BELLEFONTE — Although the snow was falling outside, the Bellefonte school board met for a special work session to discuss the district’s mascot on Tuesday night.
For several months, the Red Raider mascot has been under fire by a handful of community members who view the district’s mascot and nickname as offensive.
Tuesday’s 90-minute meeting gave the opportunity for each board member to voice their opinion.
Board member Rodney Musser, who has spearheaded a potential mascot change, was the first to speak.
“Recent emails dictate that I believe we need to have this discussion, regardless of the outcome,” Musser said, “because I believe the community is a bit confused as to what education is to all of our students. I don’t want to dive into details of the conversations, but at some point, I think we need to establish an end to the discussion … I believe the community needs to be educated.”
