sciences what do they actually mean. Well what it means basically is that we could indeed potentially see at least a relaxation of those restrictions that are currently in place here in germany and which were implemented on the announcement by german chancellor Angela Merkel on march 22nd but of course if you look very closely at some of these recommendations that have been made by the institute it does indicate that it would be a very slow very gradual return to any kind of sense of normalcy here in germany and even though there is the suggestion that perhaps schools could reopen even that would be for a very small groups of maybe around 15 children to make sure that students would still be able to practice social distancing for example and also if you look at the recommendation that perhaps restaurants could be opened again and that people could go and be closer in closer contact with each other in public that comes with the guideline that people would be wearing protective masks for example so a big question would be also to make sure that germans people here in germany have access to enough protective gear and thats something that the German Health ministry has already been working on in the past week so some interest in suggestions here which will be taken into consideration during meetings this week but i think the clear message is that this will be very much a slow and gradual return or rather a relaxation of restrictions if indeed thats what something that the government decides to do here in germany and why are these suggestions so important kate. Well this is the institute that german chancellor Angela Merkel and the 16 state premiers will be paying a lot of attention to when they discuss via telephone conference this week as to whether or not the restrictions here in germany should indeed be lifted but of course there are many many factors to take into consideration here and not least of all the advice as well that we keep hearing around the world specifically from the World Health Organization as well against lifting these restrictions on movement too early of course the last thing that anywhere in the world wants right now but of course germany included in that is a spike in the number of cases of coronavirus and until now germany compared to some of its neighboring states has come of relatively lightly when it comes to the number of cases here in germany which is at around 126000. 00 as well as the number of deaths so the last thing that we want here in germany right now of course is a backward step which of course could see stricter measures even reimplemented here in germany against a lot of different factors to consider as those meetings get underway on wednesday certainly a delicate balance that authorities will be considering here Going Forward how will people cope if indeed these recommendations are implemented. Well of course nothings going to change drastically over night and i think a lot of people will approach a potential relaxation overstretch and with a certain amount of trepidation of course social contact has changed dramatically in germany now just like in many other countries around the world in response to the coronavirus and i think that will certainly change if not in the coming months years if not for an entire generation of people already saying that their behavior will be different and of course simple measures like rigorous hand washing making sure that social contact will close contact is kept to a minimum keeping your distance from people in public thats something thats going to stick with people for a long long time to come so even if we do see a relaxation of restrictions here in germany normal social interaction is certainly going to be very very different for a long time to come kate brady in berlin thank you kate well spain has been one of the hardest hit countries in the coronavirus pandemic now the country is loosening some of its coronavirus lockdown measures after a fall in the death toll and a fall in new cases in recent days so workers are returning to their jobs after 2 weeks at home transit officials in the capital madrid are limiting the number of passengers on metros and buses and distributing 10000000 facemasks to commuters but most of the country is still required to stay at home after more than 17000. 00 coronavirus steps. Lets bring in correspondent Philip Schultz who has the view from seville on the story so you have a look i mean weve seen one of the worst outbreaks of cove in 1000 in europe and you know spain has had very strict lock down measures there as a result now construction and Industrial Workers are being allowed to go back to work what are the reasons behind that decision and why now. I think one of the main reasons behind the decision is that the Spanish Government is increasingly worried that the economic and especially the social consequences of the extreme lockdown measures of the past 2 weeks might be beyond treaty if they continue for too much longer as you said the spanish locked on rules among the strictest in the world work i couldnt go to the offices and people couldnt even leave their apartments to go out for a walk and we also had to be stressed that we are talking about this very very carefully relaxations very carefully rick station of measure us now 90 percent of the routes remain in place and so for example almost all of the shops also remain closed but of course there is a political debate that was too early for such a step now its just too risky for the head of the government. In the region knauss stuff the country for example sets that governments measures reckless and that he wants to understand the medical and scientific reasons behind it ok so some harsh words there how about the overall mood now that were having having this lockdown loosened. I think we are still very far from normality yet and of course the questions are also discussed on the streets you see very few commuters at the moment which is also due to the fact that in many regions its still a Public Holiday today but the few people you see out of the on the streets they are still very cautious that they practice social distancing and from what i have heard the distribution of millions of masts transportation has been going quite well so far john Philip Schultz with the view from spain thank you. We had to argentina now where there are just over 2000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and like most countries around the world it is under lockdown but argentina was in recession before the pandemic struck so the restrictions have dealt another big blow the poor have been the hardest hit and the poorest neighborhoods of the capital but aside ace in those neighborhoods people are coming together in order to help each other. In the poor settlements around buenos aires soup kitchens are popping up everywhere its russian style so young for