We begin with fears of violence against Georgia Grand Jurors whose names and addresses were apparently posted online just days after they indicted donald trump. Authorities now investigating the threats and working to keep them safe. Paula reid is on the story. Give us the latest. Weve learned that on monday, when former President Trump was supposed to hold a Press Conference to amplify his baseless claims of voter fraud, but sources they thats unlikely to happen now because his advisers, who are of course negotiating the terms of his surrender in georgia, have suggested an event like that could increase his mounting legal problems. Because i have four of them now. Tonight, former President Trump reacting to his georgia indictment for the first time on camera and calling for his party to come to his defense. They have no idea the anger they cause. The republicans have to be tough. The republicans are great in many ways but they dont fight as hard for this stuff and they have to get a lot tougher. This Call To Action comes as the georgia residents who served on the grand jury that indicted trump for trying to overturn the 2020 election are facing threats and even getting doksed online. These people were called to serve and do their civic duty by serving on that grand jury and now theyve been basically put on the ax by these disclosures. Names, pictures, profiles, and even Home Addresses purporting to belong to the grand jurors are now circulating on far right websites like forchan and other platforms. Their names were published on page nine of the indictment. A Public Document as is the practice in georgia. But experts say this is really a quirk of law in the state of georgia that the names of grand jurors come out with the indictment. So this is really the first time weve seen this kind of thing come out in a national case. What im going to do cnn cannot independently verify the details and its unclear if the information circulating online is that of the actual grand jurors or just people of the same name. Former Georgia State senator and attorney, jen gerden, testified in this case and she says these thr threats might impede prosecutors ability to find a trial jury. Everyone is going to know who they are. Their lives are going to be turned upside down. So just to be able to sit a jury of people who would be even willing to put, you know, their lives on the line. Is going to be really, really difficult. And its not just the grand jury under threat. Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the federal election interference case against trump, received a threatening voice mail earlier this month. According to court documents, a texas woman called chutkans chambers on august 5th and left a message threatening to kill anyone who went after President Trump. She also threatened to kill Sheila Jackson lee as well as people in the lgbtq community. She is now in custody. Thank you very much. Over the last week, trump has repeatedly posted to social made area, speaking directly to the Fulton County grand jurors and judge chutkan, saying will someone please tell the Fulton County grand jury that i did not tamper with the election . And saying that chutkan obviously wants me behind bars. Very biased and unfair. The Fulton CountySheriffs Office has responded with a statement saying quote, we take this matter very seriously and are coordinating with our Law Enforcement partners to respond quickly to any credible threat to ensure the safety of those individuals who carried out their civic duty. Wolf, they say they are trying to track down the origin of these threats against those grand jurors. Very scary. Stay with us. Want to bring in another journalist and analyst into this conversation. Andrew mccabe, let me start with you, the former Deputy Director of the fbi. Do you worry these threats that are emerging could have a Chilling Effect on other witnesses and jurors that may be called to deal with this case . Of course it could, wolf. So, these grand jurors are called to serve for several months to review numerous cases. These 26 folks have the opportunity to review and consider and vote on the case against donald trump. They did not sign up for a lifetime or several years worth of Security Details and wondering about whos going to show up at their house in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, thats the reality theyre looking at. And you have to think that that sort of Terror Bleeds over into the consciousness of folks who are called to be witnesses in these cases, folks who are called to jury duty. And of course, grand juries for the near future. Yeah, its a really, really horrible situation. And tia mitchell, thanks for coming in. Judge esther solace, whose son was murdered at her home by a Gunman Targeting her not that long ago spoke about the need to protect identifying information earlier today. Listen to this. I can tell you that i speak as a judge who knows firsthand what will happen when we dont secure personally identifiable information like Home Addresses. I can tell you firsthand the pain i deal with every morning when i wake up and i have to think about life without my only child. We need to make sure that we protect those that are just doing their jobs and in this case, judges do their jobs and we need to be able to do our jobs without fear of retaliation, retribution, or death. Very powerful words, indeed. Our heart goes out to her. What do you make of that . I think its just sad that it has to be an either or scenario where its either you shield