Countrys First Federal trial over the Opioid Epidemic this monday, october 21st, Worldwide Exchange begins right now. Good morning, good afternoon or good evening and welcome from wherefore in the world that you may be watching im Brian Sullivan thanks for joining us here on Worldwide Exchange. Your chart of the day really maybe chart of the year and perhaps the one stock that everybody will be talking about and certainly is boeing. Investors losing a lot of money on friday. That stock down nearly 7 and taking the dow 170 points down with it. A rash of headlines and breaking news this morning as well as over the weekend, were going to break it all down for you. We have phil lebeau coming up live in just a couple minutes. But first, on a macrolevel you better get ready because this is a monster earnings week. Hundreds of the Biggest Companies in america set to show off their numbers and maybe this is finally the thing we need to look past things like trade fights and brexit as your driver for stocks, at least for right now. Nearly half of the dow will report their numbers this week, there are some of the names and ahead of it, futures, well, they are mildly higher. Not a big jump were seeing dow futures up 53 points right now thats something to watch coming off of friday where boeing was the big story. Now the dow of course is the big companies. But last week was actually quietly a pretty good one for the little guys. Small caps ridesing 1. 5 last week the russell 2 now, and s p small cap both up about 1. 5 bonds are holding relatively steady yields may be creeping up just a bit. The benchmark ten year at 1. 78 . Lets go around the world now and asia, china flat in hong kong and in japan, the nikkei 225 up again and Pay Attention, the nikkei actually up about 5 in just the last 90 days that is something you want to watch despite september exports for that country falling 5 over last year. Meantime, in europe, its a mixed trade. Mostly fat trade not seeing a whole lot going on. Maybe mildly higher. Look at this the ftse 900 up 9, 100th of. Uk, we begin this morning, uk Prime MinisterBoris Johnson failing yet again to sell his brexit deal. So, lets find out exactly where we stand with just ten days to go until a hard brexit is triggered. Steve sedge wick with more steve . Reporter brian, i owe you and your viewers a massive apology because every single time i tell them were getting to the crunch of this, were getting to the key point, it just gets elongated. So big sorry to everyone on Worldwide Exchange. I thought saturday would be a key day. What happened . They didnt have the meaningful vote because there was an amendment beforehand from a former conservative Party Minister who basically said, look, really we dont trust you. We need you to have this extension and then potentially well back your deal thats pretty much what happened so we didnt get the meaningful vote spin forward to what it means it means grudgingly the british Prime Minister didnt sign it saying parliament wants me to send this. Im not sending it it was like a teenage child. Then he sent one on top of that which he did sign saying, look, dond, im sorry about this its bad for europe and bad for the uk what does it mean . It means theres potentially not going to be approval from mps why wont they approve it . Because they dont trust in the background there isnt something to get a no deal brexit as you say is looming around about ten days time. He sent his extension letter whats going to happen next . Well, its all based in Parliament Rather than brussels for now. Potentially hell have his vote again today although its undoubtedly. Tomorrow, i promise you tomorrow there could well be a key vote on the whole process its going to be called a withdrawal agreement, implementation bill. There you go, thats what your viewers want to hear. Boris johnson requested that extension. Steve, do we need any word or have we gotten any word from the European Union on this no. Let me make this clear the European Union is going like this, just tapping their fingers, waiting for the brits to do something. We dont get it. We dont want to react yet because we want to see whats happening in westminster if they agree to the extension and proves not necessary as well, then they kind of did it unnecessarily. They want to see if Boris Johnson tomorrow and i promise you something will happen tomorrow, if Boris Johnson tomorrow can get this implementation bill through, if he gets the numbers like his foreign secretary says hes got, then hell try to push for another bill through parliament. Very quickly saying im in control of the parliamentary agenda and try to get this done with the queens assent. They may not need the extension. In the meantime, mr. Macron, merkel will just say yeah we got the letter but frankly were not going to do anything about it because we want to see what your bonkers politicians in london will be doing. At the moment theyre just holding fire. Holding fire. By the way, steve, no apology necessary because you and 1,000 other people have found this a difficult subject to follow, steve. Always a pleasure, my friend no apology necessary. All right. So how does whats happening over there