Brian, do we know any more about the bangs and where this search stands right now . Reporter wolf, we do know that fbi personnel approached this house a short time ago. We just got here. One of our colleagues was here. He said a short time ago, several large bangs came from the house. You can see the roof of the house only over that ridge. What scott us, is a neighbor told him that fbi percentage necessarily, as they approached the house screamed fbi, come out now, and there were large bangs. They could have been flash bangs. Our Josh Campbell said that could be standard procedure when they approach any house. Police and fbi are still at that house, and weve been pushed way back in this perimeter as the Law Enforcement has approached and probably entered the last known address of robert card. This as we get new information how the shooting unfolded and on the manhunt. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Reporter tonight a manhunt, killing 1 people, killing 13 others at two different locations. Hundreds of Law Enforcement personnel looking for the suspect. 40yearold robert card, an army reservist, who spent two weeks in a Mental Health facility this past summer, and is still at large. We believe this is someone who should not be approached. At approximately 6 56, the Auburn 911 Center received a call with a man shooting in the justintime recreation center. Shortly after that, the communications centered received multiple 911 calls about an active shooter inside of a billiards. Reporter shortly after, officials had released a picture. Lewiston Police Received a call identified suspect. Just before 10 00 p. M. , police say they locketed his car. Now, an entire community is left in fear, but asked to shelter in place. Businesses are shut down, schools ordered closed through friday. Witnesses left in shock. She was grazed by a bullet. I never thought i would get a bullet in my leg. Its just like, like, why . Why do people do this . He was holding a weapon. I just booked it down the lane, and slid into where the pins are. Reporter others mourning the lost of family in another sensely shooting. When you get anything that happens like this, you go empty. Theres just nothing, nothing you can do. Reporter many are asking, were Warning Signs missed . According on a National Guard spokesperson, the shooter was reported behave erratically at a facility this past july, and others say he said he was hearing voices. He was transferred to a Army Hospital for a evaluation. Im sure there had be a lot of analysis. Was there something missed . Was he deemed a danger to himself or someone else . Reporter this from a Law Enforcement sort that told cnn a gun was found inside a car connected to the suspect rocket card. That gun is getting traces on it by Law Enforcement. At a time like this, a leader is force to do grapple with things far greater than him or herself. Accountability is sought. In the dangerous world we live in, and my determination to protect my own daughter, because of a false confidence that our community was above this, and we could be in full control among many other misjudgments. You notice call out United States congress to ban Assault Rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of lewiston. For the good of my community, i will work with any colleague to get this done in the time i have left in congress. To the people of lewiston, my constituents throughout the district, to the families who lost loved ones, and to those who have been harmed, i asked for forgiveness, and support, as i seek to put an end to these terrible shootings. On behalf of the 3,000 professionals here, i would also like to extend or deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the events of last night. I would also like to acknowledge the compass and the expertise and the teamwork displayed by the Healthcare Profession a little when called upon under the most extreme circumstances. Just to give you the numbers as we have them now, i know theres been confusion, and i would like to let you know what we dealt with and what we have currently in our hospital. All but one of the patients that are taken from the scenes last night were brought to central maine Medical Center. One was transported directly to st. Marys here. Two patients were treated appeared discharge. One was transferred to maine Medical Center in portland. Three patients unfortunately passed away. Of those eight remaining now, we have five patients who are in stable conditions, three who are in Critical Condition in our Critical Care unit. To give you the sense of the scope what we dealt with in a relatively short period of time, last night within an hour we had six fully staffed appeared running Operating Rooms at center maine Medical Center cares for the wounded and the victims. The professionals operating simultaneously in those six Operating Rooms included orthopedic surgeons, general trauma surging urologyists, Vascular Surgeons as well as anesthesiologists and support personnel. I would also like to express the appreciate for all the support we have received, first from the city of lewiston, secondly from Law Enforcement. The other area hospitals that came to our support. We needed blood transferred to central maine Medical Center very quickly. Two of the hospitals accommodated us. Maine med in portland stood by, and was ready to accept patients, and they did accept warmup patient we transferred to them. Also the veriary Community Partners that came to aid and support us last night, including Emergency Response personnel, personnel from lifeflight of maine and others. As one of the counselor said to me before we walked in tonight, often people underestimate or capabilities here to care for people locally. I think last night we proved by working together we can do that under the most trying of circumstances. Thank you. Well take a few questions. [ Inaudible