Everything is slowing down. Low pressure to the north of the uk and that will be the focus for most of the rain on monday. Again, showers and longer spells of rain and snow over the hills of scotland. A little bit of rain flirting with the South East Cornwall of england but on the whole, it looks like its going to be dry and there should be quite a bit of sunshine but the area still quite chilly. This colder air we are going to be sitting with for the beginning of the week but thats going to change. You can see how the colours change, the winds pick up and things are going to get milder and things are going to get milder and thats because were starting to get more movement from the atlantic, where there is a big area of low pressure and that will push this band of rain ahead, pick up the winds and then another area of low pressure follows in behind to bring more wind and rain. So the weathers going to change from the colder, drier to something milder, wetter and windier. That will change could be wednesday or thursday. Some uncertainty about that transition but there is change in the way in the outlook. Goodbye. Hello, this is bbc news. We will be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines Jeremy Corbyn and borisjohnson hold their closing rallies of the election campaign, and a last plea to the electorate. Lets get brexit done, and take this incredible country forwards together. Ive come here with a message of hope, a message of hope for this country of what this manifesto, what our party, represents. The leaders of the liberal democrats and snp have also been making their final pitches, with just hours before the polls open. Also tonight tributes are paid to the naturalist and broadcaster david bellamy, who has died aged 86. A teenager is found guilty of the murder of 14 year old jaden moodie, killed in a drugs gang war. Aung san suu kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner, defends myanmar against accusations of genocide. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me is anand menon, director of uk in a changing europe, and the economic adviser at arbuthnot banking, ruth lea. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. The metro goes with a festive feel, saying its time for voters to look to the future, as the voting has just begun. The guardian sasteremy corbyn has urged voters to send a shock to the establishment. The paper says his words came at the end of a brusing campaign. The telegraph lead is in the same vein, suggesting that a new poll for the paper has the tory lead at five points. They say a Hung Parliament is now plausible. Yorkshire post give you a sense of what the regional papers are saying. The Yorkshire Post leads with the news that there are urgent calls for electoral reform. They say that the election has been full of misinformation. The daily mail urges its readers to go to the polls and vote boris. The mirror gives a number of reasons to vote labour. The sun says britain has a clear choice between borisjohnson and Jeremy Corbyn. And, last but not least, the express calls its readers to back boris. Only one story in town, isnt there . No surprise since the polls open in just a few hours time. Lets start with the metro, so here it is, merry christmas, or as ruth said earlier, merry crossmas. What is interesting about this piece is the fact they say it is the most important election in a generation. Do you agree with that assessment . election in a generation. Do you agree with that assessment . I do, for two reasons. Firstly, this election is important because it will determine the fate of brexit, secondly because the gulf between the major parties in terms of ideology is huge. Both big parties are offering a fundamentally different way of organising the state, the economy, and it is, you know, back to the ideological struggles of old, if you like. Its a very important choice in terms of what our country looks like in five yea rs what our country looks like in five years time. You are nodding vigorously, ruth. Indeed, ithink thatis vigorously, ruth. Indeed, ithink that is what i was suggesting an hour ago. You have brexit versus a second referendum and you have enormous differences between the economic and spending policies, which as i quoted earlier, the institute for fiscal studies, which is fairly impartial, said that rarely is so stark choice faced by the electorate. This is really something different. The labour partyspending something different. The labour pa rtyspending plans are something different. The labour partyspending plans are truly enormous. I think what is also interesting about this election is that there are two sets of allegiances. You usually have sort of party allegiances, but this time you have party allegiances, and of course allegiances to whether you are brexit or remained, and they are crossing each other, cross cutting each other, which has made this election so incredibly important and so election so incredibly important and so incredibly difficult to call. Absolutely, we will come onto that ina absolutely, we will come onto that in a moment. Lets turn to the sun. Save brexit. A call to their key voters and readers, i suppose, save brexit. A call to their key voters and readers, isuppose, an echo of the pictures of the lightbulbs, of the famous photo in 1992, i think it was, on the front page of the sun, showing neil kinnock with his head in a light bulb. This time we have the light on if you vote for borisjohnson, bulb. This time we have the light on if you vote for Boris Johnson, but if you vote for Boris Johnson, but if red jez gets in, the lights will go out for good. This is what you would expect from the