Record highs for both the s p 500 and the nasdaq 100. The first since july investors bidding stocks higher on a wave of macro uncertainty being lifted around trade, the likelihood that there will not be a no deal brexit, plus earnings season. Its been good enough to send stocks to record highs. We have haven bonds trading lower along with gold. The 10year yield up five basis points. Here are some of the big movers on the day. Tiffany up 31 . Its best day back to 1987. 120 per share bid by lvmh. Lvmh may raise their bid, or other bidders may emerge. Fitbit up 22. 9 . This on a report that google has offered made an offer for fitbit. Liberty Property Trust up 15. 6 , this as prologis is buying this industrial reit. This may interest you, vonnie. We had record highs last week ahead of this week, and that is in the value sector. We are looking at the s p 500 in blue. We have talked about the rotation index into value. Last week, that value index reaching a record high. It is worth noting, we heard ist week, the Fourth Season normal to happen, as investors try to lock in some of the growth stock gains and go to defense. Also take a look at some other movers within the chicken space. Tyson foods, pilgrims pride, sanderson farms. Its best day going back to 2008 on the news that china says it is repaired to lift its ban on u. S. Poultry, one that has been in place since 2015. They think these companies could benefit if this ban is lifted on u. S. Poultry. Vonnie thank you for that. Another extension. The u. K. Got the ok from the European Union to delay brexit by three more months. Now Boris Johnson has to get parliament on board. Now lets get to emma chandra at westminster. She is joined by a member of parliament. Thank you. I am joined by tobias ellwood, conservative mp. Thank you for joining us. The big moment we are waiting for is this vote later in the house of commons brought by the Prime Minister, asking mps for the third time for an early general election. We are hearing the arithmetic is not looking good. Perhaps you could tell us whether or not he expect to win the vote. Tobias i come here every monday looking at the week, thinking here we go again, more brexit. This week feels different. You are right, we have this vote coming up, we need two thirds to go through, but its an indication of where we want to go. What we have is a deal approved by the eu. Tacitly by some of the labor mps, gone through second reading. Parties, thetwo liberal democrats and the s p, saying lets call for a general election. What we need to work out is whether we can complete the scrutiny of the bill itself prior to the general election, or does the general election come first. Emma things may be moving but it doesnt look like mps are willing to give Boris Johnson exactly what he wants, which is the early general election. The lib dems and the snp may be moving toward an early general election but they want to do it on their terms. That may mean that we look at a another vote tomorrow with a slightly different consideration. Is that more likely than what we may see this evening . Tobias there needs to be an outbreak of common sense in parliament. We have not seen that in three years. The difference with tomorrows vote is it is a simple majority. Simply saying, calling for a general election. The liberal democrats want that as well. I dont like the idea of going into a general election. To discuss financial services, education, policing, all of these important things. Instead, all im going to get is, what is going on with brexit . It will muddy the waters on the election outcome. Emma you want a general election, but you would like brexit to be resolved in parliament before hand. If the government has to compromise and work with liberal democrats, that that general election will not happen. For you, that play out as an mp and for the conservative party . We already have a Prime Minister who did not deliver on his promise to be out by the 31st. Tobias all of that is correct because we dont have a majority. We are not supposed to have a general election until 2022. If we cannot get legislation through, if we cannot govern, then that reset button is the general election. We cannot get brexit through, so we have to look at the difficult decision. Here we have the liberal democrats and the snp wanting to have a general election. Lets break this gridlock and have a general election. Expectation is general election before christmas and then we sort of brexit . Tobias definitely one before christmas. We won the second reading of the withdrawal bill by 30 votes. We then did not get the scrutiny through. We lost that by 16. , hope in the next day or so labor will look at this, those who supported it, and allow us to conclude brexit. I think the nation would agree, to have a general election when you have not concluded brexit, after its been so emotional, it will be a tricky election itself. Everyone is so frustrated with the process. We need to move on. Emma thank you, tobias ellwood. Joining me here in westminster. Of course, we will bring you the latest as soon as we have that vote around 3 00 p. M. In new york. Vonnie getting underway in about two hours. Thank you. That is emma chandra in london. Path top, we works turn around. We will discuss how