Even before the outbreak of the war there were as many as 700,000 settlers living in the the occupied territory and since then radical israeli settlers have seized an opportunity to take more land from palestinians forcing many of them from their homes. Instead of traditional urban settlements, they are establishing what are called Herding Outposts , with the intention of controlling large tracts of land. While that is illegal in International Law, Bbc Eye investigations has found evidence they are supported by an israeli government funded organisation. Emir nader reports. Here in the occupied West Bank ayesha and her Husband Nabeel say theyre being forced from their home. This is the man shes accusing a settler named Moshe Sharvit. But Moshe Sharvit paints a different picture of his presence here. He lives in an unauthorised settlement in the West Bank. Its whats known as an outpost, illegal under both israeli and International Law, and outposts like moshe s, which are often farms, give Settlers Access to huge areas of land. Its outposts like these that are rapidly expanding since the beginning of the war in gaza, and are increasingly linked to violence and the Mass Expulsion of palestinian families, while pushing israeli settlements deeper into the West Bank and taking control over vast swathes of land. Bbc Eye Investigations has analysed data and verified the location of 196 outposts across the West Bank. Almost half were set up in the last five years. We join Ayesha And Nabeel again as they return home, two months after they were forced to leave. Moshe sharvit, the settler who they say forced them out, appears again. Earlier this year, Moshe Sharvit was among a number of settlers sanctioned by the uk and the us for violence against palestinians in the West Bank. Weve discovered how an israeli government funded division of the World Zionist Organisation has dealt with some of these settlers. Documents obtained by an Israeli Ngo show how the wzo has allocated large areas of the occupied West Bank to settlers. They forbid the building of any structures. But we found a pattern of settlers who have established their outposts on these lands. Its a body which runs very, very, very big part of a land which had been expropriated by the israeli authorities in the West Bank to defend israeli settlements or settlers. Neither the World Zionist Organisation nor the israeli government responded to our questions. Nor did Moshe Sharvit. So we went directly to his outpost. Despite international sanctions on settlers like Moshe Sharvit, they remain undeterred and increasingly powerful. Emir nader, bbc news. Dr Amjad Abu El ezz, is a professor of politics and international relations at the Arab American University in the West Bank. Just looking at that final scenes, you can see the israelis have weapons and you can also see through the film the vulnerability of people living in these rural, isolated areas. They are not allowed weapons because that would presumably give The Settlers in excuse to bring in the idf. Yes, good evening, first of all. As palestinians we live now in the Melee Area which contains like 70 of the West Bank. We live in Panic And Fear of the massacres that will take place soon at the hands of The Settlers against the palestinians who lives in this areas, isolated villages or areas, isolated villages or areas next to the settlement. There is a systematic policy, plan before and now they take it out for that they start to implement it underground. I would ask a question, why the eu until now did not use its levers to Sanction Israel because not even a Stop Funding Building Universities on palestinian land for the in 1960s. This is a lot of palestinians find that double standard and hypocrisy. If youre really interested in stopping The Settlers, now these illegal outputs in ten years will be billed as settlements was that these settlements was that these settlements will find schools and universities funded by the eu and funded of cooperation between eu institutions and these settlements. The Mobile Phone Companies are to meet with Government Ministers to discuss measures to stem the rise in Snatch Thefts, which have more than doubled in england and wales over the last year. Very often the phones are being grabbed in The Street, by people on mopeds and bikes. The government says the rise is down to an increase in demand for Second Hand smartphones both in the uk and overseas. Our correspondent Rowan Brige has the details. Quick, blatant, lucrative, and traumatic for its victims. Mobile phones are now the most stolen items in england and wales, according to the latest figures. Police intelligence suggest the problem is being driven by demand for Second Hand handsets in the uk and abroad. I was really, really upset, the fact that this has happened to me, you know, repeatedly over the past year, is just showing how much this crime is increasing in volume, you know. Its gone from being something that wasnt so common, to now, its almost a day to day occurrence. Lawrence is one of an estimated 200 people who are victims of Snatch Thefts every day. There were 78,000 phones or bags stolen in the year to march, but less than 1 of thefts resulted in a charge, and more than 80 were closed before a suspect was found. Phones get