he's there for two days, and the visit is aimed at strengthening ties with its southern neighbour. china is already vietnam's biggest investor. this year, registered investment from mainland china and hong kong combined doubled to more than $8 billion. that's compared to 2022 when pandemic restrictions were still in place in china. but with the us pushing to grow its influence in the region, beijing is also clinging to deepen relations with hanoi even further. raji biswas from s&p global market intelligence describes what's at stake for both countries. i think it's very much reflecting the importance of vietnam for china economically and of course it's an important neighbour as well. so, the political relationship, i think that will be important in terms of president xi's visit to strengthen bilateral ties further. but also, vietnam has become increasingly important in its own right as an export market for china. it's now the fifth—largest export market for china and it's grown tremendously over the last 25 years as vietnam has become more and more important as a manufacturing hub for other countries. so i think enhancing economic ties is going to be very much front and centre for president xi's visit. vietnam does have its own territorial dispute with china over south china sea. are you not concerned that those issues could kind of overshadow some of those economic agenda? i think this has for some years been worked through, and i think the focus of this visit will be very much on strengthening relations and to try and find ways forward to improve bilateral ties. so i think much of the emphasis will actually be to improve bilateral ties and supply chains. also, china wants to help vietnam in terms of infrastructure development, so that's going to be very much at the centre of discussion. let's stay with china. a new survey shows sentiment from the british chamber of commerce and industry. that is according to the annual report. it also shows that companies are still finding it difficult to operate in the world's second—biggest economy at a time of deepening property crisis, as well as strained geopolitical relationships. julian fisher is the chair of the british chamber of commerce in china and reacted to the report's findings. certainly, we were not surprised to see pessimism go down a little. last year in the depths of covid it was incredibly hard to do business. the one thing that surprised us was that 60% of businesses said that it was more difficult doing business now around october—november when we conducted the survey than it was a year ago. that has particularly hit the service sector especially. why is that? is that because of the worsening economic conditions or other challenges? there are three main areas. one, it's the chinese economy having an enormous impact. secondly, it's geopolitics — china's relationship with the uk and us, increasing nationalism. and finally, it's the global economy. for the service sector particularly, the backbone of the uk economy, there is less business activity and less mna, less to provide revenue for those services. are there sectors that are actually doing better in china? i mean, relatively s&b and retail are doing better than they were last year for obvious reasons because there was lockdowns and it was very hard for them to conduct business, but we are seeing real bright spots in energy and healthcare and i think that kind of mirrors a lot of the findings, which is where you are one with government initiatives and government demand, there can be positivity for business. obviously, china cares a lot about healthcare now and protecting young people and old people and in energy, they're looking for self—sufficiency. i want to ask about the recent appointment of former prime minister david cameron as foreign secretary. how do british businesses in china view that appointment? in the survey we asked what was the most positive action between the uk and chinese governments this year, and overwhelmingly, it was the visit of former foreign secretary james cleverly to the country. i think that it will be welcomed here, but ultimately, it's about engagement. will he visit the country soon? it's the second—biggest economy on earth, the second—biggest trading partner with the uk, so we hope to have quick engagement quickly, and that the elections next year won't postpone any visits both ways. let's update you with any other news making headlines. 100 jobs will be cut globally. the announcement comes a year after the maker after a