Question ] reporter senator, we just heard from the representative that he has changed his mind on a ban. Will you do the same . First of all, let me say that i think it is more important that we ban very highcapacity magazines. I think that would have more input and more effectiveness. We have an Assault Weapon ban, which john supported, that was in effect for ten years. It applied to, i believe, 17 or 19 styles of weapons. Later, the late senator Dianne Feinstein proposed an expansion that would have covered 157 weapons. It was based not on functionality, but on the cosmetic features. So, theres always more that we can do, i was a coauthor of the bipartisan Safer Communities act, which provided funding, for example, for red and yellow flag laws. And for Mental Health clinics, which i think is important as well. So certainly theres always more that can be done. Reporter the proposed legislation that limited action to expanded stocks and firearms, capacity. Are you suggesting that you would do Something Different now . I dont believe youre correct. For example, i was the lead republican sponsor of a bill that would ban bump stocks, which had the ability to turn the semiautomatic into a fully automatic machine gun. That legislation has not been enacted into law. There was an attempt to do it by regulation, but it was struck down by the courts. I still support the bump stock legislation. The other thing that i think we can look at is and i advocated was to increase the age at which you can purchase a highcapacity rifle from 18 to 21, the way it is for a handgun. Reporter senator, you mentioned there are a lot of questions about the whereabouts of robert card. You mentioned a number of agencies searching for him. Can you offer any more details regarding the whereabouts of carter, if were get close to finding him . I cannot, because i dont want to jeopardizes the search for him in any way. I have talked extensively to Law Enforcement, and as i said just very recently with the fbi deputy director. But, i certainly dont want to jeopardize the search in any way. Reporter you are a big advocate of im sorry, i couldnt [ Inaudible Question ] to my i dont know, thats a very good question. [ Inaudible Question ] maine does have a good yellow flag. Reporter is it true, as we are hearing that robert card had Mental Health issues, and was reported for evaluation, you got it wrong. I dont know whether there was a report to trigger the yellow flag law. Its certainly on the face of the facts that we have, it seems could you let me finish, please it certainly seems that on the basis of the facts that we have, that the yellow flag law should have been triggered, if in fact the suspect was hospitalized for two weeks for Mental Illness. That should have triggered the yellow flag law, and he should have been separated from his weapons. Im sure, after the fact, thats going to be looked at very closely. Obviously thats a state issue, and i do not have knowledge of what happened in that instance. Reporter Senator Collins, thank you for your time. I wonder if i can ask about the weapons again. Why do you think it is that you and so many others in north america, believe it is right for americans to have the right to own such highvelocity weapons . Well, first of all, let me say, and ill repeat it again, that for ten years we had a ban on certain kinds of Assault Weapons, and i supported that ban. When george w. Bush proposed that it be extended for ten more years, i supported that effort, which did not succeed. Later, years later, there was an attempt by former senator Dianne Feinstein to greatly expand the number of weapons that would be covered by that ban, and it was based not on lethality, but more on how they looked on cosmetic features. I did not think that that was appropriate. We do have a Second Amendment in our country and reporter the rights to own a weapon that powerful . Maine, i would point out, has one of the highest rates of Gun Ownership in the country and has a long heritage of responsible Gun Ownership. It has also had a very low rate of violence. What makes this crime so heinous is, in a typical year, maine might have 22 murders, and last night we almost approached the number for the entire year. [ Inaudible Question ] thank you so much. We appreciate your patience with us, and thank you all. Thank you. So we heard senator Susan Collins given her thoughts on strengthening the Gun Control Laws here in the United States. I want to bring in analyst john miller, who is working his sources. Give us, first of all your analysis on what we just heard from these maine officials . I think the discussion has started in a state with a leading republican senator about gun control, but Mental Health issues, about red flag laws, about yellow flag laws. We go through this discussion every time we have one of these shootings, and as Senator Collins pointed out herself, even after the las vegas sniper sho shooting, which was a horrific attack where heil used Basicalla Machine Gun with the use of a bump stone, which gives it continuous fire, when she was one of those that tried to outlaw the sale of those, that bill is still sitting in congress. So we still live in a country where Gun Ownership seems to take precedence over these Public Safety issues that keep rearing their heads again and again and again with the loss of so many lives. Looking back on this individual, this suspect, john, there were plenty of Warning Signs out there that could have resulted potentially, if the law would have allowed it, for him to not necessarily get an Assault Weapon. In all likelihood, he had those weapons before. He never had really had a runin with the law, no criminal background. He had a Drink Driving Arrest back in 2007. Other than that, a good citizens and a Citizen Soldier in the Army Reserves for 20 years, an excellent markman, a hunter, a fisherman, somebody who