Cathedral City's 'Rainbow Crossing' restored to honor late Mayor Greg Pettis
Cathedral City councilmembers and residents gathered Saturday to honor the late Mayor Gregory Pettis by restoring the Rainbow Crossing street painting.
Pettis, who died at the age of 63 in 2019, was the longest-serving member of the city council. He was the first openly gay candidate to run for office in the Coachella Valley.
Rainbow Crossing is a rainbow-painted crosswalk at the intersection of Highway 111 and West Buddy Rogers Avenue. Pettis pushed to create the crossing in 2016 as part of the Cathedral City LGBT Days.
"The Rainbow Crossing was the first of its kind in the Coachella Valley that symbolizes the city’s celebration of diversity," Cathedral City communications manager Chris Parman said.
