And the last time the nhs met 62 Day Cancer Treatment target was nine years ago, in 2015. Joining me now is Matthew Hulbert from the just treatment campaign, his motherjackie died after an 11 Hour Ordeal waiting for an Ambulance to come after a fall. Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us, and im sorry that your mother had to go through that ordeal. It is an ordeal that you are still campaigning about, thinking about everyday, im sure. What is your response to what you have heard . I know you are particularly interested in what is going to happen with Social Care, because, as i understand it, you think that lay behind theissue it, you think that lay behind the issue with your mother having to wait for so long to get an Ambulance. Get an Ambulance. Good afternoon. Get an Ambulance. Good afternoon. It get an Ambulance. Good afternoon. It is get an Ambulance. Good afternoon. It is good get an Ambulance. Good afternoon. It is good to l get an Ambulance. Good l afternoon. It is good to be with you and responding to the report today. You are absolutely right, it turned out that the issues with Social Care were crucial to what happened to my mum, because basically the issue over the theissue basically the issue over the the issue had been that Ambulances were backed up outside the local hospital, unable to off load their patients. They were unable to do that because they were patients that were well enough to go home in hospital but we did not have a Care Package at home or in the community. So one Thing Led to another, led to another, which meant it was 11 hours before an Ambulance got to my mum. So the Prime Minister set out a number of options, and he said it wasnt an option to raise taxes, that people did not want to pay more taxes at this stage. How is this going to be funded . He talks about reform before any new funding. Is that the right way around . {iii the right way around . Of course. The right way around . Of course, there will always need to be reformed, but i would plead with the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary to think again in terms of taxation. I believe in progressive taxation. What that means is that those with the broadest shoulders, those most able to do so, pay a bit more to enable the nhs to be properly funded. Although the right of politics will see that the nhs has so much money put into it, i would argue that we are way off the european average, which would mean about £40 billion per year more into the nhs than is currently put into it. It is notjust about money, it is about reform as well. But i would plead with the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary to think again in terms of how we fund the nhs. It in terms of how we fund the nhs. ,. ,. , in terms of how we fund the nhs. ,. , nhs. It sounds as though the government nhs. It sounds as though the government wants nhs. It sounds as though the government wants to nhs. It sounds as though the government wants to keep i nhs. It sounds as though the government wants to keep a | nhs. It sounds as though the government wants to keep a very tight reign on public spending, it has made that clear from the outset, so why, some people may ask, would it prioritise spending more on the nhs at the moment, if it thinks reform can bring about those savings . Is that not going to happen quickly enough, in your view . It definitely is not going to happen quickly enough. As someone who has been through this devastating experience with the person i loved most in the world, to see her suffering on that Day And Pleading with me, when is help going to come, i dont think it should be a question of, we cannot find the money. Governments can find the money. Governments can find the money if they want to. Labour are right to say that the nhs is in this state because of 14 years of conservative underfunding, mismanagementand underfunding, mismanagement and privatisation, underfunding, mismanagementand privatisation, but the fact is they are in government now, so it is the choices they make that matter. I say again, i plead with them again to change their minds in regards to taxation. I know they want to be seen as politically and financially credible, but what price do you put on Peoples Health . ~ price do you put on Peoples Health . , ~ ,. , price do you put on Peoples Health . , ~ i. Price do you put on Peoples Health . , ~. , health . Thank you so much for talkin health . Thank you so much for talking to health . Thank you so much for talking to us health . Thank you so much for talking to us today, health . Thank you so much for talking to us today, about health . Thank you so much for talking to us today, about Youri Talking to us today, about your mum and what she went through, and your views on todays report. Thanks again. Thank you forjoining us, sarah. Just to pick up on what matthew was saying, i hope you could hear what he was talking about, he thinks that more money should be found, that reform will not happen quickly enough to make a substantial difference. How would you respond to that . Do you think he is right . I respond to that . Do you think he is right . He is right . I think we clearly need reform, he is right . I think we clearly need