>> a 21-year-old man murdered eight people at a local spa. the terrifying 911 call made by one woman inside one of those spas. >> hurry. >> do you have a description of him, ma'am? >> i am hiding right now. >> is it a male or female. >> they have a gun. >> a gun that killed eight people including six asian women. here are the names of the dead we know so far. age 33, yong, paul an andre michels age 54. yan age 49, daoyou feng at 44. >> very concerned. i have been speaking about brutality against asian americans the last couple of months, it is very very troublesome. i am making no connection at this moment of the killer. i am waiting for an answer as the investigation proceeds from the fbi and from the justice department. >> we are all waiting. in the meantime the fear among asian americans in this country is growing. crimes against asians in america have spiked during the pandemic. 150% in antiasian hate crimes in major u.s. cities in 2020 while overall hate crimes fell by 7%. tonight communities across the country are grieving as police in atlanta still trying to piece together what happened. ryan young is "out front" in atlanta tonight. tell us what you know of the horrific act happened in that community where you are right now. >> reporter: absolutely, erin, i can tell you the names and faces that's killed are sticking with the hearts and minds of so many people. more than a dozen people show up here to either put a message down or drop flowers off. there is been a lot of conversations here about why this had to happen. a lot of questions in the community about how to protect people around this area to make sure this never happens again. >> reporter: shock and outraged in atlanta, georgia, across the nation after eight people have been dead. robert arron long, the suspect. it is too soon to call his motive a hate crime. >> according to investigators, the suspect described as temptations as he wanted to eliminate. >> he made indicators that he has some issues potentially sexual addiction and may haves frequent some of these places. >> police say long was kicked out of the house by his family due to his sexual addiction. a former roommate tells cnn he spent time in rehab for sexual addiction last year and he was deeply religious and tortured by it. >> some guy came in and shoots the gun. some ladies got hurt. i think, and everybody's scared and hiding. >> i talked to one of the ladies and she said to him, hey, shot, shot. gun, gun! > >> reporter: five people were shot of two dying at the scene. at 5:47 at northeast atlanta, three people shot dead and another killed at an aroma therapy spa. >> as tragic as it was yesterday and metro atlanta, this could have been a significantly worse. >> reporter: authorities say they captured long 150 miles south of atlanta after tracking his phone. he was on his way to florida where he may have planned to continue his journey. >> reporter: police found a 9 millimeters handgun which he told authorities he purchased just this week. attacks on asian americans have arise. they have received nearly 3800 firsthand complaints. >> and i think it is something that we should remember that family members were the ones who help police put this all together and being able to track them so they're able to make that stop about two hours away from here and to tell you the spa which is right here. the other spas where the shooting was was just across the street over there. this is where people had been coming all day long. the first court appearance happens tomorrow and people want to hear in court what he says to in investigators so they know why. >> thank you very much. "out front." demo democratic bi nguyen is speaking with me. are you learning anything new tonight? >> i want to start off by saying when we learned about this last night, we were horrified and the feeling that i had was this had to be a crime related to aapi hate. as we have learned details of the event unfold, i believe this is a racially motivated crime. we know as much as what news outlets are reporting. this happened at three different asian businesses. one of them is vietnamese owned. we know six asian women were killed and we know of the women killed at least four of them were korean decent. we have been working with community leaders to try to connect with families and assess what their needs are. making sure we are really listening to the community and not just responding in a knee jerk way. a lot of times in these circumstances, the response increase law enforcement but the conversations we had are our communities much like across our state, we don't always hfeel sae with increase of law enforcement. there is also some questions ar around citizenship. >> let me ask you, the suspect claims the shooting were not racially motivated and police repeated that. we are waiting for more information. as you pointed out eight people were shot at asian massage parlors and spas and six of them were asian women. is fear dproeing in the community tonight? >> absolutely. this fear has been prevalent in the last year since we have seen the spike of hate crimes. 150% crimes increased. it has beenover looked nationally and our state. we start to see the violent crimes against our elderly. on the west coast and now it is hitting so close to home. there is a lot of fear in the community. not just because of the hate crimes that have happened over the last year. our messaging of hate by the former president. there is a lot of history of asian american violence in this country. >> many of our families and grandparents experienced that. >> the targeting asian americans after seven. this is not new but the fact it increased and hit so close to home, it is all hitting us. >> why do you think the hesitancy to call it hate crime. if we can acknowledge that if a different dpgroup were targeted people would call it as hit crime. why do you think the hesitancy. >> i think this country has a reluctant to admit there is real and deep rooted systematic racism in violence. in this particular case, the victims were asian women. we have also seen historically where news outlets and the police frame the story around the perpetrator and now we are hearing of the suspect in custody and we are hearing stories how he suffers from a declaration of independence addiction and it is houmanizing it. >> thank you so much bee nguyen, i appreciate your time. i am so glad you joined us and sorry on the circumstances. so greg, representative nguyen playing this without, right? it is like, threats are there and it is happening and yet it still happens. >> well, look, things don't happen in a vacuum, attacks against asians are happening and they have been happening all over this country. this terrorist in atlanta knew what he was doing. the people who are attacking asians know what they doing. our intelligence communities to start rooting this out. >> a lot of people link the rising in asian americans to the rhetoric from former president trump. the reality is we have seen that 150 percent surge over hate crimes against asians. last night when we found out about this horrific attack, the former president went on fox news and called the coronavirus the china virus. that's what he did knowing this happened and he repeated slurs, kung-flu and china virus. we still see this rising now. what do you make of that? >> first of all, i can't stand talking about donald trump anymore but as you said he just called covid-19 the china virus again last night and now eight people are dead. >> you know so much about this lisa, you talk about people that look like you but that's not why you know this. obviously you have a personal relationship. you have done so much reporting and you have done reporting on massage parlors. you detail the dangers that these women face every single day across the country. did you ever think that you would see something like this?