important valuation is to businesses looking to go public. This is bloomberg. Vonnie this is bloomberg markets. Im vonnie quinn. This week, we found that how the rest of the faangs fared. Tech is starting to make a comeback after lagging in the beginning of earnings season, but not all of them are moving together. It has been a pretty mixed bag with apple and google outperforming. Facebook, amazon, and netflix has lagged. Lets go to taylor riggs in San Francisco with a preview of what we should expect from alphabet. Taylor all eyes on alphabet today with ad growth and the cloud. Ad growth saw a big acceleration in 2018. A little slow down in 2019. Analysts hoping they can continue some of the momentum, even though it feels like a mature market. In the cloud, we know they are behind amazon and microsoft. It is about how they will be making gains in the cloud. Then we got the news about fitbit which shows googles increasing push into the hardware space and the wearable space, which seems to be the future of the growth of the company. Facebook and apple coming on wednesday. We highlight all of these Tech Companies because they are making up an increasing portion of the overall s p 500. That index is now all tech and communications companies. When these Companies Report earnings, it has an outsized impact on the broader market, and what that means for performance, you cannot treat all of these faangs names the st. Peter you have seen a divergence in performance. Apple and google have been out performers recently. They have not been hit by these antitrust concerns. Facebook is the numberone underperformer on antitrust. Amazon last week lowered next quarters guidance, missed on profit. Cloud does continue to be a bright spot. Netflix, we know the story, a wide range of competition issues. That stock is in underperformer as well. Vonnie taylor, great work on a stranger faangs. Tune in later on, taylor will be hosting. Softbank unveiling a bailout for wework last week, rescuing the company from bankruptcy. Guest says that the company will stay around, but needs to find the valuation that make sense for investors. Joining us now is rajarshi ganguly. You founded in 2015. Talk to us about wework. What is a correct valuation, why did this go so wrong . Has fundamentally changed the way people work. It is a Great Company had a right price. Softbank are great investors, so they would not have put this money and if they didnt think there was a future for wework. I will stay away from trying to determine what is the right valuation for it. Not 40, 40 5as billion, but the company has a lot of room for growth, new markets to enter. Im a fundamental believer that wework will be stronger year from now than it is today. Vonnie we shall see. We can all agree it was a bit of a mess. Obviously, there is some value because we are talking about structures, people, rents. Fund. E a global tech vc you talk to investors. Are they getting more skittish now that we have had so many failed ipos . Public markets matter. Only a small portion of Tech Companies mexico Public Market. We take our guidance from the Public Markets, and we think we know what they want. They want profitability, recurring revenues, things that are assigned to good, profitable businesses. Unfortunately, some tech tooanies have ipoed quickly without the fundamentals of what the Public Markets are looking for. Im a believer that these companies will get there and are still great investments today. Ultimately, these are companies we use every day. Vonnie it is not just Public Market investors. It is also management of companies who feel like they have a product that have a grade valuation. But they are also becoming more reluctant to go to the Public Markets because the bubble has popped, right . More and more entrepreneurs are rethinking the markets. It is a really expensive process to go public. 10 years ago, you would go to the valley and entrepreneurs would tell you that their goal was to be a public company, to ring the bell. It is less and less true today. A lot of companies believe that they will grow faster and stronger staying in the private markets. There is more than enough capital in the private markets. Vonnie b capital has an interesting profile. In asia butargely not china. Have you noticed a difference since the china trade war started . We have all noticed since the trade war started. A few years ago, china was investing more than 50 billion into the u. S. Market. Today it is less than 5 billion. We are focused on enterprise technologies, crossborder, a technology that the u. S. Succeeds at. China has been focused on consumer internet, but you can see, the enterprise layer is being built in china. Increasingly, it will be an important place for investors like us. We are cautiously optimistic that the trade war between china and the u. S. Will get resolved this year. Vonnie isnt better for other countries around Southeast Asia . Give us an example of some of the countries you are working with and how its impacting them, even currency wise. Shortterm, it is helping countries in Southeast Asia. That Foreign Direct Investment that is not coming to the u. S. Needs to find other places to go. We are investing in the just extent that is, payments companies, and many of them are