Through to bring aid and that all Water Supplies needed to be restored to gaza where physically possible. He also added that all sides should meet the sanctity of, importance of reaffirming support for a two state solution, it is a moment for care and caution, but also for moral clarity and a moment for humanity to win out against the scourge of terrorism and break the cycle of atrocity, that in words of the Prime Minister has written for a sunday newspaper. The un says its negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 to 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday, earlier, 20 trucks crossed into the strip from egypt the first since israel began its total siege of gaza 12 days ago. A585 people have been killed there in the last two weeks according to the hamas run Gaza Health Ministry more than 1,700 of them children. And israel says it is now preparing to step up its attacks on gaza to increase the pressure on hamas. The convoy which entered gaza earlier was carrying food, water and medicine, which have been running out in gaza. But israel refused to allow in fuel, which is needed to power Hospital Generators and water pumping stations. The un says at least 100 aid trucks are needed every day to cover gazas essential needs. Israel sealed its borders with gaza, imposing a total blockade on the strip 12 days ago following the hamas attack on israel in which 1,400 people were killed. The Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza is now the only way to get vital supplies in. 0ur reporter Rushdi Abualouf has the latest from the Rafah Crossing. The place where most of, all of the trucks that brought today are now in warehouse for the un. Drop in the ocean, everybody here is describing this aid but its hoped open for 2. 3 million people. A window open today 20s trucks carrying essential medical kit, including a portable Operation Room that should be placed in this hospital soon. You and make sure two things, the one thing is to make the priority for those very small amount of aid, second is to make sure that hamas is not involved in distributing or taking any of these. We understand from very early in the morning from a senior hamas source that hamas has agreed to some form of not intervening, the crossing is open from our side and we are not going to intervene. The un will handle the distribution of what they have today. Very small amount of medicine and food, and probably some medical equipment, but very big hope after that that egypt want sustainable humanitarian cord or to feed those that people who needin or to feed those that people who need in this area, especially the people in the southern part of gaza, the city we are talking about two thirds of the population in this area. We understand that more than 11500 area. We understand that more than a500 trucks and the other side of the border in egypt waiting for that meeting to finish and for the zone to be clear. 0nce everybody is happy with the outcome of that meeting, and the outcome of the first shipment, i think tomorrow or after tomorrow, if its a matter of time, we can see more and more goods and food are delivered, but for now we are certain to say nothing has been distributed, all of the 20 trucks that were loaded back to back on the no mans land between egypt and gaza, now in warehouse. We have to say today was relatively less fighting, less air strike and less hamas rockets into israel. And there is no official cease fire. We tried to ask hamas about this, we are not aware of any cease fire, but we know after covering two weeks of this war that today is different. Today, less fighting, less fire. Condition is, everybody here describes it as the biggest crisis that gaza has ever seen since 1967. This is what the director of this hospital who has run the hospital for the last ten, 15 years says. We have been through different wars, this is by far the worst one. He said we are struggling to find any sort of fuel, even if it is in the back of a factory, store it somewhere, a little bit of fuel and a petrol station, we buy any amount of fuel, anywhere, to keep this hospital running. We have to know that 600,000 people or more they are displaced from their house in the north, in gaza city and the north, and they are taking areas as their shelter. The city already offer, dealwith their shelter. The city already offer, deal with a000 people, offer, dealwith a000 people, now have to deal with over1 million people, feed them, treat them, and also offer them food and medicine and water. Most of the people here do not drink clean water. And finding a proper water, Drinking Water is a struggle. We have been touring around around and around and around. I had to travel about 20 km today to buy two or three boxes of water from a nearby village and bring it here. Its a crisis, but today there was some hope. People feel a little bit of hope, although nobody still receive any aid, even this hospital, not receiving anything but today we can see it, there is a little bit of hope, and hopefully this crisis will be eased because we are too far from saying that the crisis is solved. The Israeli Military says it is preparing to step up its strikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas militants there. Army spokesman rear admiral Daniel Hagari told reporters the increase is also intended to minimize the danger to Israeli Forces when they enter the next phase of the war. Translation it will minimise the risk to our forces in the next stage of the war and we are going to increase the attacks from today. We will increase the attacks and therefore i call on gaza City Residents to continue moving south for their safety. Yaniv voller is a Senior Lecturer in middle east politics at the university of kent. He gave me his assessment of israels military operation. So it seems as if a Ground Invasion