enjoy the country up there in maine, but this summer, he had a Mental Health episode. He said he heard voices when at camp smith in New York State at a training exercise. Its where he said he was having feelings about hurting other soldiers. He got that command refer to a medical facility where they did two weeks of observation, treatment and decided he was okay to go, and continue treatment outside. Thats where we lose track of him, except we know this. He had that crisis over the summer. He then lost a job. He then lost his girlfriend, and we have learned by following the case, talking to people involved in the investigation and those briefed on it that the places he went to shoot last night, the Bowling Alley, was a place he often went with his girlfriend when they were together. The bar was a place where, we are told, she was expected to be in a game tournament that night at the bar, which was employees night, where they get a 25 discount if they work in bars and restaurants. So they gather a crowd on that wednesday night. These were the places he targeted. So it is possible that, with the crisis he had over the summer, the loss of the job, the loss of that relationship, those were the three stressors that pushed him over the edge. The difference is hes a highly trained, excellent marksman on the run. What we just saw there, where my good colleague brian todd was, this is a place that had connections to him. He had actually registered a jet ski at that address not that long ago. Neighbors say they hadnt seen him around. When the fbi is doing an entry where he may be inside, where they havent seen him come out, theyve had it under surveillance. Theyll go in with a dynamic entry. Flash bangs, announce fbi that theyre coming in, do the things that would disorient a subject. So theyre not phasing a guy that may still have an aris a style of weapon. So theyre looking for any evidence that can give them a lead on where he is. I want you to stand by, john, but i want to bring in senator chris murphy of connecticut. Hes been outspoken on the issue of guns in american. Thank you, senator, for joining us, for this awful, awful tragedy in maine. U. S. Has now gone through 566 Mass Shootings just this year, according to the gun violence archive. Whats going on now . How do you see this unfolding . Well, my heart is breaking for lewiston and the community. Obviously, in connecticut we have gone through a horrific version of this in newtown. I mean, listen, this is just ridiculous. Why on earth does this country extend a Permission Structure that hands them military weapons. It is not a coincidence that every single one of these individuals, mostly men who are having breaks with reality grab the same exact weapon. Why . Because these are weapons designed to kill 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 people as quickly as possible. We dont allow them for sale in connecticut, but i tell you, i dont run into a lot of hunters or sportsmen in connecticut. I dont run into people who feel they could defend their homes because they simplyic buy an Assault Weapon. Its difficult to find these straws in a stack. Its tyke for my republican colleagues to wake up. Thats where the American Public is. I wish it was where my rep colleagues were in the senate and in the house. Jared holden of maine just spoke. I want to play a key moment from his remarks. Listen to this, senator. There have been Deadly Weapons of war to carry out this crime. The time has come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why i now call on the u. S. Congress to ban Assault Rifles, like the one used by the sick perpetrator of these killings in my hometown of lewiston. I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time i have left in congress. Senator, what do you make of that . I dont know the representative personally. I know hes a pretty conservative member of the house of representatives. Hes coming to the same reality that many others, that these weapons dont deserve to be on the streets of america. You can probably the peoples Second Amendment rights, but make she is they dont have access to weapons of war. I wish it didnt take Members Of Congress to have to experience a mass shooting in their own district. Im glad hes made this decision, but why does it have to happen over and over and over again, to have these conversions . This is what america wants. Its time that we get it done. We would save a ton of lives if we said, you know what . These weapons belong in the hands of Law Enforcement and the military, not in the hands of civilians. What do you think the current prospects are for legislation . Do you think the prospects are good it could pass the congress right now . Are you encouraged by what you heard from Congressman Golden . Certainly encouraged. I dont disagree what with what my senator of colleague, Senator Collins, noted at this conference. We did have a Safer Communities act, a bill i wrote. It was opposed by the nra. We got republican votes for it. Murder rates have dropped by double digits, 12 in the biggest cities across this country, but Mass Shootings havent dropped. Because of these shooters have access to Assault Weapons, can carry out these crimes. I think its probably not likely were going to pass an aall the weapons ban while republicans are in charge of the United States house of representatives. I dont know the new speaker, i dont know his views on guns. Ill cross my fingers and hope hes reasonable, but there probably will be some elections to of to pass Something Like what representative golden is calling for. We know the suspect, senator, was suffering from Mental Illness. Many republicans have now responded by that shows wee dealing with a Mental Health crisis in our country, as opposed to a gun violence crisis. How do you respond to that . Its just not true. We have a Mental Health crisis in this country, no