U. S. Economy unprecedented move secretary of state pompeo in israel, making a controversial visit to settlements in the occupied west bank these are impressive times. Reporter r. Plus, how the new work from home culture is pressing many people to take a permanent vacation. Announcer live from nbc global heads, the fact, the news with shepard smith. Good evening. The coquid predictions are all coming true, more people are sick, hospitalized and dying than ever before 252,290 americans killed like 849 11s, double the american death toll in the first world war. Doctors and scientists warn that every day ahead will likely be morse. More of everything will shut down, bringing business failures, jobs lost, and no relief from congress in the works. Our lives will be up ended in ways we can foresee and in others we cannot yet imagine says one Missouri Health director you will meet live tonight, we can keep up. Its an uncontrolled spread. Warnings and more warnings what else can we try amber elliot says she quit her job to protect her family, and tomorrow is her last day reality is harsh and stark but come spring and summer, we get to be in a better place. When with vaccines everything can rebuild. So heres our plan for this newscast in short, problem, impact, cure. We will present covid truth in detail we will lay out the implications for business and economy, and well report on the exciting new advances in treatment and vaccines with an eye toward the time after this hill we have to get to spring and summer to enjoy it many of us will not. And many who do will suffer matily along the way we all have choices, and the ones we make will shape our future so lets get to it the u. S. Added another 170,000 cases just yesterday, the second highest total since the pandemic began, according to johns hopkins. In some states, the percentage of people testing positive is staggering 50 in iowa. 56 in south dak prescott. 61 in wyoming the highest in all the nation. Local lead remembers rushing to issue new restrictions. Just last hour, the California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a limited stayathome order across the golden statement he says it starts on saturday and will last for a monday it comes as Los Angeles County reports more than 5,000 cases an yowl time high in riled, the governor announ announcing a two week statewide pause starting november 30th he says it is meant to stop hospitals from being overrun minnesota ordering bars restaurants and gyms to shut down for four weeks starting tomorrow the new today, the cdc urging americans, do not travel for thanksgiving the cdc advising all of us to limit gatherings to those within our same household it comes as governors from seven states both democrats and republicans wrote a Washington Post op ed calling on americans to stay home this holiday. New mexicos Governor Phil Murphy echoing that today telling people to stay within their bubbles. He joins us now. Governor murphy, more than 2,400 people in your state are hospitalized with covid. Thats the most since june we all lived through those terrible months back in march and april, everybody stuck inside constant sirens. Do you believe, governor murphy, that we can breechbt that this time good to be with you shep. I hope so, but its too early to tell, to be frank with you i think we are staring at a very tough couple of months here. I agree with your comments about the horizon, which looks very bright, particularly with a lot of really good vaccine news of late we certainly know a lot more about this virus than we did in the spring we have many more capacities from ppe to beds to testing. But theres a lot of fatigue theres a lot of transmission in private settings we have got the holidays before us we are pleading with people to not let their guard down, to stay strong. This virus is dying for us, literally, to let our guard down we have got to do everything we can to push back at that. Governor, schools across the country, and some in your state, have gone fully virtual. In europe they have closed bars to keep the schools open here we are doing the opposite thing. Why is keeping schools open not the top priority in this country . I can speak for new jersey, certainly, and it is a top priority for us. But your bars are open. Your schools are closed, your bars are open. Thats not true with all due respect we have got 800 or 900 districts. 500 and something are virtual. 160 something are remote about 100 are full all in. Another three dozen are a combination. We have been that way since new york since the beginning. We have been working with each district on an individual basic. The inschool experience in new jersey so far has been very, very good. So long as we can stay safe and responsible we want to keep high quality and hopefully inperson education as long as week. Every doctor i talked to says thanksgiving scares the hell out of them. Your fellow Health Director wrote this op ed in the Washington Post, stay home at thanksgiving how are you do that . We have limited indoor activities to ten people at most we have cut restaurants at 10 00. We are pleading with people to push back on the fatigue dont go outside your own double, stay within your immediate family we are particularly concerned about Multigenerational Families getting together we have upped our compliance but there is no amount of compliance enforcement no am of Law Enforcement that can get inside of everybodys living rooms. We pleading with people, do the right thing. We are all excited for vaccines in the spring and summer i shouldnt say all. A lot of people are and a lot of people are saying they are in the going the take it. The doctors i have spoken to say this has been by the book and