those in this district who lost their jobs even overnight. On a mission of im not currently working so i dont receive a salary if you work on the side paid in cash like me you wont earn a center right now and im. Not tell you cant work as a cleaner because of a strict curfew thats why neighborhood cooperatives are delivering food to families in need. Volunteers cook for hundreds of their neighbors financed by city grants and by donations especially for the poorest of them. A lot of the land of the cooking for the garbage collectors who werent allowed to go out on the streets. And so they cant collect. And recycle garbage. Were now delivering lunch. With every additional day of lockdown more argentinians are dependent on Community Help the lines outside the soup kitchens are getting longer the corona crisis exacerbates the social crisis is it that some. Of these volunteers they take care of us homeless. We get food at least 3 times a week. Even before the lockdown argentina was on the verge of National Bankruptcy. President Alberto Fernandez was trying to renegotiate the repayment of massive debt then came the pandemic now its unclear how argentina will be able to repay the 1000000000. 00 debt and how the country will steer clear of that much feared National Bankruptcy the homeless are fending for themselves as they did before corona. During the lockdown they have no place to which they can retreat and donations are scarce. Look weve always lived in fear and hunger corona is secondary to us. Argentinas retirees are also part of the corona High Risk Group but many of them have to line up together to collect their pension money. I havent received money in a month i dont know how far in debt i am and i have to pick up my pension in person. Argentina and its people are facing even more difficult times the coronavirus state of emergency is far from over. Well time now to take a look at some other news coming in from around the world strong storms pounded the Southern United States on sunday killing at least 6 people in mississippi and damaging up to 300 homes and buildings the National Weather service says that strong winds were sweeping through other parts of the state as well. Turkish president recha type area one has rejected the resignation of his interior minister who took responsibility for this weekends much criticized coded 1000 curfew the announcement of the 48 hour lockdown caught millions by surprise and prompted panic buying 2 hours before it took effect on friday night. And the french navys only Aircraft Carrier the shards of call has arrived at the southern port of too long after 15 naval personnel tested positive for the coronavirus the entire crew of around 1500. 00 sailors will be tested for the virus and isolated for 2 weeks. All in times like these knowing where to get help where to get tested or perhaps just locating your nearest town washing station is Vital Information and data can help here now we turn to which is a kenyan crowdsourcing technology that has in the past been used to collect data for Disaster Relief elections and crisis responses organizations all of the world are using platforms like these to navigate the coronavirus crisis. In data and information thats job is the project coordinator at map kibera an organization that has been marking up its biggest slum for the past 10 years. To corona Virus Outbreak has shifted the focus turns digital maps now hes documenting handwashing stations clinics and aid efforts we have like the water board could be like this one its on the mop but we all thought about where we set it. We have our thoughts. About how so many get beat up people we say from our supply we also have facebook credits like you could have it with oh well we have here to number of could get up before. Joshua and to steam have also started documenting all corona cases confirmed by the Kenyan Ministry of health if heath information into digital maps on the open source platform a shady the platform allows users to create their own topical maps and adding information to geographical points from up there have been collecting data like this for years i mean the ships around the world are now using the shaky technology to collect data about corona related responses and problems in that part of the world. To show he website shows its being used in europe asia the us and latin america and italy for instance an initiative maps are places to get food and medical supplies and in japan users are reporting the corona testing experiences. So in the last 3 weeks you see more than 300. 80 platforms and its being used across the world i think one thing thats come up yet is that for us to be able to deal with this crisis were going to have to rely on you know people collective responsibility right you know people are being asked to stay in the cup that a lot of informational got this hour that people on the ground people who are experiencing some of these issues will be able to bring to light and involve people who can then jump in and and supports while the Kenyan Technology is making its way around the world the hope is that the data will also help governments and International Organizations and responding to the crisis. Well oil prices have failed to rally after the worlds major producing countries agreed to what is being called the biggest Oil Production cut ever prices fluctuated because of concerns that the action by the Production Cartel opec along with russia and others will be enough to produce a glut of oil on the market. Opec plus which brings together the oil cartel with other producers like russia said it would reduce world output by 10 percent. Within 2 months opec and opec plus countries will reduce production by 10000000. 00 barrels us for the next 6 months they will cunt production by 8000000. 00 Barrels Per Day and for the 16 months after that begins 6000000 barrels will be cut kurdish. Oil prices going into freefall on worries about the virus and a price war between saudi arabia and russia but low prices threaten the u. S. Shale oil industry. President donald trump welcomed the deal calling it a great deal for all. But with oil times filling up around the world Energy Hungry industries shutdown many analysts are warning the agreement may do little to stabilize the oil market. And here are a few more business stories for you the g 20 intends to offer low Income Countries a freeze on bilateral government loan repayments as part of a plan to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and to prevent a debt crisis in emerging markets thats according to a report in the Financial Times the plan is expected to be finalized at a finance ministers meeting later this week. The worlds biggest pork producer Smithfield Foods will close a major plant indefinitely in south dakota after more than 200. 