Callahan maintained fixed-station transmitters for Army in Okinawa

Life as an adult began to take shape for Mel Callahan following his graduation from Sullivan High School in the spring of 1961. He was hired as a printer's devil with a local newspaper, performing a variety of tasks from cleaning floors to getting supplies such as ink. Having developed an interest in the print trades, he enrolled in a Linotype training course at the University of Missouri.
