Arsenal got the 2022/23 Premier League season underway with a 2-0 victory away at Crystal Palace. Gabriel Martinelli’s opener and an own goal from Marc Guehi sent the Gunners top of the league on opening night.Mikel Arteta watched his side get off to an electric start at Selhurst Park. After missing a gilt-edged chance in the opening minutes, Martinelli soon made amends and headed his side in front from a well-worked corner routine. Arsenal - spearheaded by the brilliant Gabriel Jesus - continued to dominate as Patrick Vieira could only watch his players cling onto the narrow deficit.Although, after half an hour, the Eagles started to click and began to apply similar pressure at the other end. They fashioned the best chance of the game on the stroke of half-time but Aaron Ramsdale came to the rescue when Odsonne Edouard really should have brought parity to the scoreline.Palace continued where they left off following the half-time interval and Ebere Eze should also have equalised when he was excellently played through on goal by Wilfried Zaha. Once again though, Ramsdale was in the right place to keep his clean sheet firmly intact.The hosts continued to push for a goal of their own but were often met by William Saliba who, like Jesus, was enjoying a fantastic Premier League debut. His resilience was soon rewarded at the other end when he watched Bukayo Saka put the game beyond their London rivals. The young England winger raced down the right wing and Guehi could do no more than turn his whipped cross beyond Vicente Guaita.The result takes Arsenal top of the league with it being the very first game of the season and provides Arteta with the perfect foundation to build from. As for his opposite number, there were plenty of positives to take from the game but it was the sluggish start that ultimately cost Vieira’s side a chance of a result against a slick Arsenal side.(Photo: Getty Images)