is extraordinary. How do you convince people to take the thing because if they wont, it wont work. There has been a lot of a lot of noise crept into this discussion that should not have. Politics folks the antivaks crowd, et cetera we are very convinced this ds these developments, the vaccine developments are real, they are safe, they will be efficacious new jersey will have its own separate pro process so people realize it is not just the companies or the federal government but our state will put our own Good Housekeeping seal of approval on it if we dont, we dont think it will be safe and workable. I have to tell you right now i believe strongly it will be. And we have got again public bull horn, Public Service announcements, get folks to realize this is the smart, right thing to do. And god willing we will get what we need. In new jersey we think 70 of our population needs to thats our aspiration to take this vaccine and we are going to do everything we can to get there. Governor phil murphy of new jersey governor thank you. Many School Systems in our country are debating whether to close. New york city did just that, closed to all Remote Learning beginning today. Many patients are protesting the decision nationwide kids and parents are struggling 40 of School Districts are virtual. 23 are hybrid, 36 traditional. All of this is disruptive to children and to our economy cnbcs senior economics correspondent Steve Liesman is here if kids are at home, more parents have to stay home, too, and you wonder, whats that doing to the work force . It is going to depend a lot about how far this goes. We know in 33 states just in the past couple of week there have been some full or partial closures as you say that means some pems of the work force, the caregivers cannot necessarily go to work unless they can fine some help. If you lock at whats happened so far in this recession shep it has been tougher on women than on men 4. 7 million women left the work force or are now unemployed compared to 4. 3 million men. Usually in a recession its the other way. So this has been a very tough recession when it comes to women. One of the reasons is what happens with schools that could show up in labor reports that we are going to get in the next couple of weeks. Steve, we will watch for it. There is more good news tonight on the vaccine front pfizer now, we know will file for fda approval tomorrow according to the head of health and Human Services there is yet another vaccine now showing promise. This time it is the one from the drug Maker Astrazeneca and the university of oxford in england. An early study finds their vaccine is safe, but we are still waiting to learn exactly how effective it is. We will know that after there are 53 confirmed cases of coronavirus if their trial when might that answer come . Heres cnbcs meg tirrell. Reporter the oxford researchers say they expect to know by christmas whether their vaccine prevents covid19. The results today from a phase two trial looked at whether participants manufactured antibodies and t sells from action posure to the vaccine. In the over 70s, which look similar to knows in younger adults. Reporter a respond in older adult is important given they are at higher risk for severe disease. The researchers also found the vaccine to be generally well tolerated with no significant safety issues. Important after a trial of this vaccine was halted for seven weeks in the u. S. As a safety concern was investigated it was ultimately allowed to continue 5yearold jeff carlson is in the u. S. Trial he got his last shot last weekend. He said he felt confident about his safety despite the pause in the study. Something under this much scrutiny i think they have to be very careful. Reporter he says he still want to participate because the world needs more than just two vaccines. I cant control much in the world right now but if there is something i can do. Reporter it would add needed supply around the world. And astrazeneca says it wouldnt require the ultracold storage that pfizers vaccine does he says he canceled lance with his family and is spending thanksgiving at home because he dont know whether he got the placebo or the trial vaccine the World Health Organization just coming out with a new resepect dags about remdesivir and putting the w. H. O. At odds with the United States their recommendation is against using that drug saying it doesnt have an effect on saving lives, prevent be patients from needing ventilators or speeding up recovery. In october, this became the first drug that the fda fully approved to treat covid shortaning symptoms by five days it is a real rift between the u. S. And the w. H. O. Meg tirrell, thank you. Its time. Stop fighting. Stop denying, start cooperating for the good of the United States president elect bidens strong words about President Trump. He will go down in his trae as being the most irresponsible president. Failing legal challenges. No proof of Election Fraud the growing call for the president to face the truth, and stop damaging democracy. Not willing to cut thanksgiving we will snus do it differently. President elect biden says President Trumps refusal to concede is outrageous and sends a horrible message to the world. He will go down in history as being one of the most irresponsible president s in American History its its just out of the not even within the norm at all. Its hard to fathom how this man thinks its hard to fathom. Im confident he knows he hasnt won, is not going to be able to win and we are going to be sworn in on january 20th. There is no excuse he adds for the Trump Administration to hold back coronavirus data and planning from his Transition Team today the president elect met virtually