The 6.5km cycleway connects Waterloo station to Taita.
“It really is right down the spine of Lower Hutt, along the rail corridor. It’s been a pretty positive outcome that we were able to use that space.”
The council’s next focus would be on developing safe connections to the cycleway from suburban streets, he said.
“The key is that we need to create better connections onto the Beltway itself. There are some pinch points and challenges in our suburbs,” he said.
The Beltway cycleway is one of several major projects for cycling and walking currently uderway in the Hutt Valley, including Te Hikoi Ararewa (Wainuiomata Hill Shared Path), Te Ara Tupua (Ngauranga to Petone Shared Path), and the Eastern Bays Shared Path.
