Thorsby high students temporarily move to online classes

Thorsby Junior Senior High School students have temporarily moved to online classes because of the numbers of staff and students in quarantine and a shortage of substitute teachers.
Students moved to online learning on April 26 with the intention to return to in-school classes on May 10.

“This decision was not made lightly,” said Superintendent Bill Romanchuk in a news release.
“However, with so many students and staff in quarantine or in isolation, a chronic shortage of substitute teachers, and spiking COVID cases in our communities, we believe this measure is in the best interest of both students and staff and to ensure continuity of learning.” ....

BGSD board votes to not pilot draft curriculum

At a special meeting on Thursday, April 22, the Black Gold School Division (BGSD) board supported administration’s recommendation not to pilot the draft K-6 curriculum.
Following the release of the draft curriculum, BGSD gathered 52 teachers from within the division to do a thorough review of the curriculum and provide feedback. In an effort to be a part of the curriculum development process, the report will be shared with Alberta’s education ministry.

The superintendent of an Edmonton-area school division says it hoped to proactively short-circuit rising COVID-19 case numbers in some schools by temporarily moving older grades to online learning.
The Black Gold School Division sought permission from the province last week for a two-week shift for Grades 7 to 12, citing a shortage of substitute teachers amid a rise in COVID-19 case numbers.
