The breaking point when the robots are finished, i feel comfortable plus, meet the hightech viruskilling robot fighting covid19 announcer live from cnbc global headquarters, the facts, the truth, the news with shepherd smith. Good evening with four days until the election, joe biden and President Trump are on a final Campaign Blitz, crisscrossing the midwest as politics and the pandemic collide headon in the heartland of america the candidates holding dueling events where covid hospitalizations are at record highs. And patients are overwhelming some hospitals heres a look at where theyre campaigning today. Biden also making it to des moines, while the president is near detroit. And they have a very busy weekend ahead. Tomorrow, biden and former president obama will Campaign Together in michigan, flynt, and then detroit President Trump spending saturday in mustwin pennsylvania, with three rallies across that state. Now, a live look in rochester, minnesota, where the Trump Campaign planned a rally with thousands and thousands of supporters, but covid safety rules in the state capped the crowd at just 250. He says hell go anyway. The president stepped off air force one just minutes ago over in milwaukee, biden is set to give a soul of the nation speech within the next hour. Bidens running mate, senator Kamala Harris, campaigning in texas today, one of the traditionally deep state red red states that democrats are looking to flip. Oops more than 9 million texans have voted already. 9 million. Thats more than the entire voter turnout there four years ago. In total, President Trump is planning 14 rallies in the final three days of the campaign on the trail today, President Trump continuing to insist that were rounding a turn of the pandemic of course, were not we just had more than 90,000 new covid cases in a single day for the first time ever. Were on the ground, following both campaigns in the final stretch. Garrett hake with trump in rochester, b shep, joe biden just took off from minnesota, flying here to wisconsin for the third stop of his blitz across the midwest this is not the last that the midwest is going see of him. You hes going to head to michigan tomorrow tomorrow before moving on to pennsylvania, the battleground state he has spent the most time in thus far this general. The key to this midwest swing is rebuilding that blue wall that donald trump helped to crumble in 2016. Joe biden talking about why hes stumping in places that went red in 2016, but also spending time in minnesota, which went blue. Listen to what he said why minnesota democrats won minnesota in 2016. Are you concerned . No, im not concerned were going to be in iowa, in wisconsin, i thought i would stop in minnesota. I dont take anything for granted. Were going to work for every single vote up until the last minute reporter shep, you talk about every single vote, more than 2. 1 million votes have already been have already been counted here in wisconsin you compare that to the total in 2016, which 2. 9 million, you can feel an enthusiasm here on the ground and i have to tell you, as ive been talking to voters across this county today, the one thing that they all have in common is that the pandemic is front of mind for them, the key issue that all of them are taking with them into the blot box shep ali vitali on the Biden Campaign now garrett hake at President Trumps event in rochester, minnesota garrett . Reporter shep, everything about this last event of the day today is unusual the fact that were even campaigning in minnesota, a state that hasnt gone for republicans since 1972, is unusual. The president s been fuming all day about this event, in particular because of covid restrictions that capped what was supposed to be a rally of many thousands of supporters, at an event with just 250 socially distant following covid rules that his campaign usually ignores. He landed a short time ago, hopped right into his limousine and drove around and outside this rally, so that he could go greet thousands of supporters who had gathered outside hes been complaining at his other stops today, including in green bay, about the covid restrictions here, but the reality on the ground is, minnesota is having a terrible week of the pandemic its worst so far they set their record for hospitalizations on wednesday. They set their record for new cases on thursday. And the governor and the attorney general of the state are trying now to enforce these rules. The president essentially running against the Public Health rules being put in place in the states. Its a strange closing message here, shep, but thats where we are in 2020. Garrett, thanks a Record Number of americans has already voted this year. More than 85 million ballots cast early voting in hawaii and texas surpassing the total votes cast in 2016. Montana, tennessee, and Washington State inching closer to that. Experts are predicting a record 150 million voters this year that would be 65 of all eligible voters in the whole country and the highest rate since the election of 1908 Cnbcs Kayla Tausche now on what that means for election day turnout. Kayla . Reporter shep, across the critical electoral battleground, early voting far outpaces the demand for 2016. In ohio, Officials Say demand for early voting this year is fully double that of the prior Election North Carolina expects 80 of votes to be cost before tuesday and in arizona, the number of accepted ballots as they call them there, thats already 85 of all votes cast in the last election but all of that is based on the last election, and none of the officials in the dozen