The superintendent of an Edmonton-area school division says it hoped to proactively short-circuit rising COVID-19 case numbers in some schools by temporarily moving older grades to online learning.
The Black Gold School Division sought permission from the province last week for a two-week shift for Grades 7 to 12, citing a shortage of substitute teachers amid a rise in COVID-19 case numbers.

The request was rejected by Alberta Education for all but one of the 32 schools in the division south of Edmonton. Thorsby Junior-Senior High School began online learning Monday.