00 staff contracted cofa 19 the companys c. E. O. Says that such closures are pushing americas meat supply quote perilously quote seizing parents perilously close to the edge. The u. S. Has seen a high number of infections among the workers. But japanese tech and finance conglomerate soft bank says that it expects a 7000000000. 00 net loss for the year to the end of march soft banks woes are not just coronavirus related it also suffers huge losses as a result of a string of major problems with its investment in Office Space Company we work. A century ago a deadly flu swept the world with devastating consequences that changed the way that people lived today the coronavirus is also likely to leave a social and Cultural Impact already terms like social distancing and self isolation have become part of everyday language but what changes can we expect to last history may offer a clue if habits like handshake are to become a thing of let. A deadly pandemic descended on the world. After the 1st world war as if people hadnt suffered enough already the virus known as the spanish flu tore across the globe 100 years ago hitting middle aged people hardest experts say it probably started in the u. S. Then spread worldwide with dramatic consequences. About one 3rd of the german population was sick and to some degree. In all of europe to a point 3000000 people died. And worldwide at least 25000000. Possibly 50000000 or double even that. Doctors have little at their disposal to fight the virus no ventilators no antibiotics. The only thing that helped was keeping people apart from each other. Is that this shows that the most important step in stopping the spread of the path is separating people by shutting down every day life and interactions. Pandemics are both brutal and educational the spanish flu showed that quarantines help. After the 1st world war and the spanish flu the work economy started looking up the history of pandemic shows that they lead to advances and innovations. Another example the plague it killed millions of people in the middle ages yet later had extraordinary economic and societal effects. In germany one out of 10 people died. Across europe it was more like one out of 4 it led to enormous rises in labor costs which in turn created pressure from mechanization. And that helped set the stage for the Industrial Revolution and a breakthrough in the 18th century. Experts say the corona pandemic will likewise have far reaching effects on society and the way we work its already driven the digitalisation of daily life even faster making innovations in the home office Video Conferencing and internet shopping the norm. History shows that a different approach to work and life is inevitable after a global event like the cold at 9000 virus. And now to russia where there has been a spike in corona virus cases in recent days hospitals in the capital moscow have seen a big influx of patients and authorities fear the situation will only get worse. Shadow met a woman who has made it her mission to help medical staff fighting on the front line in the battle against the coronavirus honest and god has converted her parking spot in an underground garage in moscow into a Storage Space shes coordinating donations for doctors treating coronavirus patients things like disinfectant kettles disposable plates and utensils and protective gear here we have very short things. Here. This week and not. Believe right now yeah yeah here is the main goal here is to say thank you to the doctors because so i really appreciate everything that they are doing right now that theyre fighting every day you know and. We leave their health to were oh. You know we just get back to all where common life despite a lockdown in moscow honest and go god wants to ensure her donations reach doctors as quickly as possible there are now moscow hospitals treating coronavirus patients and a new hospital with 500 beds is being completed but until its operational the majority of patients are being treated here in co minorca at the capitals outskirts as well as needing protective clothing medical staff also have to eat honest succeeded in getting a canteen kitchen quickly on board it was already producing up to 10000 ready to eat meals with fresh vegetables for regular clients. Request theyre also now delivering 650. 00 freshly made meals to doctors and nurses in moscow every day for free. We consider it our duty to help the doctors they bear the most responsibility right now were making special finger food for them so that they can eat quickly and get back to their patients that are going to do what you are used to doing what the actual flamed you know word of Honest Initiative has spread throughout moscow shes managed to convince more than 40 companies and organizations to donate goods for me this is a good sign because its showing how important is to be together to be connected and how easy to do this and this is probably. The thread to say that but its probably a good side of. This means that people can be still very connected no one knows when russias coronavirus up the demick will peak but for honest angle got its clear that her help is needed now more urgently than ever. On the coronavirus has driven much of the worlds population into lockdown its created a lot of stress but even in the worst situations theres sometimes something to smile about lets take a look now at how people from indonesia and bella bruce are getting to grips with those social distancing whirls. When the moon comes out ghosts roam the streets of indonesias java province. But theyre not souls damned to wander while repenting their sins theyre volunteers scaring people into staying home and. Africa today 1st of all we want to be different secondly we want to create a deterrent effect because its spooky and scary so when we show up its a deterrent. Getting kids to wear masks has been tough for many parents around the world this chinese man created a full body antivirus suit for his son so he could take him to a shanghai park he said a tough goal. My son is wearing it during the epidemic i hope to provide him with total protection and isolation. If anyone bothers him the boy looks like he can handle himself. Meanwhile in the u. S. State of maryland a wine store uses a dog named soda to bridge the 2 metre gap dictated by social distancing guidelines so to is much more than a curiosity hes a social media hit whos bringing in new business. You know that even i thought. On facebook and i just had to i love y. So i love i love dogs you put the 2 together that make the drive. And in belarus the coach of the dynamo breast soccer team came up with a novel way to keep players from getting demoralized by playing in almost empty stadiums mannequins adorned with the faces of fans whove sent their pictures and. While the virus continues its path of destruction and this should have liked to use help make social distancing just a little more interesting and perhaps even fun.
