hamas making new demands in hostage talks with israel. what the terror group is asking for as the idf finds another body of a kidnapped israeli in gaza. plus the big diplomatic push continues, president biden meets with his mexican counterpart on migration and fentanyl trafficking. can they find new ways to fight these massive problems. and now nikki haley is on the ground in iowa in her quest to catch up to donald trump. is she the former president's biggest threat? we're following these major developing stories all coming in right here to "cnn news central". we're learning of a new demand. sources now tell cnn hamas is insisting that israel stop flying surveillance drones over gaza as a condition for freeing hostage. this is part of hamas' push for israel to pause its military operations in exchange for people that it is holding captive. and it comes after the idf says two hostages were found dead near al-shifa hospital. the body of a 19-year-old has been returned to israeli territory. all of this unfolding as conditions inside of gaza hospitals continue to worsen. palestinian ministry of health, which is controlled by hamas, says that 41 patients including three premature babies have died in recent days due to lack of electricity at al-shifa. we've learned that two tanker trucks carrying more than 15,000 gallons of diesel fuel have entered gaza. and oren lieberman is live for us in tel aviv. oren, tell us how israel is responding to the drone request here. >> reporter: we learned about this from a source familiar with the negotiations and this came up as part of the attempts to come to a framework agreement and final agreement that would allow for the release of some hostages, women and children, in exchange for a pause in the fighting. in the back and forth, which is largely managed through qatar which is able to have negotiations with hamas, hamas says as part of the pause israel not fly drones over gaza, a condition that we understand is almost completely unacceptable to the israelis. while we were in gaza several days ago and even standing on the outside of gaza, you could hear the constant buzz of drones overhead. and that is because drones are a critical part of israeli operations. they allow a bird's eye view of the battlefield to see where there are potential threats to the troops, where hamas is moving and if there was not the ability to monitor the battlefield during a pause in the fighting then hamas would be able to relocate its own fighters and move hostages around without israel to see. and so that is why israel would most certainly reject that sort of demand. unclear from our sources if hamas removed had demand from the table or if it is still there. a final framework is not in place and hasn't yet come to fruition, sos unclear if this part of the negotiations is still on or has come off, but it gives you a sense of how difficult it has been, the different demands that have come up, the different demand that is have come off to try to get to a final agreement to allow for some hostages to be leased in exchange for the pause in the fighting. >> and we do appreciate that report. let's talk more now about the dire situation facing the gaza hospitals. we've been talking about this for days. we bring in nada bashir. and it is terrible and every day it gets worse. what is happening right now? >> reporter: absolutely. the situation is deteriorating by the hour. al- al-shifa, health authorities say some 41 patients have died the last few days because of the fuel shortages. and hospitals simply are unable to run anymore in northern gaza because they don't have the essential power supplies to keep the hospitals going. as we know the humanitarian situation facing northern gaza in particular hospitals like al-shifa, gaza's largest, is dire to say the least. we've been hearing from medical officials across the board not just inside gaza warning of the situation. we heard earlier this morning from the hospital's director speaking to al jazeera describing the situation saying some patients are now starving, that they don't have the necessary medical supplies to provide adequate care for patients inside al-shifa. other doctors saying that they are carrying out amputations in order to stop the spread of infectious diseases. and of course this situation in al-shifa has really been compounded by this idf raid. they say that it is a targeted localized raid focused on hamas infrastructure, what they claim to be hamas command and control center beneath al-shifa. the idf says it has located operational tunnelling infrastructure. but there is huge concern that this hospital complex is now becoming a battlefield. as we know, there are hundreds of patients still inside al-shifa, hundreds of medical staff and thousands of staff taking shelter at the complex. and we've been hearing from workers warning that they are running out of food and supplies for these civilians. and we're hearing calls for civilians to evacuate southwards, many are saying that it is simply not safe enough outside to begin to evacuate on foot to southern gaza. and many of the patients requiring specialized medical evacuations which have not been guaranteed and of course the fear is that some of these patients will die along the way. and of course as we know the situation on the ground is fraught to say