blacklisted in the uk once they get reported stolen. However, they do work in some other countries. Now if the criminals can get into the phone and then sell it off as a Second Hand device, then theyre good for that. But if they arent able to get into the phone for example, say the victim doesnt give up their apple id, for example then some of the materials, the metals inside, can be sold off themselves, or as parts themselves, because they are worth so much money. Phones like this already have some security features built in. Facial recognition to gain access, or the ability to wipe them remotely. But now the government wants the Phone Makers and the Tech Companies to go further, to make them less attractive to criminals to steal. Those companies and manufacturers are to be called to a summit by the Home Office to look at what more can be done. How many of us really hand on heart know what to do if our phone is stolen . Have we actually bothered to read what the mobile Phone Company will provide you with . Probably not. Its a case of working with those companies to see, you know, if your phone is stolen, can it be shut down completely so it cant be resold . As well as reading the paper work, there are some other things you can do to stop your phone from being snatched. Be aware of your surroundings when youre using a phone. When youre not using it, keep it Out Of Sight and never leave it out on the table in an outdoor restaurant or cafe. All measures which could help stop you becoming one of the rising tide of victims of phone theft. Rowan bridge, bbc news. So could we stop it . Dan sodergren is an expert on the future of technology. Good to see you. Work of the Phone Companies go with this . Im old enough to remember when the Mobile Phone was a smartphone for the that we know is Mobile Phones are tremendously important. This will be important in the future of our lives for a long time to come. The idea of bring your own devices to be a Tech Nightmare now everybody works on their Mobile Phone using Artificial Intelligence and all sorts of stuff is that i think Tech Companies can go a lot further with this idea of remote Kill Switch for the very surprise it has already happened. It blows my mind to think were now in 2024 and weve still got the same problem that was around in 2014 when the mayor of London Boris Johnson with them became Prime Minister, he brought this to our attention and said it was a terrible thing to happen. Theres a huge amount of money in the second Hand Phone Business without you do also wonder why that is the case for that we might be looking at not the cause of the crime for the crime. There is a technological thing you can do. What china did about these crimes is that uses Artificial Intelligence of Photo Recognitions at a lot of those crimes are disappeared because they are no longer worth doing. Pope francis has landed injakarta in indonesia for the start of an historic and ambitious trip to asia. These are pictures of Pope Francis being greeted at the international airport in the capital. Indonesia is the worlds most populous muslim . Majority country, and the pope is due to visit a mosque and a neighbouring church during his three days there. Our Correspondentjonathan Head has more on the Indonesia Stop of thiS Tour. He is continuing a long Standing Policy of the vatican of upholding the best possible relations with a country which in many ways as a model of multi faith tolerance. I mean, indonesia does have the worlds largest muslim population, but it is not an islamic state, islam is not the official religion. There are significant minorities, including around 8 MillionRoman Catholics, and the indonesian modern state has always accepted a place for all faiths, and so i think its always seen, given that its such a large muslim population, as a sort of showcase of how relations between different faiths can be managed, and in general, most indonesian governments have stuck to the secular origins of the modern country when it declared independence and made a place for all these religions, and the vatican has kept significant diplomatic representation there. Its been 35 years since the last visit of a pope, so this pope, Pope Francis, visits a very different country from The One that his predecessor but one, Popejohn Paul ii, visited back in 1989. At that stage, indonesia was still an authoritarian government, the issue of east timor, which is a roman catholic country, caused a lot of friction between the vatican and the then indonesian government. This time round, of course, Pope Francis will be celebrating the openness of indonesia, but that doesnt mean there arent problems between faiths in indonesia. Its always a sensitive issue, managing them, the issue of relations in different parts of indonesia between christian and muslim communities have been strained in recent years, where weve had the growth of, for example, islamic extremism in the region. Those are all factors that the pope will be very conscious of as he goes to these very symbolic, big meetings. The one at the Istiqlal Mosque tomorrow, the largest mosque in southeast asia, the main mosque injakarta, to highlight that sort of valuing these relationships between the different faiths, and then a big rally, a Big Mass to be held in one of the