matter to your money and investments over here . Joining us now is daniel morris, he is Senior Investment strategist daniel, what is your firms base case on how this whole brexit thing ult plaimately plays out whats going to happen from it i dont know if anyone really has base cases anymore you lay out some of the scenarios, try to put some probabilities on it, but whats abit astounding after everything we have gone through and what happened over the weekend, all the different scenarios for the outcome from brexit, you have a hard brexit, you have the uk having the second referendum so the whole thing gets reversed to different versions of the deals that we had proposed so far from Boris Johnson to theresa may, all though options are still possible and will depend on what happens in parliament this week. No one really is going to hazard a guess as to what might actually take place. All i can say is uncertainty frankly has not diminished. So is it flip a coin . How much uncertainty, daniel, is there . If no one knows whats going to happen, how do we know what to do well, you can look at how sterling is eacting, which so sfar still seems to be pricing lower hard probability, were now above 1340 to the there is more optimism we do agree that the odds of a hard brexit have fanl, but within the outcome beyond that is where it becomes quite difficult to hazard any prognosis what kind of deal will end up at the end of this. It seems the probability of a hard brexit has fallen but certainly it still exists. But then there are many other options to the hard brexit that we dont know really which one its going to be yet. Where do we invest . What are some of bnp best investment ideas right now, daniel despite all this and the chaos that seems to be taking place in the uk, we are on the margin overweight risks in general. We do like equities and like credit and do like u. S. Equities though one thing i have to mention you talk about earnings season were in the midst of and a lot of Companies Reporting this week, we have to Pay Attention more necessarily than the actual earnings result is the guidance that we get from companies and the guidance we got last week was not very good. You had 25 Companies Report on thursday and friday and only four of them raised guidance, which is historically very low percentage even if the numbers seem to come in good or well for this quarter, if you have lower guidance through the rest of the year and into next year, the market is going to trade more on that than necessarily on their earnings. Good luck trying to figure this out, daniel when and if you do please let us know and well get you back on Worldwide Exchange. Daniel morris, thank you very much. Well, we are just Getting Started on this very busy monday when we come back, flaring up again and getting even worse how the unrest in hong kong is beginning to take its toll on Global Business and the markets. You can see Hong Kong Island on your left. We begin there because over the weekend, the crisis in hong kong flaring up again protesters clashing with police, even go so far as to set up roadblocks and hurl fire bombs the demonstrations, now in their 20th week, along with slowin growth in Mainland China beginning to take its toll on the markets. Look at the hang seng up fractionally right now but down over 7 over the past 90 days. Lets now get more on the news and another weekend of anger in hong kong nbcs Janis Mackey Frayer joining us live from there reporter brian, we saw the 20th consecutive weekend and each week the protests get increasingly violent and this past weekend a new flash point as protesters were passing by this mosque, Police Water Cannon drove past and sprayed that stinging blue dye they have been using in the Water Cannons to clear protesters, hitting the mosque its been cleaned up now, but there was this real sense and fear among hong kong officials they needed to act quickly to min mieds the damage carrie lam and the police chief coming here today to apologize to the muslim community. There is the sense that among protesters that this is another example of what they call a disregard by police in using harsh tactics to break up protests police have been using tear gas, increasingly using rubber bullets, Water Cannons, firing sponge grenades. Over the weekend, we saw the protesters ramping up their tack tings as well, using what police say is more than 100 fire bombs and targeting businesses, primarily banks, shops and restaurants they see as having links to Mainland China. Is there any end in sight this is now in its 20th week they seem to be ramping up, not scaling back reporter well, the protesters continue to push for these five demands they want protection of broader Political Rights they also are protesting what they see as Police Brutality they want independent inquiries. But overall, there appears to be no Common Ground right now so there is little starting point for negotiation beyond the determination by protesters that theyll continue to come out week after week in order to push through these demands. So 20 weeks in, it does not appear that there is any end in sight to this unrest brian . Janis Mackey Frayer in hong kong, another difficult weekend