states that we reached out to could say how turnout this year will actually look and how much of the vote has been front loaded in the last two months in the midwest, they say, voters are still going to be going to the polls on election day. Officials in iowa, an unlikely swing state, where President Trump is heading this weekend, they expect turnout to be, in their words, significant michigan is estimating about 40 of a total 5 million votes will come on tuesday. And despite snow already on the ground in minnesota, the state says its historically number one in turnout, and says thats proof of high attendance but officials acknowledge, its impossible to know exactly how many to anticipate a wisconsin state official tells cnbc, predicting turnout is a fools errand when there are so many unknowns and variables this year but shep, even if they dont know the exalt number of people who will be heading to the polls, wisconsin officials do tell us one thing. They expect on election night, it will be too close to call shep kayla, thanks Security Issues also a looming concern for election day businesses across the nation boarding up storefronts to brace for increased activity los angeles planning to shut rodeo drive on election day. Businesses in swaths of downtown d. C. Near the white house boarding up in preparation Macys Department store in manhattan just started putting its boards up. In boston, workers boarded up the Prudential Center and along michigan avenues shopping strip boarding up windows ahead of the vote covid watch now. The United States has hit another grim milestone more than 9 pll confirmed cases total. Thats more than any other country on the planet, by far. The u. S. Added about 88,000 cases yesterday, a singleday record again, and for context, thats more than one new case in america every second thats from johns hopkins. Here you can see how cases have increased since april. That peak at the end, thats where we are today were averaging about 76,000 cases a day over the past week but its a different story with deaths keep an eye on the red line here it shows how the number of deaths have changed throughout the pandemic in midapril, more than 2,200 people dying every day during the summer wave, that number was cut in half and as cases rise again, its less still we know deaths are a lagging indicator, but its clear, covid is killing at a much slower rate to help explain it all, Scott Gottlieb joins us now, former fda commissioner, cnbc medical contributor, dr. Gottlieb, where are we now, big picture . Were at a point where the epidemic is accelerating across the country. Were right at the beginning of the steep part of the epidemic the beginning weve seen these episodes before right. And youll see cases start to accelerate in the coming weeks i think the Inflection Point is really going to be thanksgiving. December is probably going to be the toughest month well see cases accelerate into thanksgiving i think well be forced to take tougher mitigation steps right around thanksgiving and people will start to reduce their activity well see states implement targeted mitigation. That will be probably the turning point. Right now, today, we recorded 97,000 cases we probably will cross 100,000 maybe tomorrow, but certainly by next week. So this is beginning to accelerate around the country. And the reason why it doesnt feel very bad in most parts of the country right now is because its moderately bad everywhere as opposed to the epidemics before that were centered in new york or in the south, this one is more confluent across the entire country well, if its moderately bad everywhere, and the trend is up, then are we anticipating really bad everywhere i think thats the risk we saw in the spring a very dense epidemic in new york then over the summer, we saw a very dense epidemic in the south. States and cities like phoenix, houston, miami i think now were seeing epidemics start to spring up everywhere around the country. Its centered right now in the midwest and the upper midwest, the great lakes region, but youre seeing cases pick up pretty much everywhere some parts of the country are maintaining better control, like the tristate region, the midatlantic states, but everywhere else is seeing cases start to pick up and accelerate. We keep hearing, vaccine around the corner, vaccine around the corner. Thats, of course, if they can make sure its safe and it works, but when would everyone have availability . Like, when will it really protect us is there a timeline . Yeah, well, im on the board of pfizer, which is one of the companies that has a vaccine in advanced development i think theres a possibility that if the trials underway right now and pfizer and moderna are the furthest ahead with their vaccines, if those trials are successful, we should have results some point this month. You could see an authorization for a vaccine, for a highrisk population, largely an older population happen at some point this year. And maybe people start to get vaccinated this year but theyre not going to have protective immunity until 2021 you need two doses of the vaccine, it needs to be spaced a about a month apart, so it will be february or march before that First Tranche of patients that are eligible to receive a vaccine actually have protective immunity in terms of the general population, i think were unlikely to have a licensed vaccine for broad use until really perhaps the Second Quarter of 2021 or the early Third Quarter of 2021. Hope flip in time for the fall and winter season of 2021, but not in time for what were going through right now. Lets