sentencing laws, there is a measures to increase oil production in the north sea, and a phased ban on the sale of cigarettes. there will also be bills to pave the way for driverless cars on british roads, some reform of the leasehold property system, and a new system of governance for football. which gets my vote. but what about the rest of it? the king's speech is one of a dwindling number of set piece events that rishi sunak has to try to wrestle back momentum. is this, claire, the big bold vision for the country that will shift the dial? my government will continue to take action to bring down inflation, to ease the cost of living forfamilies, and held businesses fund newjobs and investments. so what do you think, claire? there are some simple _ so what do you think, claire? there are some simple things _ so what do you think, claire? there are some simple things in it, - so what do you think, claire? ti” are some simple things in it, sense of the measures but it wasn't that big bold vision, and neither was it really the political opportunity that the kings speech is, it was king charles his first speech, an opportunity for the government to set the political weather for the season and had, and while there were some things labour will probably vote for in the speech, there wasn't the sense of it government really resetting and for the context, where we are, it conservative government 13 years and, rishi sunak has been prime ministerfor a 13 years and, rishi sunak has been prime minister for a year, 13 years and, rishi sunak has been prime ministerfor a year, but it hasn't been the fresh injection conservatives hope they will get. he sentin conservatives hope they will get. he sent in himself as a country that needs change, but voters aren't buying he is a change they need, and i think the single we needed today was a lot more fresh, interesting policy, but we didn't see that, tinkering and sense of the measures on one hand, and other things on of that online, but i was thinking in terms of this being the first king speech, there must been part of it in which she was biting his lip, because we know how big he is on the environment, licenses for oil and gas to be given annually, i guess this is the way the british system works. the king reads out the speech and doesn't have influence over it, and doesn't have influence over it, and abides those measures, which themselves have come under attack notjust which themselves have come under attack not just from which themselves have come under attack notjust from the environmental lobby, but voters who are cynical about it because it is not clear you need new legislation to do some of the things the government wants to do, it seems like that government has run out of road on the economy and other important issues, trying to make the environments and election battleground, it remains to be seen whether it would be in his favour. it's interesting, mya's, the view from some commentators from the presidential election. so we are looking for clues. and while these state elections — and the issues on the ballot — cover a lot of ground there is one big theme running through it. abortion. in a state such as ohio, abortion is explicitly on the ballot. ohio voters will determine abortion access in a measure known as issue one, which would guarantee abortion rights in the state's constitution up to the point of foetal viability. in virginia, the voters are deciding control of the state house, but again it is abortion on the ballot. the governor glen younkin favours a 15—week bringing you different stories from across the uk. villagers who gathered to meet their mp in a pub car park in nottinghamshire havejust found out about the latest proposal for a solar park. the great north road scheme plans battery storage for the grid and a chain of what is called solar islands linked by underground cables serving the village. the majority of the community is not against solar but i think the dimension of this project is so huge and vast. the proposals cover dozens of villages, thousands of acres and will have a profound impact on landscape and quality of life of people living in this area. the company behind the plan says if it goes ahead they will pay £1 million a year to projects suggested by the community. this is just the start of a consultation which really gets going next year, and a nationally significant infrastructure projects with the final decision made by the secretary of state for energy. for more stories across the uk, head to the bbc news first team to seal their place in the champions league knockouts... they're currently 3—0 up against young boys... and guess who's back in the headlines for them. erling haaland was fit to start, and scored two so far— including this scorcher from long range, no chance for the keeper there — as the big norwegian looks to have shrugged off any injury concerns from the weekend.. phil foden with the other. as they look set to breeze the groups, and make it four wins out of four... moments to go there.. and celtic will want there match over as soon as possible. samuel lino looks to have scored the goal of the game with atletico madrid currently thumping the scottish champions 6—0 in spain. defeat would mean celtic have just one point from four matches. it was a disappointing night for newcastle united who earlier lost 2—0 to borussia dortmund in germany julian brandt with the second goal — dortmund have beaten newcastle both home and away in the group phase. in the evening's other matches they were beaten by shakhtar donetsk. to an absolute thriller at the cricket world cup now — where a spectacular double century from glenn maxwell saw australia clinch their spot in the semi—finals. they beat