information about legal proceedings, which could lead to you know, questions about transparency. We see that with our Election System in the polarization, that sometimes lack of transparency allows people to further undermine the integrity of our systems but if the other side is being transparent about things like who serves on grand juries, judges, that could lead to their safety being jeopardized. So the question is why is it that in america, we cant be transparent and know who our grand jurors are and not have them feeling like their life is at risk in the process. To me, thats the question. Its a good question. How do you see it . Well, i think that this episode, this chapter in the life of our nation, has produced certainly extremely disturbing events but also great heroes and theyre not just the, and republican heroes who stood up to this, that also comes out of fani willis charges. Republican governor kemp, republican Secretary Of State brad raffensperger, our colleague, jeff duncan. But the ard ordinary people, to. How heroic is it that the regular georgians were willing to sit on those grand juries knowing that under georgia law, you must publish the names of the grand jurors. I think the forceful Law Enforcement response, including the arrest apparently properly so of this woman in texas who issued the threat against judge chutkan is a reassuring message to us. You can do your duty. Its safe. The system will have your back. Its unfortunate but there is that element of american patriotism that emerges from these tragic stories. Very tragic, indeed. Andrew, let me get back to you. I want to play a clip from what the trump Attorney General, bill barr, hes been a strong critic of trump lately, what he had to say about the georgia case just a little while ago. Im not happy with the georgia case. I think its much too sweeping, too broad. Excessive case that is make it look like people are piling on and being excessive to trump and feed the narrative that hes being victimized here. I also think theres merit in the point that this is a case, i dont think its going to be tr triable before the election. How do you respond . I agree with his comments on timing. I think this case is too complicated to squeeze in before the election, but ill tell you this. I think what weve learned from this process is that the states have a compelling interest in protecting their essential role in our National Election process. If the dually elected prosecutor of Fulton County sees an opportunity to enforce the state law against a former president and his allies who conspire to overturn the results of that state election, then she has an obligation to do so. I think shes done so in a convincing and clear way that indictment is replete with facts and numerous witnesses and clearly past the standard of probable cause thats necessary to bring this charge and have it heard by a jury of the former president s peers. So i have no complaints with what theyre doing in georgia. As you know, the negotiations are ongoing between trump, his lawyers and the georgia authorities over his surrender. How thats going to unfold. Were hearing its not solid yet. And theres a lot wrapped up in that. There are rumors could he turn himself in at the same time as the Republican Debate as counterprogramming. There are rumors that perhaps this Press Conference on monday that he initially floated, how will that play into the charges he faces in georgia. At the end of the day, the deadline is august 25th for him and the 18 other Co Defendants to report to the Fulton County jail. That Press Conference may go away. His lawyers clearly dont want him to do it. Could be very, very legally problematic for him, right . Yeah. Absolutely. Were learning more and more about how many people in his inner circle are in legal trouble. We just published a story on cnn. Com, trying to identify the Co Conspirators in georgia. After the fire, his father found his brothers body in the burned rubble of the home. We saw where he always slept. What he had seen was not just a body but the body of a 15yearold kid who had way more life ahead of him. Then they took his remains to authorities. Jose is now turning his pain into poetry. What could i do, no power i hold, im lost and im found. Im lost all around. Were losing a town. The sheer scale of the devastation has impacted everyone on the island. No one has ever seen this that is alive today. Not this size, not this number. Not this volume. Were not done. Identifying the dead remains a difficult task. There are often in fingerprints and many remains are unrecognizable. Relatives of the missing are being asked for dna samples. The search teams are also deeply affected. We have to do this right and realize that the responders going out there are recovering their loved ones. The members of their families. The teams are searching more than 2,000 homes and businesses as the magnitude of the loss sinks in. Its hard to take in. Even as authorities delicately search the rubble for human remains, some residents say theyve been approached by real state speculators. Its a different model. Its a strategic shift in the area because the whole effort by china was never allowed this pro process to happen. This is a major accomplishment for President Biden, for americas message in the region that were a permanent Pacific Power and all our allies and friends have taken note that this is a further commitment of america that we are a permanent power and presence in the pacific and were going to make sure that china doesnt