starting to see lots of outside interest, not only from large u. S. Should tedious, but more and more from china, who are effectively locked out of the market in the u. S. We see a tailwind in the rest of asia from this trade war, but we ultimately believe it is best for it to be resolved. Vonnie what is the appetite for u. S. Investment funds, endowments, to invest in venture , given thepanies negative press. Ultimately, the investors we have take a longterm view that we are less than 1 of the way to see the real impact of technology. As long as you have a longterm perspective, shortterm fluctuations in the Public Market these are companies that are being built compared to 2000 have real revenues, real profits. They have customers that have loyalty to these companies. They are not leaving. Very different in 2019. We believe it will be that way. Vonnie good luck. I know that b capital is on another venture to raise funds. Thank you for joining us. Still ahead, we are going to go to london. Boris johnson is speaking in parliament. We will keep an eye on what he is saying. E will be looking at that vote we will also be looking at the lvmh tiffany deal. This is bloomberg. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opening debate on the question of an early general election. He told parliament the opposition wants to delay or cancel brexit, but there must be a deadline for the brexit debate. He says we have an excellent deal for the whole of the u. K. He also said we must have december 12 as a hard stop. A vote will be taking place two hours from now on whether the general election will go ahead. If that does not pass, another will happen tomorrow. It is time for the bloombergquint take. The grounding of the 737 max is having an impact on the company and airliners. Boeing is more optimistic than anybody about the max. It is planning to return it to the Fourth Quarter returning to service in the Fourth Quarter. Southwest is not counting on the plane until february. Will passengers come back . A survey found that last spring, travelers would avoid the max six months after the first flight resumed. Andica says executives staff will take the first flights before paying passengers. The grounding forced boeing to abandon its financial forecast for 2019, and has taken its 5. 6 billion writedown to cover costs. Canceled ore push back orders for the 737 max. Shares of tiffanys soaring today following a confirmed lvmh is offering 14. 5 billion for the jeweler. For the latest, lets bring in robert williams. Do we anticipate there will be a competing bid from another luxury brand . There has been no signs so far that a competing bid could come, but certainly the companies were clear this was a nonexclusive process that they were open to receiving other bids. Tiffany has not given a response offer 14. 5 billion dollar that lvmh has put on the table. Vonnie lots of cash in lvmh. Absolutely. This would be the largest luxury deal in history at this price. Even if tiffany seems to be holding out for something higher, the price is already skyhigh. Unclear who could compete. Vonnie does lvmh have its eyes on Something Else . Is it specifically looking to get into the u. S. . Strengthening the u. S. Is a priority. We have seen Luxury Brands activating this market more. Hermes was Opening New Stores in San Francisco. Lvmh is getting ready to do a runway show for dior in miami. It is a market they are trying to reactivate. They dominated the market for years, and then things shifted to china. Is an interesting space. Of course, not potential to develop tiffany abroad, come up with ways to better use markets, is certainly one of the big attractions. Vonnie the importance of china as well to tiffany and the other Luxury Brands. Thanks to robert williams. We will continue to monitor this potential deal. Lets take a look at the data. Just off of our highs of the session, the s p 500 up 17 points. The 10year yield at 1. 84. Microsoft having a good day on the pentagon contracts. This is bloomberg. Mark im Mark Crumpton with bloomberg first word news. House Intelligence Committee chairman adam schiff says the Trump Administration is building a powerful case for impeachment as former National Security advisor Charles Kupperman defied a subpoena today. This is deeply regrettable. He was compelled to appear by a lawful congressional just within the last few days, the District Court ruled the impeachment inquiry is perfectly valid. These are a few depositions designed to get an outcome that was predetermined. Every time we hear from a witness, every single witness that has talked to the president , every time they have said he has not the thing wrong, he is innocent of any charges. Mark two current National Security staffers are also scheduled to appear this week. It is unclear if they will appear. European Central Bank President mario draghi handed the baton in the form of a golden bill to christine lagarde, who will take the helm of the ecb this friday. Draghi spoke at an event in frankfurt, saying the euro area needs fiscal policy to support low interest rates, in order to make stimulus work. Lagarde joked she promised her staff never to use draghis famous phrase whatever it takes. Boris johnson is pushing for an early election to resolve the