Maryland Republican lawmakers are fiercely opposing a proposal to provide COVID-19 relief funds to undocumented taxpaying workers.GOP senators charge Democrats are pushing a far-left agenda, while Democrats argue issues surrounding COVID-19 must include tax fairness.A civil but heated discussion took place Wednesday on the Senate floor over legislation that would provide COVID-19 relief money to low-income taxpaying workers who are not U.S. citizens. Senate Bill 218 would benefit some 60,000 people."So we are going to spend $60 million creating a special welfare program and checks for these individuals," said Sen. Michael Hough, R-Frederick and Carroll counties."They are already paying sales tax, they are already paying property tax and they are just trying to do what they can to make sure their family can survive, so this is tax fairness," said Sen. Craig Zucker, D-Montgomery County."Today was a microcosm of the entire session. We are seeing more liberal bills get in there. It is going farther and farther left," Senate Minority Leader Bryan Simonaire said. The fiercely contested legislation is part of a new package of COVID-19 relief bills that Senate Democratic leaders rolled out Wednesday."What we know is that this pandemic has had a very disparate impact. It has not treated all Marylanders the same way," Senate President Bill Ferguson said. The new proposals would establish a public health job corps to match unemployed people with jobs associated with COVID-19 testing, vaccinations and tracing.Other proposals would expand telehealth, create an emergency loan program for small businesses, design an Office of Digital Inclusion to ensure everyone has access to broadband internet and increase funding for job training.Another proposal would require the state budget office issue reports on COVID-19 spending."This report must include information related to the amount of federal COVID relief funding distributed to the state and each local jurisdiction, and more importantly, how federal relief funds were allocated to state and local programs," Senate Majority Leader Nancy King said.According to Senate Democrats, the bills are designed to help those impacted the most by COVID-19 get the resources to recover successfully.