with governors across the country, both republicans and democrats as the pandemic grips our nation at the white house, President Trumps task force held its first public briefing with reporters in more than four months and for the First Time Since april, dr. Anthony fauci was in the home and spoke on vaccine advances President Trump was not there himself. But Vice President pence said at the briefing that it was the president s idea cnns Kayla Tausche with the details. Reporter shep, it was the first public briefing by the Coronavirus Task force since july 8th since then 119,000 americans have died. Today Vice President mike penn and the nations Top Health Officials took no questions on the surging pandemic or the election they are currently contesting dr. Deborah birx attributed the spread in covid to asymptomatic spread in young people and a cold snap in the country the task force, including dr. Fauci said with continued ving i willance and those vaccines there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. We need to actually double down on the Public Health measures as we are waiting for that help to come, which will be soon we will be getting vaccine doses into people at high priority at the end of december. We are not talking about shutting down the country. We are not talking about locking down we are talking about intensifying the simple Public Health measures that we all talk about. Reporter as the white house convenes governors and covid experts in washington, about two hours north, shep, a mirror image of a nashent administration doing exactly the same president elect biden holding a virtual round table with five governors from both the democratic and the Republican Party apiece he said they all agree on averting layoffs of Public Servants and giving widespread access to vaccines and he too believes a lockdown would be counterproductive. There is no circumstance which i can see that would require a total National Shutdown i think that would be counterproductive but there are constraints in which the degree to which businesses can be open. Reporter as the economic crisis simmers, president elect joe biden will meet tony in wilmington with House Speaker nancy pelosi and senator minority leader chuck shumer to discuss their legislative priorities biden also says his treasury secretary has been selected, stay tuned for that news and that he is still considering legal action to force an official call on the election. Shep. Kayla, thank you. President trump getting personally involved in the push to overturn michigans election results. Nbc news reports the president is inviting Michigan State law makers to the white house tomorrow and the president also called two republican Election Officials in wayne county. They now appear to be at least attempting to rescind their decision to certify the results there. Something for which legalabli analysts say there is no provision in the law wayne county voted overwhelmingly for the president elect. President trumps legal team insisted that the president still has a viable path to victory. Rudy giuliani, with darkened sweat streaming from his head screamed of a fantastical and broad conspiracy to steal the election he evoked george soros, hugo chavez and the clinton Ed Administration another talked of communist money through venezuela, cuba and likely china, as he put it. The Trump Campaign and its gop allies have filed at least 30 lawsuits in six different swing states none of them have shown any evidence of voter fraud, or at least widespread hours earlier the team withdraw its last federal lawsuit in michigan then President Trump tweeted they did so because they won none of this is sitting well with the growing number of americas Business Leaders who are now urging President Trump to give it up, admit defeat and cooperate with the biden transition eamon javers now, you spoke with one of them. Thats right. Jay timmons would wants a voice in support of President Trump. He is the leader of the National Association of manufacturers he praised trump or his trade negotiations with chaina. Now he is ready to move on from the trumped a station calling on the gsa to skarn a winner and calling on the white house to cooperate with the biden Transition Team. His association released a Statement Last night calling for the administration to cooperate. I would say if anything we are siding with continuity of government we are siding with making sure that manufacturers are able to continue to do what we need to do to address this crisis. To address this pandemic reporter now, the u. S. Chamber of commerce, which is also a republicanleaning Business Group here in washington, they also released a Statement Today suggesting that the Trump Administration should move forward with the transfer of power shep, i can tell you that private i have been told there are as many as a half dozen different groups of ceos who are convening on conference calls. Shep. Diana olick, thanks. Im shepard sped on cnmith c it is the bottom of the hour time for the top of the news covid cases and hospitalizations are soaring across america the state of missouri is hurting. The covid Positivity Rate there now 29 . It is one of nine states with a rate above 20 right now nearly 2,500 are hospitalized. That has more than doubled this month. Amber elliot was quoted in the Washington Post about the uncontrolled spread the virus in missouri she says she has been threatened for trying to talk about science and facts. To the post, she said i have been living with that steady hum of tension and fear for almost a year and i just cant do it anymore. I keep saying my family is my number one priority. So at some point i have to keep my kids safe i decided to