is now imminent. The main purpose of escalating the air strikes in gaza is probably to prepare the ground for the israeli troops to enter gaza. Now, the question is, how is this invasion going to look like . There are different scenarios. There are different ways in which israel might into gaza, and there are also different scenarios with regard to how the region will respond. So the greatest threat at the moment, from an israeli perspective, is also is opening a war in different fronts, which might also involve the palestinians in the west bank and perhaps even worse, hezbollah in lebanon. Yeah, and thats certainly been warned about with a Huge Movement of israeli troops to the Israeli Border in northern lebanon, the evacuation of lots of israelis from that border as well. Weve had antony blinken, the us secretary of state, voicing his concerns over their tensions, over tensions there. Whats your assessment of whether that could happen and obviously also irans involvement there . Absolutely. There have been skirmishes in the last week. Between hezbollah and israel. Hezbollah has actually admitted to shooting rockets and missiles at Israeli Forces and border settlements. Now, the Israeli Government is not interested, to the best of my knowledge, in escalating the situation with hezbollah, because hezbollah represents an entirely different story than hamas. Hezbollah has ballistic missiles, it has direct iranian support, and it has Tens Of Thousands of fighters that not try to invade of fighters that might try to invade Israeli Border towns in the north. So opening another front is not in israels interest. 0n the other hand, theres so much that israel can do to avoid this escalation. And if hezbollah intensifies its attacks on israel, then there is a risk that without without any desire, this war, this conflict will escalate into a full scale war. And this is the worst Case Scenario that we can think of. What could it do now to try and dial down those tensions . Its committed to Eradicating Hamas. Its made that very clear. So the problem with the idea of Eradicating Hamas is that the Israeli Government has not yet presented a clear plan on how to achieve that. Hamas is a terrorist organisation. Its a violent organisation. That. And obviously the images that we saw two weeks ago really show the change in the nature of hamas s threat to israel. Israel can neutralise hamas s fighting capacities at least, at least in the short term. But the question is what will happen next . Who will replace hamas . Will it be israel . Will it be the Palestinian Authority . Will it be any local initiative that the International Community will support . We still dont know how this is going to look like. And this, the decision on the day after might also shape israels invasion into gaza. What will determine when it goes in, do you think . Weve had these groups amassing on the border for two weeks now . Theres Tens Of Thousands of Israeli Soldiers there. Whats going to determine the timing of going into gaza, do you think, for israel . I think that one of the main considerations at the moment is the situation of the hostages. Israels priority now is to release these hostages alive as much, as much as possible. 210 hostages being held by hamas. Absolutely. And they are being used by hamas as a human shields. So israels interest is to release all of these hostages. We saw yesterday the release of two hostages. Both of them are american citizens. And that was mainly a gesture to President Biden rather than any broader than the result of any israeli pressure. But i believe that the israelis are trying to gather as much intelligence as possible before invading. It also tries to gather as much intelligence as possible about the strategic positions of hamas, where the whereabouts of hamas leaders in the strip, those who havent left the strip yet, the whereabouts of strategic weapons. So its about gathering intelligence and, of course, guaranteeing the safety of the hostages. I want to ask you, youre israeli, you live here in the uk. You have done for a number of years. How has this impacted on you, this attack on your homeland . Two weeks ago, the biggest Loss Ofjewish life in a single day since the holocaust. Its been extremely difficult. And i do try to detach, of course, between my capacity as an expert on the region and as an israeli citizen. But it was a major shock. It really shattered everything that we believed about hamas s intentions as well. And its a great tragedy. Theres no family that has not been affected by the situation. There are great concerns for our loved ones. And even worse than that, i think many of us have witnessed the escalation of attacks not just on israel, but also on Thejewish Community in north london. And its a very terrifying situation. I want to bring you a statement from the family of the release of the hostages yesterday. This is a moment of extraordinary relief, unfortunately we dont have the privilege of celebrating their return or morning our lost loved ones, we are working to secure the eight other members of our family along with the estimated 192 other people still held hostage including numerous americans and many who are in need of medical treatment. We will work around the clock with other families of those held hostages until they are back home. We are grateful to President Biden in his administration and those Around The World who are involved in the effort to return our beloved judith and natalie. Facebook Parent Company meta has apologised for adding the word terrorist to the biographies of some instagram users who describe themselves as palestinian. Meta said it has fixed a problem that briefly caused inappropriate arabic translations in some of its products. It told the bbc we sincerely apologise that this happened. Bbc reporter Azadeh Moshiri has more. Were this the apology comes after one user flagged the issue on x, formerly known as twitter. Now he isnt palestinian himself, but he tested the issue out after hearing it had happened to one of his friends. This is his Instagram Bio withjust the arabic word alhamdulillah. Instagram translated it to thank god. Its also commonly translated to praise be to god. But when he added the word palestinian next to a flag. Viewers were given an english translation reading praise be to god. Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom. Metta has told the bbc it has fixed the issue that, in their words, briefly caused inappropriate arabic translations in some of its products. They also told the bbc that they sincerely apologise that this happened. Meta is also facing accusations that its been Shadow Banning Pro Palestinian content. Now shadow banning is when a platform reduces the visibility of a users account or their content on the platform. But that usually happens when a user has fallen foul of the community guidelines. Meta earlier this week did acknowledge that there was a bug affecting their stories feature. Those are those posts that only last 2a hours. And in a statement they said this bug affected accounts equally they also said that they fixed that bug as soon as possible, but this isnt the first time that they faced accusations of Shadow Banning Pro Palestinian content. In fact, last year, the Model Bella Hadid made similar claims about her own content that was pro palestinian. And even before that, in 2021, when meta was facing similar allegations, it asked for an independent review of its moderation of the conflict that year. And this is what that review found. But the review did not find that there was any intentional racial or political bias on mehtas part. Or political bias on metas part. Now, instagram has released a Transparency Tool that allows you to check if your Instagram Account has any restrictions placed upon it. And we have a whole how to about that on our website, so please do check it out. Lets go back to that news that sir Bobby Charlton arguably Manchester United and englands greatest ever footballer has died at the age of 86. For england, he will forever be associated with the world cup victory in 1966. By the time he retired in 1973, he had scored 2a5 goals in 751 games for Manchester United. Sir bobby was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. Andy mitten is a Sports Journalist and editor of united we stand, a Manchester United supporter s fa nzine. He explained what sir Bobby Charlton meant to the fans. Main stand at old trafford is named after him. His statue is outside the ground alongside two of a great players, george best and denis law. All three were european footballers of the era in the 1960s, and so Bobby Charlton wasntjust a great player with incredible statistics, appearances and goals, but he saw some of his closest friends die in the munich air disaster, and he survived and he helped lead Manchester United. The recovery, the rise back to being cup winners, League Winners and european champions, the first english team to be so in 1968. So ive been speaking to some of his former team mates this afternoon, people like brian kidd, and they were extolling his virtues as a footballer, one of the best players in the world, and lived an incredible life and a huge figure in the history of Manchester United. And thats why you see in the outpouring since news of his passing. Yeah. And when he retired in the early 70s, he continued being a batender for decades, didnt he, for Manchester United. Yeah, he did. I was too young to see him play, but my father, my uncles told me all about him and had interviewed him as a journalist and as a young man growing up in manchester. He had a Soccer School and every young aspiring footballer in manchester, which was every young child in manchester, Wanted Tojoin this Soccer School because they thought it would be a step towards greatness. And it did actually work out for david beckham, not for the rest of us. But he was always he always had a high profile and he became a Manchester United director. But his strongest legacy was always what hed done on a football field. And brian kidd said to me earlier, brian was one of his teammates. He wasnt very vocal. He didnt say a lot, but he led by example. Just by watching him, you saw that the levels of excellence, the demands that you needed to put on yourself to be a top footballer at Manchester United that did it for club and country was spectacular. So his appearance records, his gold records, both for united and for england, they stood firm a long time, the united 0nes, for four decades. So he lived an incredible life. And its obviously very sad today, but he reached a great age. And youve seen the tributes to him and theyre very worthy ones. Yeah. Thats a record that stood for a0 years, i think, eventually broken by wayne rooney. And it was actually kind of bittersweet about it, wasnt it . Because he was a hero to him. And of course, because Manchester United is so successful, so popular Around The World. His name was known Around The World. Absolutely. Long before the Premier League became global. You would find stories of waiters in in thailand and car wardens in brazil whod heard of Bobby Charlton. His name transcended english football because hed been such a big starfor england, because england had won the world cup in 1966, because he scored spectacular goals as well. People really looked up to him. His life story was incredible. He was a youth player at Manchester United, Born In Ashington in a Coal Mining Area just north of of newcastle upon tyne. And to stay at one club for so long and to be so effective and to win everything. Thats one reason why he was renowned throughout the world. And just two minutes before i came on air to speak