Cash, checks stolen from SUV while couple in church or dining
A Newport couple attending Mass and a chicken barbecue Saturday afternoon at St. Anne Catholic Church had their 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe broken into and cash, checks and checkbook stolen while they were in church or dining.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the theft occurred between 4:25 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, 2420 N. Dixie Hwy. About $500 in cash, a checkbook and three checks that were already written out, including one for $3,800, were missing from the sport utility vehicle were missing when the couple returned, a deputy’s report said. Entry was gained by breaking the passenger side window.