the least. and fuel supplies have quickly run out across northern gaza and running out in southern gaza. and now this evening we're learning according to the israeli government they have approved a measure to allow for at least two fuel tankers to enter gaza every day. but this will be focused on supporting sewage and water supplies. no clear indication this will go towards powering any of these hospitals. and that will be a huge concern. vast majority of northern gaza's hospitals are completely in-operational. but of course as we know hospitals in southern gaza as well are overrun. they are under mounting pressure. and now as there are concerns that this ground incursion by the idf could begin to spread further southwards, there are real fears that for these some 1.5 million palestinians displaced, the majority of them in southern gaza, the situation there is only expected to get much, much worse. the u.n. and other agencies calling for longer pauses, humanitarian pauses in the fighting to allow for essential relief to get into the gaza strip. >> we just saw a report from our colleague company man in a came manno company manna, it is not safe to get out. we saw where a small child was killed. real concerns facing the people there in gaza. ghad basabout a nada bashir, thank you so much for that update. and right now president biden is wrapping up at the apec information recommend in california. it has been a critical week with critical meetings. and today president biden is closing things out by meeting with the mexican president. we have david culver in fran and chief national security correspondent alex marquardt with us. david, let's start with you. what is the sense, was this a success week for the u.s. and the president deliver? >> reporter: certainly the white house is portraying this as a success. they had two major meetings really on the sidelines of. we know with president xi on wednesday and then today with president lopez from mexico. and that focused on immigration and fentanyl. immigration in particular, this is something that is impacting both the u.s. and mexico. and for the u.s., it is obviously showing an influx that is impacting cities across this country. and for the biden administration in particular, it will be critical going in to 2024. because voters are heavily focused on the border crisis, something that they want to see a resolution to. but not as simple to say hey, you need to do something down in mexico. because it is very much impacting the mexican government as well as many cities in mexico. i've spent time in mexico city 500 miles south of the u.s. border. they are also dealing with massive enscampments of migrants, but not only from countries in latin america. i met a group in san diego county the past couple weeks coming over the border and i went around and said where are you all from and i got china, kazakhstan, turkey, the list goes on. so shows you how much of an international crisis this is. no word yet on what specifics are coming out of this meeting bet, but it will take more than just these two countries. and they know that. >> and so we'll wait to hear what came out of the meeting. alex, this is obviously a big meeting on the heels of the big meeting with china. how do you view it in terms of the success for the biden administration with these high level meetings with high stakes? >> i think it is in the context of the two major conflicts that are going on in ukraine and then between israel and hamas. and certainly that conversation with president xi was incredibly important. one of the big successes that came out of that conversation and these meetings, and it was frankly quite a low bar, was to get the chinese and u.s. militaries to be talking again. they hadn't had direct military to military conversations for quite some time. and one of the big priorities for the biden administration is to prevent another war from breaking out around taiwan. and they obviously have limited bandwidth right now and a third war would be extremely distracting and obviously extremely destructive. china has a huge amount of influence of course around the world. and what this meeting with xi really emphasized is that the u.s. and china are really on opposite sides when it comes to both the wars in ukraine and the ongoing israeli operations in gaza. you have china providing material support for russia in the war in ukraine, not weapons are on guns or anything, but they are sending material support to russia. and then when it comes to the war between israel and hamas, we've seen china fail to condemn hamas for the attacks on october 7 that killed more than 1,000 israelis. they have also called for a ceasefire which is something that the u.s. has been rejecting. so this really emphasized that they are on different sides of these two incredibly important conflicts. but when you have china with that influence with russia and across the middle east, it is paramount to have these conversations. because these are the two most powerful countries in the world. >> and you heard president biden for his part saying it is important that we're talking, having straightforward conversations here to prevent any misconceptions or m miscommunication. thanks so much for your perspective alex and david. just ahead, thanksgiving gas prices are set to be the cheapest in