act anything untethered. But there is concern this summit alone and the declaration that emerges could push russia, china, and north korea closer together. First of all, before the summit, that was already happening. I think what this does is add on the political diplomatic front, it embraces deterrence in its full scope. Deterrence is not just a military piece. I think thats on a different set of track and a different condition. Thats not an expertise i have as it relates to north korea. I think its a factor, but i wouldnt, my own calculation is its not the biggest factor. I think north koreas going to make a decision independent of this. How worried are you about china taking action towards china, the philippines or elsewhere in the region . Again, nobody knows where deterrence ends and provocation begins but this is an event that shifts the strategic plates in the region in a significant way in favor of the United States, japan, and korea. I think this adds a level of deterrence. As i said, i would not only think of it from a military standpoint. I would have a wider lens interpretation. This brings a political diplomatic effort. Its going to have a lot of complications not only only intelligence, military front, training front, cybersecurity front, on the kind of political act together and we could have three individual voices or one giant collective voice that speaks clearly when it come to freedom, laws, and rules. Take a sledgehammer to fake vivak. Vivak the fake. What does it say to you about the state of Desantis Campaign that hes seen as a serious threat . Well, i cant tell if this stuff that was leaked was leaked for the purpose of giving desantis advice or for the purpose of providing misdirection to the other campaigns, perhaps trying to get them to prepare for something they think desantis might do then he goes in a different direction. Ill well find out next wednesday. But theres one thing thats true about rahm. He has caught up in some of these surveys. Not in all of them, but you can see in handful of these surveys, hes moving up the list. Hes got a Great Communications ability. I would say on the debate stage, its rahm and Chris Christie, who may be the most Communications Talent oriented candidates up there. So obviously, people are watching him move up and there are some people who think desantis needs to fight him off to maintain his second place status. Well you know, i think we havent even talked about the piece of the memo that underscores desantis biggest problem, which is that he apparently has to be directed by his superpac to express emotion when telling a story about his family. For desantis, he is in a box here. If he is now, if he now chooses to follow some of this advice, then it underscores the biggest doubt voters have about him. Which is that hes not authentic. Able to connect. Hes not genuine. If he doesnt follow the advice, youre going to have folks in the media tearing him apart for not taking the advice. I think what theyve done here is sort of pigeon hole their candidate in a really problematic way. I think the other big question for ron desantis and the other candidates on that stage is are they going to take on trump directly. The dynamics of this race arent going change until some take him on directly. Youve seen desantis lately try to pivot out of, sorry, pivot into more direct criticism. My question on that would be who is the audience in the republican primary debate for that argument. Youre either defending trump or youre attacking him. And being in this weird space in between doesnt really get you credit with any of the voters in the republican party. So its going to be interesting to see what desantis and other republicans decide to do in terms of taking trump on in that debate. It would be very interesting, indeed. Lawyers for former President Trump have just proposed a date for the start of his trial on federal charges stemming from accusations he sought to overturn his 2020 election loss to democrat, joe biden. Paula is following this for us. Tell us what youre learning. The trump attorneys are requesting a date of april 2026. That would be three years after he was indicted. Again, this is the Special Counsels prosecution that is narrowly focused on the former president and while they do identify others, he doesnt have any other Co Defendants. Its unclear why they would argue they would need three years for this trial, but right now, the Special Counsel has actually requested they want to take this case to trial early next year. So the very beginning of january. And now it will be up to judge Tanya Chutkan to figure out a schedule. Special counsel has argued its in the Public Interest for this case to be brought before the 2024 election and the former president s lawyers have argued that it would be unfair to put him on criminal trial because hes a candidate for the presidency. So it is really going to be a big test for judge chutkan. We know the other Special Counsel prosecution that is currently scheduled for midway through next year in may. But its unclear if that trial date is going to hold. So shes going to have a tough time finding room on the calendar. Its a very crowded schedule. We have a criminal prosecution in manhattan in late march. He has a civil trial early next year then you have the other Special Counsel prosecution. So shes going to have to find some time but one thing i was in court with judge chutkan and the lawyers from both sides a few days ago. She appears to want to move this along pretty quick will i.