do you about it, but we adopt have a bigger crisis than in other countries. Theres no evidence theres more Mental Illness than in European Countries or asian countries, no evidence that we spend less month on treating Mental Illness, so why do we have a Gun Violence Rate 125 times hire . Why . Because people having a break from reality in this country can easily, like getting a bottle of water, get their hands on a military Assault Weapon. Other countries dont allow that to happen. The difference, the reason why america is a more violent place is not back we just dont care about stopping people with serious Mental Illness or criminal records from getting guns like other countries do. If we changed that, with he would see a dramatic reduction in the number of homicides and Mass Shootings that we see. People all over the world are watching and wondering whats going on right now. They say that every time theres a mass shooting and nothing much happens to change the law. Senator chris murphy, thank you for joining us. I want to bring in more of our experience right now in andrew mccabe. What stood out from you with these maine officials . You know, i think what youre seeing is what we have freblgtly see in the immediate aftermath of a horrible, violent gunfueled disaster in this country. You see senators who are all of a sudden very aware of the positions they have taken in the past that have not helped this situation. It is remarkable that the congressman has pledged to change his position, but quite frankly, the prospects are bleak for any sort of meaningful change with respect to thing that most almost all americans support, University Background checks, reasonable age limits for, you know, people purchasing things like highcapacity rounds, militarystyle weapons, things of that nature. Returning to some degree of an Assault Weapon ban. You know, we have a congress that can barely elect its own speaker after many weeks. So we have seen many, many horrendous guntiled tragedy. None of them have been enough to compel our lawmakers to make meaningful change, so its hard to under how this one would be that moment. Jennifer, are an expert on this issue. What questions remain about maines laws around gun safety right now . Well, the question is, with the democratic trifecta in the statehouse for the last five years, why havent they passed stronger gun laws . Theyre one of the weakest, most Permissive Gun Law States in the northeast. Theres no universal background check. Theres no red flag law. But its been lucky so far. Theyve never had a major public mass shooting like this. Theres a number of factors that go into that. Its a sparsely populated state, very homogenous, more long guns than handguns because of rich hunting tradition, but someone in lewiston said the only reason it hasnt happened here is because weve been lucky, thats it. This proves that this kind of gun violence is leave no corner of the country untouched. I had several questions about whether, you know, this shortterm Mental Health observation was enough to trigger a gun ban. Its possible it wasnt. Its possible it did trigger a gun ban. Its also possible that american has seen how difficult it is to separate guns from people in crisis. You need specific laws to do that. Interesting. Chief ramsey, youre the former d. C. Police chief, you know a lot about these situations. Its been, what, nearly 24 hours since the shootings in maine actually occurred. Is it likely the suspect, you believe, is still in the area . I really dont know. I mean f. Theyre continuing to devote their resources in that area. Obviously theyre going to have more information than we have available to us. Nighttime is upon us now, so being ability to search a heavily wooded area like that in darkness is not something you would want to do, not again someone who is heavily armed as this individual. We dont know if hes in that area or not, but they have to go under the assumption assumption he is right now. I dont believe they have any evidence to show hes got beyond the search area. As you mentioned, its fuel that is reaching an absolute crisis play now. The primary u. N. Agency that works inside of gaza saying that they have already started to ration the fuel, theyre stretching it out, theyve had to limit supplies of that fuel to hospitals and two bakeries. And they will be forced if they dont get more fuel to completely suspend their operation tomorrow. We also asked them about the idfs allegations that during the last three weeks hamas has stolen fuel from these u. N. Warehouses. They said they have no knowledge of that having happened. Even if it had happened the emphasis is still on israel now to allow fuel and to prevent humanitarian catastrophe and stop people from dying which is what will happen, wolf, when the generators can no longer keep the incubators, ventilators, the Salah Nation Plans going, wealth. I saw this little girl running over, it was the neighbors girl, i recognized her with my youngest son, shes in kindergarten, she came running over and she was covered in blood, i picked her up i could see it wasnt her blood. But you know she was all read, i took are. I realize Something Real wrong was going on, it wasnt the usual rockets we get on the kibbutz, something very different. I took her over, gave her over to my wife and headed over to see how i can help in the kibbutz. And thats when i lost touch with my family, my wife went into the safe room, we have a safe roam in the house, she locked herself in along with my three children, and this girl that i found. I was trying to do something to help and i got injured, a shrapnel hit me and i could not move, i sat down and waited for someone to rescue me. And going through this i was texting my one life, i can only taxed, the winds were down, she told me everything is fine, everything is fine, and around 11 a. M. It was the last text i got.