reform, and he is right . I think we clearly need reform, and what he is right . I think we clearly need reform, and what we i he is right . I think we clearly need reform, and what we heard from need reform, and what we heard from the need reform, and what we heard from the Prime Minister antrim the report from the Prime Minister antrim the report this morning is that our model the report this morning is that our model is not fit for purpose, we have to movable care purpose, we have to movable care into purpose, we have to movable care into the community and so on. Care into the community and so on It Care into the community and so on it is care into the community and so on. It is also right to say that on. It is also right to say that that on. It is also right to say that that doesnt happen without money. We have an ageing without money. We have an ageing population, more people living ageing population, more people living with long term conditions, so we need to recognise that if we are going to meet recognise that if we are going to meet the challenge, we need both reform and that doesnt come both reform and that doesnt come free of charge. You talked about challenge, come free of charge. You talked about challenge, change come free of charge. You talked about challenge, change and. About challenge, change and hope, and it is important that people have Hope And Faith that the sort of support they need will be there when they want it, the sort of support that matthew was looking for for his mum that day when she fell and had to wait 11 hours for an Ambulance. I will push you more on where extra money might come from. Its not all going to happen through reform, is it . No, its not. This morning was a stark no, its not. This morning was a stark and no, its not. This morning was a stark and honest assessment of where a stark and honest assessment of where we are. The sad truth is, we of where we are. The sad truth is, we all of where we are. The sad truth is, we all hear stories like you is, we all hear stories like you have is, we all hear stories like you have been talking about all the time you have been talking about all the time. Public satisfaction with the time. Public satisfaction with the the time. Public satisfaction with the nhs is at the lowest level with the nhs is at the lowest level it with the nhs is at the lowest level it has ever been. The nhs is not level it has ever been. The nhs is not currently working for so many is not currently working for so many people and behind every statistic many people and behind every statistic is a loved one, a patient, statistic is a loved one, a patient, a family having a rough patient, a family having a rough experience. So we need to change. Rough experience. So we need to change, and quickly. We have to recognise change, and quickly. We have to recognise where we do Need Money recognise where we do Need Money i recognise where we do Need Money. I think clearly in a state. Money. I think clearly in a state. We money. I think clearly in a state, we have crumbling buildings, we havent invested enough buildings, we havent invested enoughin buildings, we havent invested enough in technology that helps staff and the public navigate Services Staff and the public navigate services more easily. But we do need services more easily. But we do need to services more easily. But we do need to stop doing what we have done need to stop doing what we have done for need to stop doing what we have done for a need to stop doing what we have done for a long time, which is to put done for a long time, which is to put a done for a long time, which is to put a sticking Plaster Solution on some of the issues we face, solution on some of the issues we face, throwing money at hospitals last minute, in the winter. Hospitals last minute, in the winter. To hospitals last minute, in the winter, to open more beds or employ winter, to open more beds or employ more staff on a short term basis. We need to fundamentally say we have a different population than at the time the nhs was founded, with different needs, we need to shift with different needs, we need to shift more care into communities closer to home, embrace communities closer to home, Embrace Technology and prevention. Embrace technology and revention. ~. ,. , prevention. Would you agree that sorting prevention. Would you agree that sorting out prevention. Would you agree that sorting out social prevention. Would you agree that sorting out Social Care i that sorting out social Care Reform is going to be key to all of these other plans working . We dont have a lot of detail get, but would that be the key thing that would make a difference . It the key thing that would make a difference . Difference . It is one of the key things. Difference . It is one of the key things. It difference . It is one of the key things, it is difference . It is one of the key things, it is critical. I difference . It is one of the l key things, it is critical. Our key things, it is critical. 0ur social key things, it is critical. 0ur Social Care key things, it is critical. 