years. why they are dropping and how long this could last. plus apple will make a big change next year, what it is doing to make messaging between phones and androids even smoother. and colombian soccer star leads his team to an emotional victory as his father recently freed after being kidnapped watctches from t the stands.s. if you are traveling for thanksgiving, good news. gas prices are down. gas buddy predicting this thanksgiving nanktional averages 3ebegan xgan is joining us live. >> finally good news on a friday. just in time for the holiday travel rush, gas prices are crumbling. just last two months we've seen the national price for a gallon of regular down by more than 50 cents to $3.33 a gallon. look at that chart moving down, down, down. big change from back in september where people were worried about $4 gas. if prices stay near current levels, this would be the cheapest gas price per thanksgiving day since 2020. when of course many people couldn't take advantage of the low gas prices because of covid. now, none of this is to say that gas prices are dirt cheap. they are not. you can see is that back in 2019, they were well below $3 a gallon on thanksgiving day. but this is still very good news and, you know, there are some projections that gas prices could go even lower. gas buddy projecting $3.25 a gallon. that would translate to americans spending $1.2 billion less on fuel this thanksgiving week versus last year. and that is great news and a big boost to consumers right before the holiday shopping season starts. >> could we get maybe to 2 something, you know, what do we have to thank for this? >> i think it is even amazing that we're talking about lower gas prices right now. because when the israel-hamas war started, people were worried about $100 oil. that has not happened. there have not been those supply disruptions. not because people are traveling less. aaa prong achlaa projects just million americans will hit the road this thanksgiving, that is up 2%. but oil prices have plunged because of concerns of oversupply and low demand. now ten states with sub $3 gas including texas, georgia and south carolina. and gas buddy says that there is a growing chance that the national average will go below $3 a gallon before the end of the year. something everyone can celebrate. >> matt, thank you so much for that report. we'll take good news where we can get it. and more good news for frustrated iphone users like myself. i have an iphone, my husband has and an des an android, and we're talking about those green text message bubbles. now apple will do something about it. cnn consumer reporter nathaniel meyersohn is here to explain. so what is apple doing here? >> reporter: yeah, like you i'm an iphone user. when i text somebody and i see that green bubble pop up, i cringe. but starting next year it will be a little smoother for iphone users and android users to text each other. we'll be able to see receipt receipts and texas t with wi-fid see that somebody is typing and sent our locations. so this will be a lot easier next year after a lot of pain between iphone and an sgdroid users. >> so much pain. so will apple keep its bubbles blue, android green, like what will happen here? >> yes, pam, the blue versus green rivalry, it is probably going to be kept the same. apple still going to be in blue and android in green. and just to give you a sense of how many apple and android users there are in the u.s., 57% of smartphone users are on apple's ios system, 43% on android. so certainly in the u.s. apple users have an advantage. but interestingly, globally there are more android users. so more green than blue. >> that is interesting. nathaniel meyersohn, thank you so much. just ahead, with just two months until the iowa caucuses, three republican presidential candidates are in the state right now courting evangelical voters. but not donald trump. we're live from the thanksgiving family forum. you want to be able to provide your child with the tools or resources they need. with reliable internet at home, through the internet essentials program, the world opened up. fellas, fellas. that's how my son was able to find the hidden genius project. we wanted to give y'all the necessary skills to compete with the future. kevin's now part of this next generation of young people who feel they can thrive. ♪ ♪ this just into cnn, the carter center just announced that former first lady rosalynn carter has entered hospice care at home. jimmy carter is also receiving hospice care since february. and let's go to dr. sanjay gupta. what are you learning? >> yeah, pamela, as you mentioned, first of all, former president trump carter, 99 years old, rosalynn carter, 96. and we know that she was diagnosed with dementia back in may. and before that, president carter in home hospice care and now basically saying that rosalynn carter is also entering home hospice care. so they will both be at home receiving care at home, providing more comfort, being able to get medical care at home that they would have otherwise needed to go to the hospital for. that is one of the main focuses of home hospice to try to figure out exactly how aggressive therapy should be going forward. but i think that it is important to keep in mind again if you go back and say that president carter went in february, it is now