there. Janice, thank you very much. Plus, just what companies are going to win the streaming tv battle . Barron is making its picks and one of them is very close to home its monday, october 21st, and the second half of Worldwide Exchange begins right now good morning, and welcome back its 5 27 here on the east coast im Brian Sullivan nice to have you with us on this monday morning all right, which of you, all of you out there, is ready for a big week for earnings . Because its just hundreds of the Biggest Companies in the world set to show off their numbers. Maybe, just maybe, this is the thing that we need to look past things like the trade fight and brexit as the main driver for stocks at least right now ahead of all those names, too many to name, futures are mildly higher, up 47 points right now the dow fractionally lower last week friday driven mostly by boeing well get to that in a minute. But those are the biggest names. Last week a very good one for the little guys. The russell 2,000 and the s p small cap 600 both did great, kind of under the radar rising about 1. 5 last week, just something to watch the big names get all the attention, but last week the small caps got all the love. Now to your top story, once again, it is boeing. Shares likely to be under pressure again today they fell 7 on friday that was boeings worst oneday drop since february of 2016 after it was revealed that officials in washington are intensifying their probe into the companys troubled 737 max as well as company management. Cnbc phil lebeau joining us from chicago with more on this big story. Snil. Reporter its a big week for boeing, bigger than most because of everything thats going on. First off, the board is meeting today the second day of a twoday meeting in san antonio this was previously scheduled. This is not something they called because of the new questions that are out there, but it comes a couple of days before the Company Reports q3 earnings the numbers are not in focus its what ceo Dennis Mullenburg will say during the annual Conference Call because the pressure in washington, d. C. Continues to mount you talk about what happened on friday there were documents that were leaked out from a Congressional Committee regarding a test pilot for boeing back in 2016, 2017 when they were developing the simulator control hardware, the faa as well as these Congressional Committees are seeking answers about what the max test pilot was talking about when he made comments about the fact that he, quote unquote, basically lied to regulators and then put in parentheses unknowingly. Boeing releasing a statement yesterday as all of these questions continue to swirl. We understand the scrutiny this is receiving you take a look of shares at boeing, we did hear from the attorney for that test pilot on friday, he sent a statement to us here at cnbc basically saying, brian, these comments were taken out of context. You can bet this will be the focus not only today but all this week. How is that taken out of context . Hes a test pilot who has flown the plane. No, he was in Simulator Software for the simulator of the plane. You have to understand theyre in the midst of developing it. Now according to his attorney, while they are developing this, he made some comments to another coworker and they the way hes couching this, this is in the process of them working on the software it was not a finalized version of this. Its them working on it. Boeing said in their statement yesterday they would like to talk to the test pilot we know congressional investigators would like to talk to the test pilot. He was called before a grand jury thats been looking into this and i dont know this for a fact, but we know there are reports that he may have taken the fifth amendment. So lets see what answers if any come out of the next week and a half. I dont want to put you on the spot, phil lets say they approve the plane at some point. Okay its safe to fly. Right. These planes i would imagine theres all the software upgrades, whatever they have to do, b, theres just physical maintenance you have to do correct. You cant park a car for a year and then just start it up and drive to the grocery store. They go through maintenance everyday thats part of what you see the airlines as well as boeing doing. But to your point, you cant flip a switch and get these back into gear. It will take 30 to 45 days depending on where the plane is. They do have teams that boeing says will go out and put the software on the plane. Thats probably the easiest part of getting these planes ready to fly again. Youre right you have to do a lot of daily maintenance on these planes. Phil lebeau, thanks for joining us. You bet. Boeing dragging the dow down on friday, having its worst day in nearly three years. Does that mean you need to avoid most of the market because boeing is bringing the dow down . Your next guest says no and in fact he has some companies that he knoowns that he likes a lot joining me is david katz you, david, good morning by the way. Good morning. Do not own boeing is it because of the 737 max or Something Else we havent owned it because its a great business but a high ip that hurt us for the last few years. If