0ur social Care System is not fit for purpose and at the moment we have for purpose and at the moment we have more people requesting help with we have more people requesting help with Social Care and fewer people help with Social Care and fewer people getting access to it, able people getting access to it, able to people getting access to it, able to access the social Care System able to access the social Care System. There is a human and real system. There is a human and Real Life system. There is a human and Real Life impact to that, and we need Real Life impact to that, and we need the government to tackle we need the government to tackle this head on and do it reasonably quickly, because in many reasonably quickly, because in many parts of the country, our social many parts of the country, our Social Care many parts of the country, our social Care System is in crisis social Care System is in crisis. We cannot keep the staff, crisis. We cannot keep the staff, there is limited access and staff, there is limited Access And Availability of care that enhances quality of life as well enhances quality of life as well as enhances quality of life as well as helps take the pressure of the well as helps take the pressure of the nhs. But it is notjust social of the nhs. But it is notjust Social Care, it is public health Social Care, it is public Health And Prevention and really Health And Prevention and really paying attention to the populations health, which has deteriorated on many metrics. We have deteriorated on many metrics. We have had a decade or so of stalling we have had a decade or so of stalling life expectancy. In some stalling life expectancy. In some parts of the country, in some some parts of the country, in some groups, it has gone backwards. So the government has to backwards. So the government has to take this holistic approach, prevention, the nhs, but also approach, prevention, the nhs, but also Social Care. But also Social Care. Finally and briefly. But also Social Care. Finally and briefly, the but also Social Care. Finally and briefly, the prime but also Social Care. Finally and briefly, the Prime Minister has made it clear it will take more than the term of one parliament to try to bring about all these changes. But when will people, do you think, start to feel that things are getting better, that they can getting better, that they can get that Gp Appointment without having to wait for too long . That they can get seen by a specialist in hospital, perhaps . Specialist in hospital, erhas . , m , perhaps . This is the difficulty the government perhaps . This is the difficulty the government faces. Perhaps . This is the difficulty the government faces. The i the government faces. The reform the government faces. The Reform Programme being talked about Reform Programme being talked about is Reform Programme being talked about is a Reform Programme being talked about is a long term endeavour. At the about is a long term endeavour. At the same time, we need to see improvements more quickly. There see improvements more quickly. There are see improvements more quickly. There are additional appointments in primary care that appointments in primary care that should help, but that is the tightrope that the government will have to walk. Doing government will have to walk. Doing the government will have to walk. Doing the long Term Change while doing the long Term Change while also delivering shorter term while also delivering shorter term benefits that people can feel and term benefits that people can feel and see and makes accessing care easier for people accessing care easier for people up and down the country. Thank people up and down the country. Thank you people up and down the country. Thank you very much for your time today. Pope francis has called on people to treat one another with fairness and without discrimination, during a mass in singapore. Its the first papal visit to singapore since Popejohn Paul the second in 1986. About 50,000 people filled the national stadium for the service. Pope francis said love was characterised by a deep respect for others, no matter their race or beliefs. He added that Singapore Society and the church should be united in solidarity, despite being ethnically diverse. Singapore is the last leg of a 12 Day Asia pacific tour. My colleague, steve lai, joins me now from singapore. Good to see you. The final leg of a 12 Day Trip for the 87 year old pontiff. Tell us more about that mass and the events surrounding it. The mass has ended and gradually moving into the after party, if you like. A concert has started, we have had dancers and singers on stage. Another act is about to do a performance, so i hope you can hear me. To reiterate what you were saying about the mass that took place, Pope Francis was administering it, the second time in 40 years that a pope has been to singapore, the last time was in 1986 Whenjohn Paul ii came here, only here for five hours. Pope francis has been here for three days. Very much the theme of his time here is about solidarity. You mentioned that earlier. He gave his homily in italian, thankfully we got a translation of that and we can decipher from that he was talking about solidarity. Singapore is a multireligious and multiethnic society. We had prayers in a variety of languages here in singapore. He was greeted at the