CEBU CITY - Cebu province, which is along the path of Severe Tropical Storm Odette, began bracing for its onslaught as 30 localities were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 on Wednesday. Governor Gwendolyn Garcia on Tuesday night issued a memo addressed to 44 mayors in the province, enjoining them "to take all the necessary precautions and preparations for (the storm's) arrival)." "The suspension of work and other measures may be implemented by the local chief executives concerned, as the need arises," Garcia's memo read. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has pre-positioned its personnel and response equipment in the northern and southern staging areas. Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officer Nagiel Banacia said the evacuation of residents in Olango, Cebu City's island group, would continue. "At least 20 evacuees from Caobian Island arrived in Mactan this 10 p.m. (Tuesday). Eight of them are children and three senior citizens," Banacia told the Philippine News Agency (PNA). Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) - Mactan chief, Alfredo Quiblat Jr., said in a radio interview that they have conducted a pre-disaster briefing with Cebu's local government units. "Listen to your local disaster managers for guidance and warnings," Quiblat said. Apart from the 30 localities in Cebu, PAGASA also placed under Signal No.1 the provinces of Bohol, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Southern Leyte. (PNA) }