hope. Dr. Gottlieb, thank you. Have a good weekend. Illinois has shattered another covid record cases skyrocketing to more than 6,900 in one day thats more than triple what they added just one month ago, from the Illinois Department of health these troubling new numbers are triggering new restrictions across chicago today the windy city shut down Indoor Dining and bar service, its over. But the Illinois Restaurant association is pushing back. Board members say theyre planning to sue the state over the new measures we all agree that private uncontrolled gatherings are a leading cause in a rise in cases. Closing restaurants for Indoor Service will cause the exact opposite of the intended impact of slowing the spread, as it drives people further into uncontrolled, unmonitored private gatherings, where few safety precautions are in place. Well, the pandemic is forcing thousands of restaurants out of business, the rest clearly struggling to stay afloat. Nbcs cal perry in chicago and how theyre dealing with the new restriction restrictions shep, new daily high totals the past couple of days has people rattled. Health Officials Say theyre at a nearbreaking point in the hospitals and then you have the economic costs just restaurants alone, we have seen 5,000 people go out of business in the state of illinois since the pandemic began and were looking at new measures to curtail the business nobody can make money under these conditions we went from having a couple thousand employees to now having about 400 employees and were soon going to have a heck of a lot less and how do you look these people in the eye that have families and have to feed them, like i just did today, and say, sorry, weve got to furlough you again. The politics of this, especially locally, are exceedingly difficult, if not impossible the mayor had initially wanted to keep restaurants open she met with the governor, she changed her mind theyre shutting down Indoor Dining looming large over all of this is the lack of a stimulus package. So hard to tell businesses to shut down when theyre not getting any federal bailout money. It leveled buildings and triggered a tsunami. Heres Richard Engel reporter shep, this area is well known for earthquakes there have been many there before both turkey and greece are on fault lines. And this earthquake happened right between them in the aegean sea. It was a relatively shallow earthquake, but what was unusual is that it raised a small tsunami. You dont often see tsunamis in the Mediterranean Region it raised the water, the tide pushed on to the island of samos, which is part of greece, and also on to the turkish coastline near the city of ismir, and inside the city of ismir, where some of the streets were turned into rivers filled with debris. At least 20 buildings collapsed in ismir, several of them apartment buildings. The death toll remains fluid so far, it does not seem to be a massive number of casualties, but there are still quite a few people missing some of them feared drowned, some of them feared swept out to sea. Apple and amazon, you know theyre up 50 to 60 this year and if the economy is going to slow down in the fourth quarter, investors are starting to wonder, should we really be paying these skyhigh prices for these tech stocks . Understood. Bob pisani, thank you. Good evening im Shepard Smith on cnbc. Its the bottom of the hour. Time for the top of the news the sprint to the vote President Trump planning an allout blitz. 14 rallies scheduled between now and tuesday. The focus, pennsylvania and the midwest. Joe biden also picking up the pace two events planned in michigan tomorrow both with his former boss, the president , barack obama. Their first inperson rally together this year the candidates all in on the battleground states and our reporters are, too we begin in south florida. Im Allison Barber in miamidade county. In florida, early voting is up across the state here in miami, about 54 of registered voters in miamidade have already voted early thats absentee, mailin, and early inperson voting if you talked to voters here, you get a sense of just how close this president ial race is. One woman told us that she waited until she stepped into the voting booth to decide between biden and trump. Im Chris Jansing in georgia where early voting is absolutely annihilating records democrats counting on groups from the naacp to stacey abra abramss fair fight to get out huge numbers of black voters, while republicans are counting on a visit this weekend to a very red area by President Trump, because voting there early has been lagging behind. When you have a race this close, it always comes down to who mobilizes their voters im price sill scilla thompsn texas, where more than 9 Million People have cast ballots early that is an alltime high, shattering the record for total turnout set in 2016. And it was then that donald trump won the state by nine points that is the slimmest margin, a victory for any gop candidate in two decades. Senator Kamala Harris is in the state campaigning today, hoping that she can help flip it blue for democrats. Reporter im dasha burns in michigan about 2. 5 million michigan voters have already turned in their ballots. Thats about half of the 5 million total turnout in the 2008 president ial election, which was the highest turnout in michigan history so far, this poll shows joe biden leading in this state. Hes also outspending the president in ads here. Covid cases have been on the rise in michigan and across the midwest, which could give a boost to biden the former Vice President will need to turn out the black vote here he will also need to get some moderate republicans, like those in the suburbs of grand rapids to vote blue im Brian Sullivan in rochester, minnesota a state where both candidates will appear in today in a latestage push to swing voters their way. Economy, health care, and issues of Racial Justice at the top of mind for voters, with 1. 