Airport Bite four children from each of the major ethnic cities in singapore, greeting him with song as well. The songs are breaking out a rapid once again. Church masses are usually quite sombre, but the reception he received was incredibly warm and now it has become more of a concert vibe. You mention 50,000 catholics here, but this venue is where national days take place, Taylor Swift has performed here, as well as coldplay. Today, singapore was able to witness Pope Francis appearing and conducting a mass. Interesting to hear the social and political messages, i suppose, from the pope when he met leaders from society. Singapore is a Globalfinancial Hub and the pope is saying that special attention should be paid to protecting the dignity of Migrant Workers there. Thats right. That was a key message as well. He wants to focus on those more vulnerable in society, those lower down the social structure. He wants in society, those lower down the social structure. He wants to make sure they are cared for to make sure they are cared for and after, so they got a and after, so they got a mention in the homily as well. Mention in the homily as well. There was a song dedicated to there was a song dedicated to Migrant Workers before you came Migrant Workers before you came to me, which was performed on to me, which was performed on stage by some of the Priests Stage by some of the priests and catholic community here. So and catholic community here. So it is something that the pope it is something that the pope is mindful of, something that is mindful of, something that singapore likes to pay singapore likes to pay attention to. There has been a attention to. There has been a lot of synergies between the lot of synergies between the Popes Message and the Popes Message and the continued message that the continued message that the government likes to continue to government likes to continue to persist with, that in times of persist with, that in times of social and cohesion, effort has social and cohesion, effort has to be made to create dialogue. To be made to create dialogue. That is something the people be that is something the people be doing tomorrow, he is meeting doing tomorrow, he is meeting young people in singapore from young people in singapore from different religions and he will different religions and he will be doing that Tomorrow Morning be doing that Tomorrow Morning as one lower down in the last couple of hours, in the last couple of hours, 700 kilometres above our heads, 700 kilometres above our heads, history has been made, history has been made, with a team of with a team of privately funded astronauts privately funded astronauts making the first making the first commercial spacewalk. Those are the Three Points were there points were there as most risk to the astronauts. But agencies always make sure that safety is paramount, the Space Capsule have been tested and the suits as well, that all seems to have gone well. So to have all four astronauts exposed to space, all four of them were in these pressure suits. That has not been really done since the Gemini Missions back in the 19605, Gemini Missions back in the 1960s, when we were learning how to live and work in space. It is really good to see that this spacewalk appears to have gone successfully and the crew are safely back in the capsule. Tell me about these new spacesuits being used for the first time outside of a spacecraft. Much less bulky than what people expect. There are four on board polaris, and three other chinese Space Station. It is a sign of what is happening in low Earth Orbit, that this is opening up new opportunities. There will be new opportunities, new areas of the economy to develop. As we develop new materials in space, where you dont feel the effects of gravity, we can make things like Semi Conductors and pharmaceuticals that could potentially treat cancer in different ways. These are the developments we will see as low Earth Orbit becomes more commercial. It is one of the reasons the Uk Space agency is working towards a fully commercially funded mission in future. We have to bring in new investment and new ways of operating and as governments look to push the boundaries to return to the moon and perhaps onto mars. It was a big night for the Music Industry in New York with a host of stars turning out for the Mtv Video Music awards, or vmas for short. The biggest winner on the night was Taylor Swift, who left with seven prizes, giving her a record equalling Career Total of 30. She used the occasion to thank her boyfriend, the american Football Player travis kelcey, for turning everything to Happiness And Fun and magic. But while she urged her fans to register to vote, she didnt make any direct mention of her endorsement of Kamala Harris in the president ial election. Among our favourite performances on the night, katy perry, descending from the skies, to sing a medley of her hits, Sabrina Carpenter had a bit of a space theme, complete with aliens and astronauts, who did seem to be rather friendly. And Chappell Roan went for an epic theme, dressing in a Suit Ofarmour complete with burning castle, and an army of knights. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello again.