sun, isnt it . And he is completely right, of course, i and he is completely right, of course, lam and he is completely right, of course, i am allowed to say these things since anand is here. I used to be working for mitsubishi bank, and they wondered what it was all about, if kinnock wins today, will the last person to leave britain turn off the lights . And whenjohn major won the election, very surprisingly the next day the sun said it was the son that won it. Sun that won it. We want a shiny lightjob, sun that won it. We want a shiny light job, and not sun that won it. We want a shiny lightjob, and not a gloomy one. Sun that won it. We want a shiny light job, and not a gloomy one. My ta keaway light job, and not a gloomy one. My takeaway from the front page of the sun is they are almost saying they overdid it with neil kinnock. They are saying neil kinnock would have been a picnic compared to theJeremy Corbyn regime, and yet in 1992 they we re corbyn regime, and yet in 1992 they were claiming everyone would leave the country. If they were saying as they did in 1992 it was the sun what w011 they did in 1992 it was the sun what won it, other papers as influential 110w won it, other papers as influential now as they were then . We will come back to that, because it is tied up with the debate. Yes, they are influential, whether or not journalism is trusted as much as it used to be, whether it faces whole new challenges with social media, they are Big Questions that have come out of this election. Rightly, the Yorkshire Post is saying we need to be thinking about that. And i wa nt to to be thinking about that. And i want to turn to the daily mirror, and much as you would have expected the front page of the sun to say what it does, you would expect mirror to say what it does. For them, vote labour. It highlights the nhs, tv licences, schools, poverty. They underscore the point we are making before, that the stakes are very, very high here. Both sides of this debate have grasped that and i saying this is a really big deal, this election. This is bigger than other elections you voted in or may not have voted in, this one really matters. The tone of the two is quite striking. Do you think the tone of the two is reflecting any fear of complacency among voters, that perhaps might not come out and vote . That perhaps might not come out and vote . I think as far as the conservatives are concerned, it is the times article which is relevant here, and the various other articles we saw in the telegraph, which is really relevant. I think what the mirror is doing is shoring up his vote. This is a sort of pointing to the fact that the spending promises, just listing some of the spending promises, apart from other things, are absolutely enormous. You are talking about an extra £55 billion of capital spending, an extra £80 billion of current spend, and this is basically what they are going to spend it on, and this is what they are going to do. Big, big, big spending. There is going to be big spending. There is going to be big spending from the conservatives, as well. They are loosening the purse strings, arent they . 55 billion capital spend for labour, 85 £8 billion for the tories. Just emphasises, we have said this time and time again, just emphasises a huge gulf in the vision of these two parties. The tories will spend more, there is no doubt about that. More than they have said they would . More than they have said they would . More than they have said they would . More than the labour party well. The labour party have pledged to spend more than the tories. One of the interesting things about the tory ma nifesto interesting things about the tory manifesto is it is quite thin. The ifs comment on the tory manifesto is if this was an annual budget you would say it was not full of stuff, but as a five Year Programme it is very narrow indeed. Labour would say about their manifesto, borrowing costs are very low now and investment will increase productivity and growth. So this spending will pay for itself. That is the key. If they can get the money to pay for it, which i doubt whether the Financial Markets would allow, because £55 million a year billion pounds a year is a big number. Looking at the times, interesting headline. Tories face last minute threat from brexit party. The study shows nigel farage may cost the johnson as party. The study shows nigel farage may cost thejohnson as many party. The study shows nigel farage may cost the johnson as many as party. The study shows nigel farage may cost thejohnson as many as 16 seats. That could well be the case, and when you are talking about whether parties are being complacent, this is where i think the tories are really concerned about being complacent, because they can see that even with the brexit party vote, squeezed as it is, nevertheless, if there is still the brexit those in some of these seats, they could deny the conservative party 16 seats that they might otherwise pick up. Of course, the interesting thing is it is notjust the Tory Brexit Party which is at play. On the leave side, you have the big play on the remains side where the lib dems are squeezing the vote very considerably. Yes, the brexit Party Standing in labour seats is not necessarily a bad thing for labour if those brexit party votes are votes that would have gone to the conservatives. Thats what we dont know. Whether those people who are thinking of voting brexit party, if they stood down, with a vote conservative . Are they lifelong labour voters, but voting the conservatives is a step too far . That is the big question, i think, in the so called where the traditional constituencies whose communities have