you have a 12 to 18 month time rise theres a good likelihood they will be higher when you look at a name like this, some people might suggest this is the perfect opportunity. Its a wellrun company, 100yearold company that has some problems. Theyve got problems they switched out. They removed their chairman and made him ceo stocks put under pressure. But if you look, 10, 15 years out. These kinds of problems one would aslum not last forever. They wont last forever most investors dont have that tenyear time rise if you had that time rise sign of the times, dave. We think the stock will be higher but shortterm a lot of negative news. You dont want to be around that volatility and negative news, we think you wait. Youre not poking around boeing just yet. Not yet, no. I want to move on to another topic as well. This is a major week for the pharmaceutical industry as well because we have a landmark trial involving the Opioid Crisis and in fact that trial gets under way today. Efforts to strike a settlement broke down over the weekend f state and local governments rejected a 4 billion offer. Opening arguments are set to begin later this morning do you own any of those names or any names that sbrn caught up, sort of, david, in the headlines . We dont own any of those names that are the biggest players in it. We do own johnson johnson. Unlike a boeing, we think the stocks held off enough we would be adding right here. J j is like a boxer getting hit with a jab and upper cut on the one hand you have the opioid stuff and on the other hand you have the talcum powder stuff. Why are you able to look through that we think their liabilities are 8 to 14 billion its a huge company, massive cash flow, selling at reasonable evaluation, so they are going to be muddled through these things. We think in certain cases theyre close r to getting out of the litigation. So thats one where we think the timing is good but you have to hold it. Theres lawyers out there actively petitioning for clients. Its a cottage industry. That doesnt worry you . Youre willing to look past it for now. It worries us we quantified what we think the ultimate cost will be. The stock and the company is much more powerful than that. One more over the weekend barons is saying that it is bullish on comcast. They stack up well against competitors as the broad band business barrons said should cord cutting customers accelerate they will win over customerings quickly as well. Do you own comcast we do own comcost we like barrons. You think cbs is a good play . Cbs made some changes and the stock has just dirt cheap and comcast has done well, cbs has done so horribly, if you have an 18 month time rise, stock could be 50 to 75 higher because its so cheap they will be a player eventually we think the combination is a good thing so we like that here as well. Wow so comcast and cbs as well now, if it was an ugliest dog contest for the stock market it would have to be energy. These names have been left on the scrap heap as well but that has not alienated you from slb. Maybe for some clients because the stocks have been miserable. We think the stocks it had a bert than expected quarter friday we think the stock easily has 50 to 100 upside ultimately we do need drilling the supply demand is getting back into place. We think this is a very come peling risk reward we like the new ceo. By the way the biggest competitor is publishing numbers. When youp look at slb, how many do you think the oil and gas sectors pain has been caused by artificial, they wont own fossil fuel companies. They have been selling, selling, selling, because theyre no longer able to own fossil fuel companies. How much do you think has provided the medium term, ternl pressure on the names. We think the psychology is so low, and oil prices have given back a lot lately. Stocks have been miserable. Good to hear that somebody does love the ugly dog as well david katz, thank you very much. Always a pleasure. Have a great week, david. Meantime, companies have been tightening the pursestrings on i. T. Spending this yeerp amid the overall slow down in the Global Economy however, despite concerns about any recessions and cutbacks in discretionary spending, corporate i. T. Budgets are expected to rebound next year. Joining us now with an exclusive look new global i. T. Outlook is john lovelock. John, thanks very much for joining us right here on Worldwide Exchange. First off, before we get a little micro, whats the macro headline or two from your report well, brian, thank you so much for having me on today. And great day from florida great conference coming up the overall i. T. Spending, 0. 4 growth, its looking flat and looking like things are coming down, but partially thats the u. S. Dollar causing problem. 2. 3 growth in Constant Currency theres some growth around the world but the u. S. Dollar rise is masking that. Next year we get a bit more of a bounceback at the 3. 6 range going forward. Theres still some uncertainty causing people to keep their hands in their pockets, but mostly its about where the changes in i. T. Spending are happening that is really interesting in the forecast. Enterprise software remaining hot. Its sort of at the center of one of the big dilemmas cios are asked. Theyre asked to shift the company to be a Digital Business so software is at 10. 