largest stadiums injakarta, to which Roman Catholics from all over indonesia, many of them are quite far flung islands, will travel to come and its probably for a once in a lifetime trip to see a pope. A new street in prague has been named after sir Nicholas Winton, the british man who helped Save Hundreds Of Mostlyjewish children from the nazis. The street is by a local Railway Station from where Tens Of Thousands of czechoslovak dues were deported during the holocaust. A number of children saved by sir nicholas were at the ceremony as our correspondent Rob Cameron reports. This document saved Milena Fleischmann from certain death. A pass, allowing a nine year old jewish Girl To Travel by train across Nazi Germany in august 1939, and start a new life in england. Milena, now Lady Milena Grenfell baines, had no idea then that it had all been arranged by a young stockbrokerfrom london. I think it is so important because you know, very soon, no eyewitnesses will be here any more, and people need to remember, why is that street called Nicholas Winton street . The story of how Nicholas Winton saved hundreds of children from the holocaust only came to light in the 1980s, thanks to the british Tv Programme thats life. Can i ask, is there anyone in our Audience Tonight who owes their life to Nicholas Winton . If so, could you stand up, please . Its since been told countless times, in films, documentaries and books, and now a new street, running past the very station where czechoslovakjews boarded trains for the camps. A ninth train, the largest transport, carrying 250 children, was scheduled for the 1st Of September 1939, but then, the war intervened and it never left. We dont know what happened to those children, but most of them would have been herded onto trains here at Praha Bubny Station and sent to theresienstadt and then to auschwitz. Only a handful are believed to have survived. Rob cameron, bbc news, prague. Extraordinary story and a great tribute. Queen camilla says king charles is doing very well with his cancer treatment. She made the comments during a visit to an Nhs Trust in bath which specialises in cancer treatment. The king is being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer and has been Receiving Care as an outpatient since early february. The queen was asked by a Charity Support Worker about her Husbands Health and gave a short answer . Yes, hes doing very well. We will take a short break. At the other side of the break we will have our panel. Hello. Today has been a very mixed Affair Weather wise across the uk. Weve seen some spells of warm sunshine in place, but also some sharp showers. High pressure, this big area of High Pressure tantalisingly close to us in the atlantic, but not quite close enough to kill off these various frontal systems, these old weather fronts, if you like, just bringing Bands Of Clouds and bits and pieces of showery rain, some clear spells in between. Itll be quite misty and murky in places. Not as muggy as last night across the southeast corner 14 in london, maybe dropping all the way to four in the highlands. So, as we head on into tomorrow, we will still have those old weather fronts bringing areas of cloud, some showers which will break out through the day, some heavy ones across eastern england. This cluster of heavy showers drifting southwards across scotland, but there will be one or two showers elsewhere, some spells of sunshine, too, and it will be quite a cool, fresh day compared with some weve had recently. 14 20 degrees covers things for most of us. Now, into thursday, this little Weather System here drops its way southwards and tends to combine with this broad area of low Pressure Spinning over continental europe, and that is going to bring some rain. In fact, could be quite a lot of rain that affects southern england, wales, the midlands as we go through the day on thursday. Further north, perhaps quite a lot of Cloud Feeding in, especially across eastern parts. Some spells of sunshine, particularly for Western Scotland and for northern ireland. Breezy, in fact quite blustery in the south, lighter winds further north and it will start to feel a bit more humid. That will continue into friday. Our low still swirling to the south, still bringing some outbreaks of rain, particularly across southern parts. But with the winds coming from the near continent where it has been very warm of late, it is going to feel really quite warm and humid as we end the week. So, friday looks like this outbreaks of rain, particularly across parts of southern england, the midlands, into wales further north. Areas of cloud, yes, but some spells of sunshine. And with that feed of humid air, we will see some pretty high temperatures on friday, widely into the 20s, Mid 20s for some including Western Scotland. We could get up to 25 degrees with some sunshine across that western side of scotland. What about the weekend . Well, still rather warm and humid, at least for a time. Some rain, particularly down towards the south, drier and brighter further north. Hello, im christian fraser. Youre watching the context on bbc news. Our determination to stand with israel, to be part of the collective defence if they come under direct attack again as they have done before remains resolute and absolute.