to you, i had a message from a former director of schalke for the huge german club, and they talked about meeting him in 2011 and how that was the one thing they remembered from their trip to old trafford, and that was for a Champions League semifinal game. So he was such a huge figure long, long after hed been a player for Manchester United. Just a memorable footballer, a legend. I didnt really follow his career, im not a football fan but everyone knows his name. Sad news. And he will be one of those legends who will be missed. Patriotic and a clean living, amazing. It was a privilege for us to get a guy like Bobby Charlton at preston north end. He had an influence, bringing players in of a stature. He is an icon, a football legend, definitely. He will be sorely missed. One of the greatest players england has ever seen. For united, he did everything any player has dream to do. He has done it, surpassed to, the best player in england has seen. He brought us up. He has made us who we are. One of the best players that will ever grace this earth. I it is deeply saddening. I hope they do a tribute at north end. It will be touching. I hope they do. Sir Bobby Charlton. Storm babet has continued to batter many parts of the uk, bringing torrential rain, flooding and severe disruption. 0ur Midlands Correspondent Navtej Johal Reports from derbyshire, where three risk to life warnings have been issued. When the River Derwent went overboard. This is a walkway in derby city centre, more suitable for wading. The river burst its banks overnight, flooding the city and weaving locals stunned. The people of derby have never seen anything like this before. The river has reached record high level, and this building is currently underwater. It is devastating. We woke up to this this morning. A lot of upset members of staff. And here we are. We are closed. We dont know how long for, and it is really, really difficult to take. Three severe Flood Warnings have been in place for the River Derwent and derbyshire today, the only place in england where this has happened. The impact is being felt up the road as well. It isjust sad because we are a Community Football club, and we should have been playing today, we work all week, we worked hard, and we come here to play football. Storm babet has also continued causing problems elsewhere. In this South Yorkshire village, homes were evacuated. People also had to leave flooded properties in chesterfield last night, where the water continued to cause havoc. A village in nottinghamshire also felt the brunt of storm babet. Meanwhile in powys, the County Council warned people to be ready to leave their homes. The flooding has also caused serious issues on public transport. Kings cross station in london closed due to overcrowding, Railfirm Lner telling passengers not to travel, and several have experienced severe disruption. The good news is that the flood water is receding in many places, but this has been a type of Weather Event that will take more than just a clean up to get over. Navteonhal, bbc news. Hello. Some parts of the country have had between 100 and 200 millilitres of rain. The exact figures have still yet to be verified, but they have been exceptional. Now, the red warning has expired from eastern scotland, but the Amber Warning for heavy rain is still valid in the north of scotland. We have to wait a little while before this Weather Front completely clears away and i think by this stage, already, well be experiencing Better Weather conditions in the east of scotland. Actually, across many parts of the uk, its a case of generally clear weather, dry weather through the night. And its also going to turn quite chilly, perhaps murky, misty in a few places. The Early Morning temperatures on sunday will be two in aberdeen, about that in newcastle. But i think in most bigger towns and cities, closer to around five to perhaps nine celsius. Now, the troublesome low that has brought all of that mayhem is now moving away to the north. This is the weather map for sunday, and were actually in between Weather Systems so some decent weather, im very pleased to say, on the way. From morning onwards, a lot of bright, if not sunny, weather. Yes, there will be a few showers here and there, but nothing compared to what weve had in the last few days. So overall, a bright day, if not sunny day for most of us, and much, much better across scotland. Look at that, sunshine and 11 degrees there in aberdeen. But sunday into monday, the next area of low pressure approaches and this one Will Reach Southern Parts of the uk. And also, another Weather Front will reach northern ireland, too. So, through the early hours of monday, the next Weather Front approaches, whereas many parts of the country wake up to sunshine. And its going to be a very decent day across scotland in terms of the weather. Northern england also fairly bright. But across the south, the next spell of rain is approaching. And, in fact, that Weather Front will be sweeping northwards across monday night. And the outlook is looking very unsettled across the uk, with the risk of further heavy rain and also Gale Force Winds right across the country. So a very unsettled outlook on the way. Bye bye. Live from london. This is bbc news. Israels military says it is stepping up its airstrikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas ahead of a possible major ground offensive. The un says its negotiating for a second convoy of aid to be allowed into gaza on sunday. Twenty truckloads crossed from egypt earlier the first since israel imposed a total siege on the strip. One of englands greatest footballers, and Manchester United legend, sir Bobby Charlton, dies, at the age of 86. And storm babet continues to batter parts of the uk bringing high winds, severe flooding and risk to life warnings. Hello and welcome.