traditionally voted labour, will this time be willing to lend the tories their vote for that reason. We wont know that until we see the results. Key marginals in the midlands and the north. South yorkshire is a particular battleground. It is the crosscutting allegiances i was talking about. Lot of people have said it is a rather Lacklustre Campaign that hasnt really cut through, or has people pretty weary and dreary. Do you think the conservatives, for example, were wrong to focus so much on brexit . Or was that the correct strategy . I will tell you tomorrow at ten p. M. Wejust strategy . I will tell you tomorrow at ten p. M. We just dont know. They have come into this with a very, very clear strategy, which is just to talk about brexit. Remember, they are going for a fourth successive win. It is not easy in their position to win an election, and what they have to do, in a sense,is and what they have to do, in a sense, is not talk about their record in government. Jeremy corbyn wa nts to record in government. Jeremy corbyn wants to talk about their record in government. I get the impression borisjohnson has government. I get the impression Boris Johnson has been government. I get the impression borisjohnson has been quite successful at almost pretending that was someone else. I am a new successful at almost pretending that was someone else. I am a new prime minister, i am going to do new things, and you can trust me to invest and to try and neutralise the labour criticism, which is nine yea rs of labour criticism, which is nine years of austerity, look at the state of the nhs. We always have to issue lots of Health Warnings around poles, dont we . But from the final ones that are coming out this evening, as it says here in the times, the final clutch of polls suggest that although mrjohnson was heading for a majority, the vote was tightening and a Hung Parliament was a possibility. Just expand a little more as to why you think it might be tightening. I was saying earlier that i think the labour party is succeeding in squeezing the lib dem vote. This is the remainer option, if you like. Do you pick labour or lib dem if you want to remain outcome . That lib dem if you want to remain outcome . That is lib dem if you want to remain outcome . That is what seems to be happening to the vote. And the telegraph showed that the labour vote was picking up quite nicely at the expense of the lib dems. I think thatis the expense of the lib dems. I think that is what is happening. In any case, i think it was a yougov pole, yesterday, the trouble is the days tend to merge one into the other poll. And it said even with a ten point lead, there was still a possibility of a Hung Parliament. s lets move the mail the weather might come into play. The weather might come into play. The winter election headline. The weather is pretty grim in some parts of the country and both parties are very worried about turnout, so this isa very worried about turnout, so this is a way to say, look, whatever the weather, go out and vote. The interesting thing will be what proportion votes by postal ballot in the first place to avoid this, postal ballots will be up because it isa postal ballots will be up because it is a december election and everyone is a december election and everyone is worried about the weather. Turnout is a real issue in this election because it will be dark and raining and cold, will people go out to vote or not . Both parties are desperate to get out their core vote because turnout could prove decisive. Do you think people will go and vote or do you think they might be put off . I actually dont think so. I suspect the key thing the tories are concerned about is that they get the old age pensioners down, like me weve got to put her down, like me weve got to put her down to the local polling station and vote. Im going to go, by the way, and vote. Good for you statistically dont older voters use more postal votes, so they may have already voted. They could have done. I saw somewhere that the postal vote was around 20 , which is extraordinary, if that is right. I dont know. This is the idea. The conservatives in particular, which tends to have the older electorate, is particularly keen to get people down to the polls. We will see. Lets talk about the Yorkshire Post, its put a comment, which is usually confined to the inside pages, but its put a comment on its front pages, pictures of borisjohnson and Jeremy Corbyn, and it is calling for urgent electoral but put this in some pride of context or me. Some kind stop it says truth has been the loser in this general election and it is powerfully worded, isnt it . Theres the phrase, spin, conjecture and downright deceit. They cite a number of advantages but the key one is the photo of the baby where the Yorkshire Post got embroiled in a row with people claiming to be nurses at the hospital saying the photo was staged and those posts disappeared. This is saying we need to decide what is and isnt fact. One of the outcomes of this election has to be that we set down and think about the threat posed to democracy of online news, social media, people being able to post things that isnt true without it being properly checked. The importance of good, solid, well researched journalism to be informed and you need to be informed to have a functioning democracy. Im not saying anything too controversial here but both leaders have been perhaps sometimes economical with the truth themselves. Far be it from me to comment on these things. All politicians are completely honest, lets be honest about this there has been a bit of economy with the truth but more to the point, going back to this comment about the