7 million absentee ballots already having been requested here in minnesota in a state where both candidates want and both candidates may need. Thank you, brian, and all of you in those battlegrounds with less than four days to go, were seeing some eyebrowraising numbers. One this week in wisconsin, a 17point lead for the democratic candidate, joe biden today, a new nbc news marist poll in North Carolina has biden up six, but the real clear politics average of the polls is 1. 2, is this like deja vu to 2016 can we trust these polls str seat Steve Kornacki with answer what if the polls are as wrong in 2020 as they were in 2016 so what youve got here, these are the current poll averages in the battleground states. And what we did is we looked at each one of these battleground states and said, how much were the final policy off in 2016 and said, lets apply the same miss and what would that do to 2020 you see the picture does change. You start to see a little bit more red here. Trump picks up, wisconsin, North Carolina, ohio, iowa this would not be enough of a switch, not enough of a poll miss to put trump over 270 but you can see, hed be knocking on the door it would change the race significantly. Of course, they can be wrong one way or the other very good point and in 2012, in fact, the election before 16, they were wrong the other way. They underestimated Barack Obamas support that year. So we also said, what if these polls are missing like they missed in 2012 on Barack Obamas support . What would that look like on election day and there, suddenly, you see biden starts to run away with a bunch of states. Trump only ends up with arizona. Biden wins the lions share and he wins them pretty easily, too. Yeah, texas, you know, really has me head scratching weve already had more texans vote this year, already, than voted in all of 2016 do we have any idea who they are and whats motivating them are they going left or right its a fascinating thing. We can put those stats up again. You can see past the 2016 level. Demographically, our friends at target smart have come up with some data. They say they are, relative to 2016, a little bit more collegeeducated white voters in the electorate a little bit lower right now in the noncollege whites, the trump ase. College white is the Democratic Base but the big question is, does that just mean that on election day, that trump demographic is going to turn out more and level things off, or have the democrats built a more permanent advantage here the election day will tell us that well know when we know soon enough, we wont be talking polls at all, well be talking actual votes, hard numbers but this year, the count may take a while election lawsuits are piling up very high. More than 230 lawsuits already filed. Cnbcs scott cohn now with how this race gets counted in battleground North Carolina, among the 3. 2 Million People who have voted early in person is a restaurant manager concerned about reopening the economy. I voted for donald trump. I voted the republican ticket the whole day down selfdescribed independent Shelia Bumgarner went for biden. Shes among the nearly 900,000 in the state so far who have voted by mail. I think joe biden has more integrity in his baby finger than donald trump has in his whole body reporter according to the latest nbc news marist poll in North Carolina, 76 of mailin voters went for biden. Of those who will vote in person on election day, twothirds plan to vote for trump, which is why the counting nationwide becomes so important North Carolina is among 21 states and the district of columbia that will accept mailin votes arriving after election day, that include battlegrounds like minnesota, ohio, pennsylvania, and texas. Some key states like arizona, iowa, and texas can start counting mailin ballots before election day but others cant even start to process them before tuesday, including michigan, wisconsin, and pennsylvania, where counties decide when to start counting. The secretary of state there is telling them to waste no time. Im going to strongly urge every single county to start precanvassing the ballots on election day secretary of state Kathy Boockvar says she does believe that pennsylvania can get something close to a full result in a matter of days. In michigan, they think that they can get it done by the end of next week in wisconsin, they still think they can have a pretty complete tally by the end of the day on wednesday. Of course, the courts may have other ideas. Suffice it to say, shep, the suspense is not over yet no doubt. Scott, thanks so much. Hope youll be with us on tuesday, 7 00 p. M. Eastern for a special edition of the news. The vote, were calling it ingenious, right and all night long on cnbc, ill be calling the races and the smart people will be talking about things in other words, the cnbc people, from the middle of the day, the brilliant ones theyll talk you through what it all means for your money and the economy and all the rest do it different this year, cnbc on election night. Hes losing women voters by 26 points nationally. 