put in my notice earlier this month my last day is this friday, tomorrow you had to quit . Yeah. You know, i think it it really comes down to the safety of my children you felt like they were in danger yeah. Yeah, did. Why i mean we had we had someone take a picture of us at a ball game. And it included my daughter. And i think that was the turning point for me after putting up with quite a lot of things over the last, you for example eight months you know, i think that was the tipping point. You have said the more you talk about the facts the more it seems to put a target on your back if people at your level are being threatened for just telling the truth, how concerned are you for the rest of front line workers, our heroes everywhere absolute will he. I think we are seeing it our Health Care Work remembers exhausted. And they are shouldering the bulk of this pandemic and really working on the front lines to actively save lives. And you know people still we have heard the stories of people they are still not believing that this pandemic is real. So tomorrow is your last day on the job. Yeah. Sometimes it feels like we lose sight of First Responders on all levels fighting this virus because it is so overwhelming how big of a burden is this to fight . And what does it take for people who are trying to help and need to quit for their own safety i just wonder how it comes to this. Yeah, i mean, its a huge burden because, you know, i think even my staff this has intersected all of their lives you know, we have a small staff. You know, the county is about 67,000 people. So our staff is like 23 people and we have worked around the clock for eight months and you know, its just not sustainable. And then you couple that with you know a lot of the backlash in the community when you are literally just trying to help and prevent the surge that we are seeing now in missouri to the hospital system. And you know, it makes it a lot harder it is a hard story for us to tell because it is not like a fire where we can show a building burn. Why. We cant show the inside of the hospital i wonder, if you could, for our viewers some of whom are probably going, they are blowing this out of proportion, if you could paint a picture for us of what its like. Obviously i am not working in the hospital i am directing a Health Department but we work closely with our hospital system. So you have to always think about that the hospital is something that we think is always going to be there and, you know, right know, across missouri we are seeing a surge of patients. And i think they have been very vocal in st. Louis about talking about what the surge is looking like there and that they are at capacity. And we have had a lot of difficulty you know transferring patients and making sure that, you know, weve got a place that we can care for people you know, at the heart of it thats what Health Care Workers want we want to be able to serve our public, our citizens and we want to be able to serve them safely. And that means safety for us that means safe patient ratios for them you know, i think it is a really big concern right now. Amber elliot best of luck on your last day. And to you and your family thank you. Thank you i appreciate it. Theres breaking news now, and it comes to us from the state of georgia, and has to do with the election recount. Remember, there is a hand redown going on across the state of georgia because the election was so close we have just heard from the secretary of state announcing that the hand audit of the ballots in georgia has not altered president elect bidens victory in that state. The hand recount of about 5 million votes triggered by state law, not a response to any suspected problems in fact, they say there were none the state has until tomorrow to certify the results. But the bottom line is the election holds biden is the president elect. And that is the end of that. The pandemic making it tougher for families to put food on the table the organization feeding america estimates 17 million more americans face what they call food up security thats roughly the population of americas four biggest cities, new york, los angeles, chicago, and houston, combined. People who never before needed to rely on food banks coming here to get food for their families ahead of the holidays this estimates they are going the see a 25 to 30 increase i spoke to the Program Manager about all of this this morning. I think a lot of people are afraid i think a lot of people are in a position where they just dont know what to think they dont know what to do they dont know where to turn. Reporter Program Managers and volunteers at these sites keep telling me that every day that guess by that we still do not have a federal level aid package available to people and individuals who are struggling, their lines are going to get longer and there is going to be immense strain on sites like this back to you, shep. Which means local workers that are seasonal who want a call to come back to work arent going to get that call it means the Tourism Industry for the state of new mexico is in great jeopardy because of how much money it takes in for Winter Tourism last year it cook in 263 million in ski tourism alone when the season was cut short in the spring they were estimated to lose about 70 million dollars. We spoke with the executive director of ski new mexico to ask him about what this means particularly when we are focused in on this Holiday Season and the revenue loss they could be facing to say how much it is going to impact us would be dependent how soon we can get open if we miss christmas at all of our ski areas which god we hope we dont that could be up to 40 of the business of the ski areas.