november, it is not necessarily associated with imminent end of life. i think that is often a misconception of what home hospice is. this is to provide more comfort care and more of that medical care at home for her. and it sounds like that that will start now. >> certainly does. and they have had such a beautiful relationship. married i think close to 70 years. and now, you know, in this final chapter of their lives as they are almost 100, they will be at home together in hospice care. and she had been diagnosed with dementia in may. are you surprised for jimmy carter's part? he is still under that care at home, in it since february. >> i'm not surprised. i think as a doctor, pamela, we know that at some point when a disease or overall someone's health -- we know that they won't recover but at the same time does not mean that things are imminent. that is an important point to stress. but i think that lot of people were surprised because when they first heard the news about former president carter going into hospice care, they thought that meant that we would hear about the fact that he had died sometime soon and it has been several months and i think that that is important to deep in mind for rosalynn carter as well. we don't know if something triggered the need for home hospice or just progression of the symptoms, but of the care that she would have needed can be provided in the home. so that is a sense of comfort in and of itself. >> and the source of comfort that they will have each other for sure. dr. gupta, thank you so much. we'll be right back. right now some of the top republican contenders for the white house are in iowa courting the evangelical vote at an event called the thanksgiving forum. and the man they are trying to beat is not there. donald trump is planning his own campaign event. a recent poll had trump with 43% of iowa caucusgoers. selena treen is following the reaction. are you getting any early reaction to his no-show? >> reporter: we are. i say this, i think the fact that he is dominating so much in the polls is very true for the people who will be in this room shortly when the event starts. the evangelical voters. they came out in big numbers for donald trump in 2016, and in 2020. and largely because of his rhetoric, his pro-life rhetoric on abortion. they also credit him with stocking the supreme court. but he is skipping this famous iowa event and instead choosing to hold his own rally tomorrow in fort dodge. but his absence does give some of his other primary opponents an opening. we'll see ron desantis, nikki haley, vivek ramaswamy all take the stage behind me. and while it will be hard for them to try to eat into donald trump's support, that is why they are here. they have been hitting the ground relentlessly in iowa. and particularly ron desantis who has effectively put all of his eggs in the iowa basket hope that winning potentially here could give the momentum in the other primaries. just one quick thing that i found interesting. democrats are also trying to capitalize on this event. they know that all of the top republican contenders are going to be in iowa, and so they placed a series of billboards across the cityscity attacking candidates on abortion. one specifically going after donald trump saying that he would impose a national abortion ban. of course he has said so far that he doesn't have plans to do so as a candidate. but also attacking the others who will be here today. and i think that that shouldn't be a surprise. democrats see abortion as one of the key issues heading into 2024. but also going to be a key issue at this event starting shortly. >> and we'll be looking for that. a laythank you for that report. and time for a deep dive with two republicans. joe, i'll start but. you have run for president before. and so you have an interesting perspective. what is the significance of this forum that trump is skip something. >> it is a huge deal. this is an evangelical state that is predominantly what the republican vote is in that state. but i'm struck by trump's not there again and it doesn't matter. republican voters are still with him. it is his party. he has not been at a debate and here we are two, three months later, that strategy of trump's, if he does have a strategy, has worked. >> and this event is supposed to be about what is most important to evangelical americans. you heard there about the strong grip that trump still has on the evangelicals in iowa in particular. and yet on the core issue abortion, he sort of back pedaled on that. >> and i think that he realizes that ever since abortion -- overturning roe v. wade and abortion the single issue on the ballot, people that support abortion rights have won out and he recognizes the political liability of this issue since roe v. wade. here is the difference with this issue tonight. as joe knows, this is not a debate, is this a conversation with the candidates. and people in iowa want to talk with them one-on-one in their living rooms and coffee shops. and many are try doing so, many are trying to visit all the 9 county, but this is not as much about policy but about finding out what is in their hearts. and nothing will help a voter connect more than finding out about their character. so the temperature will be much lower at this event, but a good way for them to show