a south korean film becomes the 1st ever non english language film to take home the top oscar will tell you who else took home the coveted trophy. i mean good craft glad you can join me a major winter storm is bearing down on germany and other parts of europe after already battering the british isles germany's entire long distance rail network is down and people across the region are advised to stay indoors. blustery day at the bache in the belgian port of austin and despite the high winds walkers were out in force no swimming ones a sign not that many appeared keen to take a dip. in the capital brussels the elements hamet buildings exposed to the storm's fury. in island go away was forced to cancel the opening ceremony for its year's european city of culture and the aptly named wow did land he quite on the west coast took a pounding. flooding in the north of england caused extensive damage to route towns and villages as the storm battered britain there's been widespread transport disruption with emergency services warning people to travel only if absolutely necessary. there were chaotic scenes at london train stations travelers simply i'm able to reach their destinations. myself on train county that was something that's going to pass a few cyclists get on so i know my name but unless one it's been delayed country and the complex night she's going to kill. time i'm times you can tell change the console. airports across europe canceled hundreds of flights kitten month i have a business appointment tomorrow in berlin and was planning to travel to nice but i guess that's not going to happen. continent who europe's west in the northern coast lines have also borne the brunt of the storm and it's not over yet with the storm now sweeping across the southern shores of the boat takes a let's turn to masa row or column in who is our reporter in hamburg i spoke with earlier. we actually just had to go inside because the storm is now really that's running the city of hamburg and driving rain outside. blowing sideways those gusts are really kicking in now once they're dying down and you might think that it's fine but once they're picking up these gusts of over 100 kilometers an hour it's getting quite how to stand out there which is why we decided actually to go back back inside the news we're getting from across campus is that a lot of trees are falling down the falling onto the road some 2 cars on 2 on the train tracks as well so that. not only regional train services but also in the regional transit buses had to be suspended and we seen pictures of facades of houses getting torn off by the wind and we hear that the police as a fire said in hamburg actually had to go out at least 200 times up until this point. what we expect now is that this is going to continue to keep going through the night this wind and that we you know wait up to see what the real damage is in the morning here in hamburg and what about every day you know the people there what have they been doing to cope or to get ready for this storm. definitely some people that we so outside were kind of fascinated in checking out how how strong these winds are getting but now as we got more into the night the most what we saw what kind of realizing that this is nothing to be to be to be in the open and that most people would have had to find to find shelter and authorities same question what are they doing to prepare and are they prepared. it seems that cricket i mean we're in hamburg it's a it's a harbor city is close to the coast storms like this they stand that they don't happen every week every month but they actually do have them every 2 years and about the strength so it seems to me that a bird is prepared as much as bad as much as they can be because the phone like that obviously is going to do some damage the main thing is to ensure that no one gets hurt and that firefighters and emergency services are on the scene and from what we've seen here in hamburg they seem to seem to be prepared to a motto of our common farewell for us in homburg stay dry stay safe and keep on reporting for us thank you health authorities in china have reported another uptick in the corona virus outbreak they say the death toll has passed 900 and that more than $40000.00 cases of the virus are reported across the country. meanwhile thousands of people were allowed to disembark a cruise ship in hong kong after a 4 day quarantine resulted in passengers testing negative for the virus meanwhile another crew ship off japan remains in quarantine with dozens of confirmed cases. earlier we spoke with stereo's moscow a molecular biologist from northumbria university in the u.k. we asked him if the outbreak has reached its peak the number of people getting infected is remaining certainly consistent it's that it's not accelerating. one house that was you know we all are going to make our preference or will have until the next few days house take over time to work in china the economy doesn't continue moving on the the grio risk is that we have a disease the number of cases so quietly high and those cases place a substantial on health care providers. anyway even in the west that we have those kind of numbers we would be struggling to keep up with the cases so that's the concern where it stands the next concern is the i remember that your article so close to the child means there's a there's a lot of people out there even here to newcastle up to people wearing masks you don't need to be wearing must unless you you yourself are experiencing flu symptoms and this is not my opinion this is where the double your insurer comes he was going away courting must this is not what we need to be doing because there's not enough of us any protection from getting x. or the fires we need to be making the resources available to china and other countries were under resourced compared to china so that if the situation gets worse