young boy in leeds infirmary, so very much on Yorkshire Post home territory, this was on social media. How do you stop it . I dont know how you stop it. Did they make a suggestion for that . What theyre saying i think. It is getting quite late and i havent read it in detail, but what we need to think about is the threat to the quality of democratic life posed by the ability to post things that get shared all over and even if they get taken down, many think they are true. Theres been a number of select reports over the last couple of years talking about the threat of social media and digital post and theres been a number of recommendations coming out of those committees, none have been acted on and we cant ignore it for much longer. Sorry, ruth. Im going to quote it here, it says today this newspaper demands we call upon the Electoral Commission to carry out a full enquiry into the conduct and content full enquiry into the conduct and co nte nt of full enquiry into the conduct and content of this election campaign. The people of this country must never be asked to navigate a maelstrom of misinformation to decide who will govern them. Very strongly worded. A good argument, to be honest. Exactly. Im not trying to let us finish with the telegraph, not the main body of the front page, but the little cartoon by matt. Three wise opinion pollsters, ruth, or unsurprisingly going in Different Directions. They dont seem to be following the star, dont seem to be following the star, do they . Maybe more than one star they are following. We three kings of oriental following one star i love matt, hes terrific, but i dont think he has been fair to opinion pollsters because i think they have been reasonably consistent and they always make the point that when they come out with a result, they put probabilities around it. On they put probabilities around it. On the bbc site, we have the poll tracker, and being a statistician, i love these things, but you always put in the margin of error and to be fairthe put in the margin of error and to be fair the pollsters have done the best they can. They are professionals. I think this is unfair because while the pollsters are using different methodologies and using different samples, they are all heading in the same direction and the overall trends are very similar. That is to say all in the last few days showed the gap widening. We dont know who will call it exactly right, but to claim they are all heading in Different Directions a slightly unfair on the pollsters. There you are, hooray for the pollsters thank you so much. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget, you can see the front pages online at bbc. Co. Uk papers, and if you miss the programme, you can watch it on bbc iplayer. Thank you, anand menon and ruth lea. Goodbye. Good evening. Heres your latest sports news. Thats all the sport for now. Hello there. More wet and weather its on the way for the next 21 hours and weve already had two deep areas of low pressure affect the uk this week, this mass of cloud gathering near the atlantic is the next area of rain. The next low pressure, its attendant weather fronts, so we expect lengthier spells of rain today. Notjust rain either, weve had a cold night so as that rain comes into the colder air, we could have some hill snow but ahead of it the main concern is ice. Showers have continued to fall in the north, sleet and snow in the hills, hail and thunder, washing off the salt and giving slick surfaces and thats possible anywhere where we see a frost, and even in towns and cities we expect temperatures close to freezing, it has been so damp. By morning already temperatures are lifting a little in the south and west as the cloud thickens and the rain is with us in southern and western areas, wales, Northern Ireland for the rush hour and a smattering of wintryness over the hills even in the south and are likely a couple of centimetres over the hills in Northern England and southern scotland and then it clears two showers later as the rain reaches eastern parts of the uk. But all the time, temperatures will struggle and it will feel quite raw over that cloud cover and with that rain and hill snow around and we could stay in the chilly, showery brighter regime in the north of scotla nd brighter regime in the north of scotland by the end of the day and that changes through the coming night and into friday, this low pressure and its strong winds in the south push the rain out of the way here but pull it back in towards the low pressure in northern and eastern scotland. A wetter day on friday, cold and raw with snow on the hills. Back into the sunshine and showers for most but they will come through thick and fast on the brisk Northern Ireland, Northern England, and the midlands and again wintryness over the hills, hail, sleet and snow as well as some thunder. That low pressure stays with us through the weekend, throwing further batches of showers and longer spells of rain and even hill snow, not necessarily just in the north potentially still those strong winds in the north. Looking like we will keep temperatures around where they should be for this time of year but with the risk of showers or longer spells of rain through the weekend, and it will feel chilly, particularly when you add on the stronger winds, which will often be strongest in southern areas. There are warnings out there on the website. Bye bye. Im Samantha Simmonds in london. The headlines. Thursday is polling day in the uk. The election has been described by all parties as britains most important in decades. India passes a controversial new citizenship law, which critics say turns muslims into second class citizens.