where they stand personally on a lot of these issues. the host of the event has supported all of the caucus winners as far back as i can remember and he says this is about showing what is inside the character of these people, but also an opportunity to show a stark contrast with donald trump. he doesn't think that donald trump is the candidate for the republican party in the general, so he wants to show a contrast so people can look at here is the alternative and try to turn the page. >> and everything alice said is exactly correct. and i mean that. >> but. >> but trump's not there and it doesn't matter. everybody there today doing what alice said that they will do, they are all doing it to be the alternative. period. >> and speaking of alternative, right, there is a lot of focus on nikki haley right now. the last debate clearly seemed to give her a boost, but she had already been polling well against biden. in fact in this new poll from marquette law school, haley is beating president biden by ten points in a head to head match-up. and so is she the clear alternative to trump now, what explains her strength in a head to head match-up? >> i think right there is a big argument in favor of looking at the elect ability of the candidates. we know donald trump has a choke hold on the gop, but rational republicans need to look at on who can take on joe biden. and if her numbers are strong that bodes well for her. and what she has done, slow and steady wins the race. you start out with the slow numbers and build momentum. so she's come into second place in new hampshire, she's doing well also in iowa. and here is the thing, she has done really strong debate performances where she has shown command on the issues and she's followed it up with her retail politics. and i think she more than anyone has found the proper positioning on this abortion issue saying look, we need to be truthful with the american people, we need to be rational about this, not demonize the other side, and look at where we can agree on reasonable abortion limits and take it from there. and i think that she's found a good argument for a general election. >> trump is the nominee unless something happens, but alice is right. nicki is the alternative. ron desantis has born out to be a horrible candidate. people don't like him. but the other point is that trump now has kind of punched a hole in that i can't beat biden thing. because recent polls have shown that he is beating biden or very competitive. >> all depends on the poll. >> yeah, the cnn recent poll shows biden at 45% and trump at 49%. >> and so within the margin of error, but i think that that is certainly telling and worthy of focus for sure. joe, alice, thank you both. and just ahead, an nfl sideline reporter is making headlines herself after saying that she made up some of her reports. what she is saying now. big fumble for fox sports reporter carissa thompson. she revealed that she would sometimes fabricate entire nfl sideline reports telling a podcast because the coach wouldn't come out at halftime or it was too late and she didn't want to screw up her report. and now she's tapologizing and trying to walk back the admission. she says i have never lied about anything or been unethical during my time as a sports broadcaster. in the absence of a coach providing any information that could further my report, irld use information that i learned and saw during the first half to create my report. she says i never attributed anything that i said to a player or coach. joining us is christine brennan, a sports columnist. what do you make of her admission and this attempt at clarification? >> this is a mess that she created. totally unnecessary. of course brings scrutiny and criticism on women in sports media. there are thousands of us now doing great work and of course men men who are also sideline reporters. women are known for the job but doing excellent work. they are great reporters, they do everything right. and she has discredited them. and, yes, she has apologized. but the fact that last night she was the host of the amazon prime broadcast and had that national forum to at that point knowing this thing is just exploding to say, hey, i blew it, i'm sorry and say what you just read that she said. and instead she waits 12 more hours. i think that that is unconscionable. and it is just a shame. because instead of talking about all the great things about women in sports media breaking barriers, ceilings, et cetera, something i've cared about very much and work very hard for for years, we're now talking about this which is not reflective of the wonderful women and men in sports media who i know and work with. >> so will the apology be enough? as you detail in your column, what she said on the podcast that she had done is a fireable offense. >> it is. she should have -- before the apology, she should have been fired. obviously fox and amazon did not fire her. you know if you make it up, you are done. and so that is what is troublesome. the apology, take it as face value. she said i'm sorry. period. and it wasn't if i did something, she did do a full apology. the sorry that she says is very different from what she said on podcasts when she was just, you know, yukking it up and having a great time and telling these stories. the damage she's done is to herself