She dreamt of being madam moving to paris and becoming a scientist and then a family with real wisdom told her that if you want to dream big, dream about going to america. Thats where great science happens. Were determined to return great science to america by invest 2 of our gdp in science and technology. Im being a little facetious but you know what it must have been like saying it is time for dinner say what [laughter] anyway. Thank you. Ive long said america can be defined by a single word and that is a plateau with xi jinping i spent time with him oneonone since i was Vice President and since then and he said we have simultaneous interpreters he said can you define america i said one word sincerely, possibilities. Possibilities. The fact that several today honorees imimmigrated from other countries is the truth of assertion that everything is possible. More technological change in the next ten years maybe the next five years, and in the last 50 years. Theres large part to the minds in front of with us about and i want america to lead to lead that change because of the greatness of a country is measured not only by the size of its economy and the strength of its military. Its the strength of the nation is also measured by its boldness of a science, quality, of its research and progress it helps bring forward for not only country but the whole world. And this Administration America will be the place where great science happens. Now starting on day one, in the middle of the pandemic, we have vaccinated a nation the greatest operational effort ever undertaken by this country operational. And we did it with these strategy based on science, not on politics. Now, sciences are exploring whether m or n technology brought us safe and effective covid vaccines can be used against cancer and top minds my Council Advises on science and technology and elevated office of science and Technology Policy to a cabinet level position. It is helping lead major initiatives on everything from artificial intelligence, to advance research and help to drive break throughs in how we direct and treat cancer diabetes, alzheimers and other diseases and this year, were investing 200 billion dollars in research an and development in addition i sign a law that ships science act, and then Inflation Reduction Act two of the most significant Investments America has ever made to supercharge research and innovation and job creation. Already private companies have announced over 600 billion dollars in investments in industries from clean energy to advance manufacturing, right here in america. Right now nasa is leading the mission on mars. And our phones we can see images of the red planet before we can only dream of seeing. Were further into space than ever before, and answer of most fundamental question about how the universe began is not far away. All of this and so much more is happened because america is leading the way and because the people in this room and the labs across the country are leading. It matters. It matters. I want to close with this. Last year i want president kennedys library and museum in boston deliver a speech about what i refer to as cancer moon shot and my wife jill and i reignited after we got to the white house. How ive said before, if theres one thing i wish as president i could do it would be ending cancer as we know it. For two reasons, one, america gab to lose faith in its ability to do anything. One thing prove to americans is ending cancer theres more important things and more consequential than ending cancer. Weve never set our mind to a project we havent accomplished. If we do it together for those who have lost like many of us in this room, and for the ones we can save i dont just hope we can do it, i know we can do it. I was in that library kennedys daughter caroline dear friend she prepghted me with her fathers framed speech. Answering question of why he was sending americans to the moon. Americans to the moon and heres what he said. And in the letter said president kennedy said it was because the challenge is one were unwilling were willing to accept. And one were unwilling to postpone. And one in which we intend to win. Thats the american attitude. Unwilling to postpone. We are unwilling postpone and weve been postponing a lot of things too long and all of you today yowing been unwilling to postpone thats america at our best we have to remember who in gods name we are. Were the United States of america. Theres nothing nothing beyond our capacity if we set our mind to it and do it together. So thank you very much.