they have the necessary supplies and. and now for some of the other stories making news around the world the u.s. military says 2 of its soldiers were killed and 6 others wounded when an afghan soldier opened fire on them the incident took place in the now in our province in eastern afghanistan the afghan defense ministry reports one of its soldiers was also killed and 3 more wounded. l.g.b. t. groups in switzerland are celebrating after voters approved a law that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation the measure passed with 63 percent of the vote supporters argue that mall allowing shoppers to escape then track down the gunman more than 40 people were also wounded in the attack it took place in the city of car at northeast of bangkok. a vigil for the lives lost hundreds of people gathered sunday night with buddhist monks chants and prayers and bottomless scream. earlier at the city morgue this man and his wife lost their son in the rampage. at 13 he was the youngest victim. but he was my only son. i let him do anything he wanted to i never put pressure on him. i just wanted him to be a good person. scenes of terror at the mall these people narrowly escaped after being freed by security forces. thai officials have identified the killer as sergeant jakrapob told ma the sharpshooter reportedly killed his commander and 2 others at his military base before opening fire at the shopping center. the prime minister revealed the killers likely motive. our investigations have found that the gunman had a passionate dispute over land with his senior officer and the officers mother in law they argued for 3 days nobody expected it to turn violent. the prime minister has admitted that mental health is an issue in the military one that investigators will look into. but for now there are more questions than answers and the morning over the deadliest mass shooting in thailand's history has just begun. and let's turn to some lighter news over in hollywood it's the glitziest night of the year the 92nd academy awards just wrapped up in los angeles and the world's biggest film stars gather the dolby theater for a night of oscar honors the ceremony covered 24 categories both technical and creative at south korean film parasite that walked away with 4 gold statuettes making it the 1st non english language film to win best picture. let's get more now with k.j. matthews an entertainment journalist there in los angeles hey k.j. so just wrapped up give us the dry lights. can you believe parasite parasite parasite is all everyone's talking about tonight they mate history maker boone that is jones who won for best director of the film won for best picture best international and breast screenplay that is never happened no filmmaker or field from south korea has ever won an oscar and certainly not best picture and certainly not best director all in the same night so everyone's talking about that they thought that it would be a high contrast between the joker in 1917 but that was not the case it was all parasites and i. definitely big news confer south korea especially what about diversity i mean 5 years since you know hash tag oscar so white and yet still that's been brought up as a point where where where did the oscar stand on that so here's the problem tonight if you watch the oscars there was more diversity on stage in the performances and the presenters than i've ever seen that was wonderful the problem is with the nominations there were no females nominated in the best director category and there was only one black woman nominated in the acting category so there was a complete lack of diversity and inclusion when it comes to oscar nominees and a lot of people's point of the fact that the academy is still overwhelmingly white and overwhelmingly male and until that changes you probably won't see that many changes although the numbers are showing that there are more people of color in front of the camera it's just not moving the dial fast enough for many people here in hollywood so maybe a bit of a disconnect between the films and the society they're supposed to be representing speak to that a bit is what is the cultural impact of the oscars if they're even still is one. you know how people talk about that every year they say look middle america here watches one set of films which are usually sequels and blockbusters and then when you come to hollywood it's all those art parts art house films that are honors unfortunately there is still a disconnect although i think that divide is closing you're starting to see many many more films honored over the years meaning black panther in a lot of other films but there's still a long way to go in terms of diversity inclusion and having hollywood really recognize the films that middle america and the rest of the world love at the box office. so parasite aside was of course is big news any other surprises anything that surprised you you know i was surprised to see him and then perform i could not believe he was performing on stage and i said to myself why is imminent here what it was it was a tribute to all the past winners of the best original song category and people forget that he won for the song lose yourself 17 years ago for the movie 8 mile so he was on performing that song to honor people in that category so that was quite surprising i think when it comes to all of the the winners it wasn't too surprising we knew that joaquin feelings would win for a joke or we pretty much thought the renee zellweger would take it away from judy in the best acting category and we want to surprise what laura dern what is well we were a little bit surprised when brad pitt finally won his 1st oscar after being in this business for more than 2 decades so that was heartwarming definitely and i had to see him except the award and dedicated to his kids great absolutely big night in los angeles casey matthews in