34 to 60 according to the latest nbc news wall street journal poll. Its a big reason states like texas and georgia are now in play cnbcs ylan mui on suburban women and just how crucial they are all the way down the ballot. As a lifelong democrat, paula benison never used to talk politics with her neighbors. Prescott county is a very red county in a very red state so, yes, for most of my time here, ive tried to publicly, at least, you know, keep quiet about that reporter until now, her neighborhood is in georgias seventh congressional district, one of the rapidly growing suburbs across the country, where democrats are hoping to flip once solidly republican seats. The race here is wide open after the current congressman, republican rob woodall decided to retire. Now the democrat and gop candidates are in a dead heat. Georgias two republicanheld senate seats are also tossups, as is the president ial race. And women like benson are driving a lot of that momentum nationally, women have donated 2. 5 billion to political campaigns, more than double what they gave four years ago analysts say President Trumps style of policies have been particularly polarizing among women. Benson, married to a black man and the mother of mixed race children, said she is tired of Racial Injustice its been a need. I need to speak out. I just cant state quiet any longer and i found some friends who actually do think like me. And have given me the courage to speak out a little bit more. Reporter but theres energy on the other side of the aisle, as well. I am a big believer in Less Government involvement democrats are trying to push the equality act reporter basically, bottom line, its because i believe in freedom. Reporter debbie welcha organized this Video Campaign to help women connect to the gop. Shes watched the district turn from red to purple and now shes mobilizing other moms by focusing on Kitchen Table issues we have Affordable Health care, our taxes are in a good place. And you know, for our business, regulations have been loosened a little bit and so i think we just want to keep things as we are. Shep, the party that can win in the cuddldesac could end u in control of washington President Trumps Campaign Adviser tells nbc news that if he wins a second term, cracking down on sanctuary cities will be a top priority those are places that dont cooperate with the government to find and deport undocumented immigrants a warning shot that in a state like california, where there are 20 sanctuary cities, from san diego up to sonoma that blue state and the president are often at odds on immigration, climate change, energy, really they dont see eye to eye on much of anything cnbcs jane wells is there we looked it up. California has sued the Trump Administration more than 100 times. What happens if he wins . Reporter well, you can expect more lawsuits and who knows what else. But you know, you would expect no letup in the war of words between the golden state and the white house. In fact some are starting to float the s word, secession. Theyre saying, california on its own is the worlds fifth largest economy, so what if we left california is that popular kid you love to hate successful, beautiful, lives in a nice house, feels superior, but whose home life is pretty much a mess. California is still considered an odd ball as it relates to the other 49 states and its too bad reporter former San Francisco mayor willie brown isnt arguing for secession, but he says california could better serve californians without the federal government who need who more thats a good question. Reporter economist Chris Thornberg says an independent california would be more like a socialist european nation but with strong exports, tourism eventually, a gdp of nearly 3 trillion but the bear republic would have to print its own dollars and fund a military. Its interesting thinking about the folks in sacramento having to make decisions about military investments, right . They barely seem capable of figuring out educational investments, much less, you know, airplanes and bombs and that kind of stuff we send the federal government a lot more revenue than we get back reporter well, five years ago, california was sending the federal government 29 billion more than it received. But by 2018, even with trump in power, the opposite happened, washington was sending california back 2 billion more than it got. And going independent might mean even higher taxes. I would like to say california is not a hightax state, we are a stupidtax state. Reporter thats because the state budget overwhelmingly depends on the Capital Gains of its wealthiest residents and what if they left . Thornburne says their incomes would still from california companies, so they would still have to pay. I dont know how you in good conscience could leave a place like california, which is what gave you the window of opportunity. Reporter but really, why sece secede the leaders of both parties in fact house are californians. And if joe biden is elected, californians will be second and third in line. Theyll practically run the place. Okay, one more reason to hate us, but california gets by far most federal aid compared to every other state, because we have so many people, so per capita, its actually almost 40 below the national average, because we have so many people, and a lot of people that a state with so many people deserves more than two u. S. Senators. But shep, currently to do that, we would have to set the state up into several californias. Well put you on the dollar bill jane wells live in cali. A patient will come up to the machine, taking a serialized tube, spit in the tube, hand it to the machine inside the machine, a robo arm goes to work processing the sample the entire test is done right there.