afghanistan, but it really was the maxwell show in mumbai... asjoe wilson reports.... somehow afghanistan it routines this flag and identity through cricket, only, it must be stressed, it merely cricket. in the workup they surprise, in mumbai, their budget said he was inspired by meeting such intend of the car, through 50 overs, the first afghan to make it world cup century. the team it. count the impossible, mexico's 31st boundary, 201, an australian record to win the game, that's all, joe wilson bbc news. that glenn maxwell double century guarantees australia a place in the cricket world cup semi finals but it will be remembered far beyond this tournament. the man with the best view in the house was maxwell's captain pat cummins who was batting at the other end from his cramp—stricken team—mate. he had this to say afterwards: i think that's the greatest odi innings i've ever seen. it's probably the greatest odi innings ever. we were just chatting about it, we all said it's one of those days where you say, "i was there in the stadium that day maxwell chased down that total by himself". yeah, i'm sure he will be fine. he had a cramp, but i think you saw out room for improvement — england's fielding coach is carl hopkinson the last few games i think we batted and fielded really well, i think bold and fielded really wet which put the teams under pressure, it comes onto execution, skill is it better, bolder, fielder, wejust haven't executed as well as we are known for doing so well over the last few years. after 22 matches unbeaten — and three tournament victories in a row — judd trump has finally been beaten — losing to stephen maguire in the third round of the international championship. no problems for ronnie o'sullivan though — who's into the last 16 — beating welshmanjakjones by six frames to four in china. o'sullivan will face scotland's anthony mcgill next. and that's all the sport for now. will be back with more later on, see you then. hello there. we've had good spells of sunshine today, a few rainbows close to the scattered showers which are now tending to ease away ahead of this mass of cloud. our next weather fronts and the attendant low pressure, which will bring all parts some wetter weather through tonight and into tomorrow and for a time, for a couple of hours, some strong winds, possibly gales in places. so the showers should continue to ease through the rest of this evening. temperatures fall away. touch of frost developing across the glens of scotland, and then the rain arrives in northern ireland before midnight crossing to scotland, wales and western england as we go through the small hours of wednesday morning, finally reaching southern and eastern areas towards dawn. so, eventually, temperatures rise again after that early dip. so, some quite miserable conditions for the morning rush across scotland, england and wales in particular. as well as the heavy rain, there'll be a spell of strong winds, hill fog as well. behind it, brighter skies follow quite quickly in northern ireland and then to scotland, much of england and wales through the afternoon, the rainjust drags its heels in southern and eastern areas. now, some showers will follow and they will be heavy. could be the odd rumble of thunder, wintry over the hills. it will feel a bit cooler with some blustery winds as well. but of course, the concern is with another 20—30 millimetres of rain or an inch thereabouts, we could see the current flood warning levels starting to rise once again. now, as we go through thursday, that weather front moves out the way and then this area of low pressure moves lots of showers across oui’ shores. so, it looks as if in southern parts with the strong winds, they'll move through quite briskly, but they'll still be heavy. that could become slow moving further north, and again, it's a slightly cooler air mass across the united kingdom, so it will feel a bit chillier, particularly with the winds. but there will be some wintriness in the showers over the hills through the night on thursday into friday. that low pressure pushes eastwards, taking shower activity with it, changing our wind direction for a time down to a north or northwesterly. so, even chillier, i think, for many of us on friday, but perhaps with fewer showers later on in the day as a ridge of high pressure starts to build — building in time for the weekend, which means there'll be quite a lot of dry weather, some sunny spells, but increasing amounts of fog and early frost. that fog takes a time to clear at this time of year, and then, before the end of sunday, it looks like we'll have more rain moving in and an unsettled spell into next week. at ten — we're live in southern israel, as the defence minister claims troops have fought their way into the "heart of gaza city." tonight, a rocket attack from inside gaza heads our way. despite weeks of pounding, hamas is still fighting. but the toll on gazans is immense, as rescuers dig out survivors from israel's latest airstrike. the world health organization says the level of death and suffering in the conflict is hard to fathom. all this, on the one month anniversary of the hamas attacks that killed 1,400 israelis. our other main stories tonight... fanfare the government's priorities have been outlined with pomp and ceremony at the state opening of parliament. my government will act to keep communities safe from crime, anti—social behaviour, terrorism and illegal migration. and these are the first remarkable images sent back from the euclid telescope — building up a 3d map of our cosmos. and on newsnight at 10:30... we'll go deeper behind the headlines and speak live to key players on today's big stories. plus — a first look at tomorrow's front pages.