brexit deadlock. You are looking at parliament. There you see the Opposition Party leader jeremy corbyn. The house of commons will vote this afternoon on the Prime Ministers call for an election in december. The European Union voted to give the u. K. A threemonth Brexit Brexit delay. That will prolong the uncertainty for businesses and citizens but also removes the risk of a damaging no deal exit this thursday. Global news 24 hours a day, onair, and tictoc on twitter, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over 120 countries. Im Mark Crumpton. This is bloomberg. Shery live from bloomberg World Headquarters in new york, im shery ahn. Amanda im amanda lang in toronto. We are joined by our bloomberg and Bnn Bloomberg audiences. A return to argentina. The country rejects the andmarket incumbent macri tilts the nation back to more leftwing populism. Out of control. A Southern California brush fire that scorched more than 500 acres has forced mandatory evacuations from some of the wealthiest parts of the area. Insight on how insurers are monitoring the blaze. Potential big apple exodus. Despite two centuries of history , jpmorgan maybe pulling up stakes and considering relocating several thousand rein in costselp ahead of a possible economic downturn. A quick checket on where markets are trading in the afternoon session. Stocks and record highs with the s p 500 gaining 0. 6 . It has really taken out its july record. Communication and tech stocks leading the gains. The nasdaq also gaining ground for the fourth consecutive session, higher by 1 . The dow is also gaining about 100 points. We see energy weighing on the has turnedwti crude lower for the first time in five days. We are now seeing signs of expanding u. S. Crude stockpiles. Look at what the pound is doing, stronger against the u. S. Dollar, this after the European Union agreed to a brexit deadline extension of three months. You are taking a look at live pictures of the u. K. Parliament. Jeremy corbyn speaking at the moment. We had heard from Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier, saying the opposition wants to delay and cancel brexit. The Prime Minister says there must be a deadline for the brexit debate, and that they must have a december 12 deadline as a hard stop on the brexit debate. We know the Prime Minister wants to trigger an early general election. We will get that vote in about one hour and a half. Amanda we are watching that. Also watching some stocks on the move. Both of them are story stocks today. Reuters is reporting that google may have taken a run at fitbit. Google has been acquiring companies that gather different forms of data. Something that many of these companies have done, to the consternation of some with regard to antitrust. Microsoft, of course, we knew this last week, that it had bested amazon and a pentagon contract. Considered controversial in some ways, but you see a boost for the stock intraday. That is a record high for microsoft. Parts of the text of the first phase of the deal with the u. S. Are basically completed. We heard President Trump this morning sharing positive sentiment on the talks. We are looking probably to be ahead of schedule to design a big portion of the china deal. We will call it phase one, but it is a big portion. Any kind of deal is a big welcome for u. S. Businesses. Showed companies are reporting negative effects already from tariffs. International our and economics correspondent michael mckee. Companies already feeling the effects. The hope is that this is a shortterm thing. You have watched this so closely. How optimistic should we be based on what were hearing today . Mike i would not be overly optimistic or pessimistic. What we are seeing is the president and the chinese spending this in a positive way, which has happened before. That doesnt mean that it will not come together, but we have not seen the text yet. While mostly completed, it is not guaranteed. Dont go too far with it. Take it for what it is, the possibility of something good. On the other hand, this only takes us back to where we were before the president started the trade war. The economy will not be necessarily better off. That is reflected in that survey, which shows a third of companies being affected by tariffs. By industry,t goods producing industries, more than two thirds say that tariffs are hurting their businesses. More of those firms say they are not changing any plans when it comes to hiring, so perhaps reflective of the tight labor market. Mike fewer companies are reporting they will add workers, which is a bit of a problem. It doesnt bring it down based on why in other words, can they find the workers, although they report finding high skilled workers these days. It may be that they are just finding it harder to justify expanding with all of the uncertainty. What we have also seen, according to the survey, fewer companies are giving wage increases, and fewer Companies Reporting that sales are rising. ,verall, a general slowdown according to the companies responding. We were thinking about what may happen from here, to your point, we are getting good news on top of my pile of bad news. That is good perspective. But for businesses that have had their confidence weakened by all of this uncertainty, who may be