7 but Cloud Software is at 18. cloud i. T. Services growth 26. 3 growth so you can see we have the balance of the traditional business still deeming to be done Companies Getting on that new where is my techuilibrium point. So 10. 9 jump in Enterprise SoftwareEnterprise Software, john, is one of those terms we hear, sort of a macro thing, a major universe what inside of Enterprise Software looks the best. What kind of companies specifically are we talking about. Its really the core tractional software stuff, erp, crm, supply chain. Everything to do with running the business regardless of what it is. Within there, everything that is about getting your business out of the four walls and moving more towards digital is getting hot. Everything to do with the customer is blistering hot in this area. What looks blistering cold. What has been been frigid . Well, everything that is frigid is stuff that is still around the license Software Market even though theres still some growth in there, the fact that were now seeing a lot of new license renewed means that people will holding on to what they had but not investing in it new. More interestingly, were also seeing these guys getting out of the building with the license software, going to colocations, going to outsourcing, getting it into the cloud, doing lift and shift to get it out of their data center and run by cloud vendors. John lovelock, we appreciate it good stuff there watch the Enterprise Well see you soon on cnbc thank you for having me within. Coming up, if you have a big backyard and bigger imagination, our next story is for you. And good monday morning. And this, i think, is a really interesting real estate story because were seeing a big boom in a little type of housing. No, not little homes extra homes on your property diane joining us with more on the latest its not airbnb, for sheds . Throw grandma in the shed. Theyre not just the she sheds or the he sheds or the granny pods. States and cities relax zoning laws, more homeowners with extra space are buildings these auxiliary dwelling units thats the official name, adu for family members thats huge growth for prefab they expect to expand that to 1,500 next year and possibly 3,000. As for pricing, most common product at prefab is 288 square foot home which goes for 105,000 installed inquiries are split probably 50 50 from people who are looking to address housing for family members, whether its Adult Children who are struggling to survive or its a Senior Family member who is weighing this against the cost of doing assisted living and then we have other people who are looking for the rental income. Rental income was the goal for lisa and chris they built this adu in the backyard of their washington, d. C. Home. And are now renting it on a monthly basis. Eventually they may live in the adu themselves and rent out the larger home for even more. We lived in it for ten months while we renovated our main house, and we loved it like i was kind of sad to move back in our main house, thats how much we loved it. So you feel like you could retire in that house definitely. Zoning rules changed in Portland Oregon the number of permits jumped from 80 to 616. In california a law forced cities to relax regulations adu permits jumped 30 fold brian . Two things here, number one, did you just make up granny pods thatsa thing thats a total thing. You sure thats a thing i think its a jane wells did a story out west a while. When i start my punk rock band it will be called granny pods you gave me my band name i have to imagine neighbors wont like this. Some neighborhoods you cant change your mailbox without the Homeowners Association getting worked up because you have the jerk down the street who gets bad about everything now you have someone living in a granny pod in your backyard . The zoning rules have changed because think about how lucrative property is becoming, how expensive homes are, how hard it is to find a home. Then you see your property is becoming more and more valuable because you can use it as an income property, it is starting to make sense in more communities. I talked to this couple about it and they said they hadnt seen any pushback in their community. Its a very nice d. C. Area they said, in fact, people were interested to see it and perhaps copy all right well, we need to do a monthlong piece, living in one of these things it was cute it was very cute did you see it its adorable. Food. I was eating raccoon for dinner. I like it thank you very much granny pods. Lets find out what else besides granny pods youll be talking about today. Time for this mornings top trending stories i think rahel solomon, diana made that up. No, i think its a thing. I think it would be more interesting to see you in a granmy pod because youre 68. Im not 68. Im not 68. Youre up there. Thank you. No granny pods but bootleg movies a number of websites depicting bootleg offers hbo and netflix and the ads that fund that site come from names like pandora, hulu, tick tock and walgreens and many of the companies pulled the ads after contacted by cnbc.