and her reputation, i mean who can believe anything that she says. i hope for her that she can recover from this because i would think, you know, you hope that for anyone. but this is a huge mistake and a misstep and something that will not be forgotten i think for a while. >> i think of how many times i toss to a reporter, maybe one of our white house respondents and i say what is the white house reaction. and they may not have it yet and they say we're still waiting to hear. and they say that, and it might be nice to say something to say, but they tell you they don't. and then they might give you some context. something like that. this is sports. but it doesn't matter that it is sports. >> no, and in fact, yes, if the coach walks by you or grimaces, say that. that is interesting to someone who would be -- and i've done some sideline reporting for my day and you have to be prepared. the notes that everyone is descr scribbling, the amount of time that we work on this, there are so many great ones out there who do it the raight way. and when you think of those of us on the print side who double check and listen to it again, that is what people need to know. and i'm afraid what the nation has had is a heavy dose here the last 4 hours of all the bad things in sports journalism versus the good work being done in something as e. you well know that is a huge part of our culture. >> it is big and we rely on it. thank you for being here. and we're into dufsing you to introducing you to the top ten heros. mike goldberg is leading a mission to revive coral reefs suffering from high ocean temperatures. >> reporter: coral reefs without them, nothing is here. simply put, they are what it is that brings the ecosystem together. sadly i've watched us lose that coral reef and disappearance of that diverse marine ecosystem. but then i said i'm going to do something. i truly believe that we'll be successful with this restoration work. i see things every time i go in the water that give me hope. i love being a part of it. i wake up every day and say look what i get to do. >> be sure to go to cnnheroes.com right now to vote for mike for cnn hero of the year or choose your favorite top ten hero. we'll be right back. the power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. and that's a good thing? great in my book! who are you? no power? no problem. introducing storm-ready wifi. now you can stay reliably connected through power outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery back-up to keep you online. only from xfinity. home of the xfinity 10g network. communications in darfur have been actively blocked by the rapid support force who are in a battle for control of the country. >> and a team traveled to the border town where many survivors have fled. and what you are about to hear is very disturbing. >> reporter: one by one survives come forward wanting to share, to document what has happened to them. >> translator: i held my 5-year-old brother and ran to the mosque. they shot at us. a bullet hit my brother's head. the rsf said leave, we'll behind better ones to sell. these ones let's rape them. >> reporter: we interviewed over a dozen survives and eyewitnesses who witnessed the an sbdubduction of 200 other gi. and we were able to identify key neighborhoods where women were being sold from slave houses. survivors say they counted 75 girls abducted in one fell swoop. there is nowhere safe. >> and our chief investigator correspondent is with us. this is not the first time that genocide has stalked the people of darfur. i know that is going to bring a lot back for people. how does this compare? >> reporter: it is so much worse. because the lesson that has been learned by these forces whose leadership were involved in a previous genocide on the assign people in the same region is that they were not held accountable. and so this time, they are unleashed. the idea that one region in one country could see two genocides potentially within the same century, within just two decades, i think that that point you have to ask what is it the world fail to do. clearly it is to hold these men to account. >> and what else -- in the course of your reporting, what stood out to you? you have covered this for so many years. what else should our viewers should know? >> i think the fact that this -- i've been a journalist for 20 odd years. this is probably -- these were among some of the worst systems i have ever heard. there is a young boy in our documentary who is 17 years old, he agree that had we could use an alias. and in fact we insisted to not using hisworried about him, but wanted to show his face because he was not ashamed what have had been done to him. and he was abducted and sold. sounded like something out of a description of slavery in the deep south in the united states, the way his arms were felt, the men that he could hear them discussing whether he looked strong or would he be another useless one. the idea that this is happening right now at this point and the bravery of him for being so sure that not only did he want to tell the world what had been done to him, but he had the maturity and the understanding to know that he had nothing to be ashamed of. >> so much courage. why. nima elbajir, thank you for your report. and tune into an episode of the whole story with anderson