sitting on cash and not making investments, could we get an injection in the economy at the right time . A push to invest when the economy needs it . Mike analysts say that is not likely. This phase one agreement that the president is talking about would only take us back to where we were, still leaves all of the place, and the possibility of trade wars with other countries in place. There doesnt seem to be a relief coming in that area. Would want tos see that this actually makes a difference, that the chinese followthrough and buy the things that they say they are going to buy. The general feeling among analysts is it will take about one year for companies to believe, if we get a deal, that it is in place and will last. Dont expect an immediate turnaround in corporate spending. Shery michael mckee, thank you for the latest on the china trade negotiations, as well as its impact on the u. S. Economy. Fernandezna, alberto strolled to victory in the president ial elections. It was an expected outcome. Investors are now keen for clarity on policies. For more insight on the challenges ahead for argentinas economy, lets bring in shamalia khan. Always great to have you here. Lets get started with what was actually the news. We saw the august primary and the expectation was for Alberto Fernandez to win, but we got a split congress. What does that mean for investors . Shamalia a couple of things that were important. One was the gap between macri and fernandez was not as much as expected. That is important because it shows a significant portion of argentinians voted for economic policies. The fact that the congress will be split, the senate is also not going to have an outright majority, is going to be an important curve unpopulist policies. Popular populist policies. There was also a meeting this morning which bodes well for an orderly transition. Amanda the next order of business is likely to make a plan to the imf, bondholders. What needs to be established about where this government will go . Ismalia absolutely, that what the market is waiting for. We were hoping to see quickly some announcement on the president s cabinet, indications of economic policies. We have not heard anything but that is what the market is watching. We need to see a commitment to reform, continued fiscal adjustment, and desire to negotiate with the imf and bondholders. Shery we have seen in the meantime, they have been hemorrhaging cash. This chart showing the dwindling reserves of the argentinian central bank, this as we see these strict currency controls. What does the future hold as we continue to see these economic challenges, and what can fernandez do to mitigate them . The liquidity situation of argentina is quite concerning. The heavier capital controls are in place to give them time to come up with an Economic Policy that can address these issues. What we need to see is a more pragmatic stance from fernandez over the coming hours, days, weeks, in terms of his policy announcement, so policy can be confidence can be restored into the economy, with bondholders and the imf. Amanda the tightness of the race means there will be more balance between the two. That means less populism, perhaps. Does that also mean an inability to move quickly . Shamalia to the contrary, the composition of the legislative body implies there is a fair segment of moderates in the bodys to help fernandezs policies if he wants to. I believe the governors would also be supportive of such policies. It mean withoes ongoing negotiations with the imf . One of the key reasons macri lost the election, he lost support by going back to the imf, when argentinians did not want to see that. Shamalia that is true, and the leader of the program will likely change to a longer dated program, which will give them some liquidity relief. This program may be more focused on passing reforms and may give them more breathing room on the fiscal side, which will help them maintain the social. Amanda how quickly does anything have to happen from the markets point of view . Shamalia really quickly. The markets are disappointed today. Everyone was expecting fernandess victory in the first round and we were hoping to see announcements on the Economic Policy as well as cabinets. We have not seen that yet and it has not even been 24 hours, but that is how quickly the market wants to see more announcements. Amanda great to have your thoughts, sean miller con. Thank you. Shamalia khan. Wildfires raging across california from los angeles to wine country. Why high wind has Utility Companies forecasting more blackouts. This is bloomberg. Shery this is bloomberg markets. Im shery ahn in new york. Amanda im amanda lang in toronto. California is in a state of emergency. Much of the state without power, hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated, as wildfires rage from los angeles to northern california. Violent windstorms have fan the blazes, and more are forecast to hit tomorrow, prompting utilities to warn of even more blackouts. A Senior Analyst for bloomberg covers the Insurance Industry. Obviously, for Insurance Companies, many of them still dealing with 17 and 18 in the same area. In terms of the scale of the size, how does this compare to recent years . 2017, we had two large fire systems in sonoma county, the first was the tubbs fire. That threatened wine country, some highvalue homes. We also have the atlas fire. Losses there were about 3. 5 billion. If you look at the kincade fire going on now, as well as the tick fire in los angeles, insured losses in the singledigit billions could be on the table depending how badly the fires spread. Shery how manageable when this event be, given all the other losses we have seen this year . Matthew pretty manageable. The Insurance Industry in the u. S. Is wellcapitalized, and they have also been stepping back in catastrophe prone regions, also buying reinsurance protection, which is insurance for Insurance Companies. Amanda you wrote about that today. We can talk about this in the business context. Of course, there are real human beings in the middle of this suffering. Many of them are finding themselves uninsurable. One of the strategies for Insurance Companies is not to renew. How big of a problem will that be for this region . Certainly. There is something called the fair plan in california. If you cannot get insurance through a private regulated carrier, you could go to this alternative market. And while fire prone areas, now, policiesnd there have almost doubled. Rates have gone up almost 300 . For some, it is becoming an uninsurable risk. Shery what insurers are being exposed at the moment . Arehew the biggest ones state farm and farmers. Also exposure at allstate and travelers. Are big players in highvalue homes. To the extend those homes are impacted, they will be impacted as well. Amanda is it possible to measure the possible effect on these companies or is it too soon to know, including with the unpredictability of containment. Matthew probably too soon to say. You can gauge probably the industry level, which im pegging at that mid singledigit billions, but even that is still in the air depending on containment efforts, how far the fire spreads. Shery we have seen utilities reacting to these potential buyers with massive blackouts. How have insurers in the state been reacting . Matthew insurers have been pulling back. They are sending more policies to the fair plan. People are very critical to the utilities, saying they are not doing enough to prevent it, and that is why youre seeing them react in this way. This is ae behind little more concrete than in hurricanes, that Climate Change is having an impact on the state, making it more conducive to wildfires spreading. Amanda one of the areas hit, wine country. How much of this was hit in 2017 . Matthew a significant amount hit in 2017. It is still a little far away from where the tubbs fire was, but the potential to impact some of the same areas. Shery matthew, thank you. Is shrinkingmorgan its new york city workforce, but if not the big apple, where love they go . We will discuss next. This is bloomberg. Amanda this is bloomberg markets. Im amanda lang in toronto. Shery im shery ahn in new york. Jpmorgan has long been a staple of new york city banking, and it is still plenty to build its new headquarters in the city. The new yorker feels to be losing its luster as the banking giant waste shifting thousands of employees to a more business friendly environment like texas. Here with us is michelle davis. Wasnt it just last year that jamie dimon said they were committing themselves to the city again . Hugemorgan announced this headquarters of they would be park, jamie270 dimon said that they were recommitting themselves. In that year and a half, they been building up operations in some lowercost areas like plano, texas, where they have this huge cancerous campus. This summer they started work on a new one. Future, it seems like they will have the same amount of employees in texas as they do in new york. Amanda of course, this is part really sinceing on the electrification of the new york stock exchange, banks started moving to new jersey, away from the downtown core. Into context with other banks and what they are doing. This is part of a bigger trend. Michelle absolutely. As you mentioned, we have seen banks like goldman sachs, goldman, moving to other locations. I should mention, jpmorgan seemed to buck the trend. In announcing their headquarters last year, said they were recommitting to new york city. But according to my sources, once that amazon deal fell apart , that was supposed to bring thousands of highpaying i. T. Jobs to the area. Wasrnally, as the bank reevaluating its location strategy, amazon deciding not to theq2 here, that killed opportunities in new york. Jpmorgan had been banking on amazon flooring a lot of tech talent, they were hoping to poach from that same pool. Now it is not as likely. Shery we mentioned the texas what other alternatives are out there . Michelle moving employees to ohio, delaware. Delaware is where they have had a lot of these employees. I hear that they will be moving some junior Investment Bankers and even a whole Credit Risk Team is being moved there now. We have heard they are madison,ng selling 383 their Investment Banking headquarters for a decade. Again, still very much in flux. They have not made formal decisions on how many people will be in new york. It is a big change for a bank that has been associated with new york since 1799. Amanda great story, michelle davis.
